Official Copelandia/Panaeolus Thread * 70
    #22216410 - 09/10/15 11:08 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hey, mush cult

I cant help but feel as though the genus Copelandia hasn't been given much spotlight, due to the "difficulty" regarding its cultivation.

They're really not that much harder than cubensis sp despite the lack of appraisal.
So I thought I would do the genus some justice by creating a thread, strictly for and about Copelandia.
The ever so small, yet magically powerful psychoactive mushroom.

I will be posting all of my results, experience, and experimental approaches with the genus.

If you have any of the Copelandia sp in your collection, I encourage you to get them growing and post your results here! Fruits..mycelia..w/e!
It would mean a great deal to me, and more importantly.. the community!

So come on everyone, lets give these little blue mushrooms the acknowledgment, and appreciation they deserve!
________________________________________________________________

First up!!
Panaeolus cambodginiensis var. "Sandose"

Spore print -> agar -> Oats.

Spawned to:

    50% horse manure
    30% powdered straw
    20% CVG

In a 22"L 18"W 12"H tub. (don't know the gallon size)
(I've never used powdered straw before so yeah!!)

Cased with "Jiffy Mix" enriched with vermiculite, PH'd at a value of 8 using lime.

Got fluffy..

Then came the pins.
(If you look closely, you'll see a small green seedling) lol

Day later..

(cloned the big guy in tht cluster)

2 days later..
They have gotten huge over night, almost the size of small cubensis mushrooms. :whoah:

I love the color of the caps. && how bulky they've become. Didn't know they would be all buffed up on creatine
Also, what I find astounding is how they stay moist/hydrated although I haven't misted the casing layer in dayss.
They may be small compared to cubensis but they sure can retain moisture!!! If I treated my cubes as I would Panaeolus, my fruits would be dry and scarce..

Truly finicky, and unique at the same damn time.

3 days (harvest)..

Gawdd I love the smell of these mushrooms, they smell like sweet almonds, or sweet milk IMO
Definitely not musky like cubensis..

Soo to sum things upVVVV

Grain of choice: Oats

Sub:  50% Horse manure, 30% Straw, 20% CVG

Casing: "Jiffy mix"

Light: 39w 6500K CFL (13w each bulb x3)

Temp: 24-25°C

Air circulation: 20" oscillating fan

Humidity/RH: 70-75%  (got down to 50% one night, when I forgot to mist the walls)

Dry weight: 17g dry

Experience:
I still cant believe how far 1G of these guys will take you!
I was full-blown tripping for 7hrs straight!!

The colors and patterns were so different than I am accustomed to!

At one point everything around me was like the ocean!
Waving up, and down, up and down..
I mean wayyy uppp!!!
So I laid and stared at the clouds..which has a mind of its own.LOL
The clouds were morphing into so many shapes and colors, && i swear I saw 2 fire breathing phoenix come towards me.
Then I was trapped in a cyclone. The clouds were spinning around me but I was in the peaceful center.

Remember when I spoke or moved I could see "waves" or "vibration" coming off my body!!

Lol once we got home I looked at myself in the mirror and it was game over,
My dreads turned into snakes and were slithering on my head. I almost had a heart attack/panic attack!!

The trip was far more visual than Cubensis, I dont think Ill ever eat cubensis again unless its of the PE variety.
The body load is like no other!! Almost MDMA likee..

All in all I'd say this was a great run!

I still have a few fruits that I need to harvest, but I'll have the final dry weight posted soon!

4 pints jars of 1:1:1 verm ground WBS and hpoo compost

How come the myc is dark grey? Looks totally different than from what you got there. I also did spore agar to grain only one xfer out from contams.

Edit: this panaelous cyanscens Hawaiian.

I'd say those are no good (contaminated)...
They look overly wet.

Id personally start them on grains...
But if you dont have a a PC, I suggest following a PF tek that calls for manure.

antillarum?
If you can find Panaeolus antillarum, you should be able to find psychoactive Panaeolus sp aswell. They both grow on dung...

I've attempted Pan species multiple times. My first try was with pan cyan. I used manure brf cakes, everything looked good but they stalled at 50%, I left them on my dresser for 5 months and they stayed at 50% from like week 2-3. My next attempt was with Pan Cambo. I think the syringe might be bad now though. I bought it back in March, started some grain in april, but my GE hole was too big and they contamned, I have less than 1cc left of that syringe now, I tried putting it on agar in August, all the other plates I made up germinated and went to grain, the Pan Cambo didnt germinate :frown:

Awesome grow, can't wait to get started with pans!! With the spore print you used, did you place the dry spores on your agar in multiple spots on the plate or just in the middle. Also if i were to use an MS syringe, would I just squirt a drop or two in the center and turn the plate from side to side to distribute it? Thanks for the help man

awesome grow fox!!  and i like the thread idea too.

i think for me personally, what is hard is recognizing the mycelium on agar.  it is whispy.  i have had some weird luck recently with it, all issues with stalling out on grains after it gets a good start.  that never happened to me before.  once it got going, it finished really fast.

what is the "powdered straw" in ur recipe?  do u grind it up yourself really fine, or is it a product for something else?

My guess would be straw he cuts himself. Theres a guide somewhere on here whrre someone puts all of their straw in a tote and cuts a hole im the lid big enough for them to put their weedwacker through, then they close the lid turn the weedwacker on amd it cuts all the straw up finely

It was a spore print swabbed with a "Q-tip", which was sterilized at 15psi for 15mins.
I barley touched the print with the tip of the "Q-tip" followed by touching the Q-tip once in the center of the agar dish.
Once the Q-tip has touched the agar. I dispose of it..
Ive always heard of ppl placing multiple "colonies" on their dishes, or even swiping the q-tip across agar, but I personally see no benefit from doing so..

If your using spore solution in water suspension, I would flame a scalpel or w/e you use for mycologicial/microbiological work then use the tip of the flamed scalpel to place a small "divot" into the center of your dish, then place one drop of solution into the divot.
(the divot keeps your spore solution from "running" all over the dish.)
Spores need to meet up before they can germinate. They cant do so if your spores are scattered across the dish. Keep it contained..

I dont own a weed wacker, lol
basically just grab my wheat straw and run it through my blenders.
I can fit 6x more straw into the sub when compared to just cutting the straw pinkie length..
Also cuts down on colonization times.. the mycelia doesn't have to colonize the interior of the straw, since its already broken down to a fine powder.
Didn't need to soak the straw powder either, just mixed it in with the bulk dry, then brought to field capacity.

&&I know what you mean about the complexities when distinguishing panaeolus mycelia.
It can be really whispy at timess.
I try to keep my agar media nutrients on the low end, with no sugar so that I get thicker cultures which are easier to differentiate from contaminants.

You see no benefits in swiping agar? Because it will make it so there's multiple places germinating. It makes it so you don't have everything germinating (contams included) in 1 spot. In fact don't just swipe. I zigzag

Nice grow.

For extra info on an easy way to do pans see the link in my signature.

Also I just got around to innoculating some cinctulus today.  With a variation to my regular pan cake mix.  I'll update the process in this thread.

Im not saying people shouldn't swipe or zig-zag.

Im just simply answering the question that was asked..

I dont swipe, and dont care to fix whats not broken OME

I have cinctulus germinating aswell. :super:

Will you be using your "pan cake mix" for the cinctulus?

With your "pan-cakes" I assume you used an MS syringe to inoculate through the holes in the dish. What are your contam rates with doing this method, considering that you're using sterilized manure in the mix and an MS syringe that is never 100% sterile..
