Yeah talking about pans. And I thought 1/4" was the right depth shit iv been fucking up then. It might not have been the jiffy then I'm gonna lightly coat it at 1/8 +/- see what happens. I'm trying to do a tub that's sit and forget on pans since iv heard of people who have done mono tubs in pans instead of martha.

1/4 is the max really you want it as thin as you can, as for a sit and forget Martha, your gonna need to find really strong genetics and your gonna have to do some hand watering but even then your gonna get more fails than success. I haven’t seen anyone put up consistent full low tek pan grows. At best I’ve seen 1 or 2 decent low tek grows along with a ton of fails and not worth its. If there was a way to consistently grow them as easily and as low maintenance as cubes everyone would be doing it

:whathesaid:

I've gone about 1/4" and it's been ok. I like about 4-5mm these days.

As for low tech grows, same here. I've seen a few one off decent grows. But I guess
it depends on what you are after. Personally, when I first saw Blue Helix's grows for
the first time I was like "fuck yes!". So, that's what I'm after. And anything less
is disappointing to me.

See i met someone who used a regular mono tub for pans. And had a great flush I figured if all mushrooms need is proper far and stuff then why not find what makes it tick.

Btw does tamps grow like cubes or am I gonna need a martha? I'm trying to stay away from a grow tent. I don't want to pull the trigger on $200+ not after I just spent 5k on flowhood and PC's and alot other stuff. And if a tents what I need anyone have a simple tek on a martha tent that easy to set up and proven iv read somewhere on a "jartha"?

Yeah I mean it is possible But I guarantee you he didn’t set and forget it running a traditional mono requires lots of syringe watering, And again the percentage of successful tubs that end up looking like that is going to be pretty low. Everyone who puts up continual full trays/tubs uses some form of rehydration automation. Tamps can be done set and forget just make your sub 3inches and case (str8 coir works fine and 50/50 or sand for a case)

Quick question about watering with a syringe, are you just injecting water into the sub at evenly spaced areas? or targeting the drier looking patches?

You aren't injecting anything. Just using it to drop water on top of the casing...like an eye dropper

Ah ok! I'd seen people talk about water with a syringe a number of times and had pictured people injecting water into the sub. But it's more a case of dropping the water on.

Do you drop just on the drier patches or water evenly bewteen pins?

If you really want to do pans it’ll be worth the 50 bucks for a fogger and timer. That’s really the main difference between cubes and pans plus they’re good for tamps/atl too if you want to run those wetter.

Once you get things set up they’re almost zero maintenance same as cubes, I just kinda visually inspect the surface and maybe turn the dial on the fogger if the weather changes.

Yeah I've got a greenhouse dealy on the way. Just trying to settle on a fogger. I'm not going to be growing many so was thinking about having a pan section in the greenhouse. I figured I would be ok with a smaller fogger If I was only using a shelf or two for pans.

I'm asking questions to keep me distracted while I wait for my agar and grains to grow.

Hi guys,
I'm super excited to say I've got 3 pan varieties on the way to me.

Just finished making up my shopping list based on jcm's tek and have read the writeups by jakeoncid and asura.

I'm definitely gonna have a few questions as I've rarely had to adjust or even pay much attention to temps and other environmental conditions with cube growing, they just grow.

Anyway, exciting stuff, I can't wait to get into it.

Best thing I can say is don’t try to experiment on your first run. Use the teks to T. Get a couple grows under your belt then when you know the parameters through personal experience you can go outside the box and try new things. These aren’t like cubes so you’ll have to get a feel for what they want and agar work is key. Finding a good culture that will fruit can be difficult sometimes.

On the agar work, it seems one of the main traits that you should look for is speed, right? But as I've only done limited agar work with cubes I'm not sure how fast is fast? Any rough rules of thumb?

I streaked four plates today from a Pan Cyan Texas print.

You want fast and wispy. What you think is good strong growth usually with cubes and others is different with this species. On Jcms tek you can see what I mean. You don’t want the growth that’s too thick and fast. You want fast and wispy.

Type of growth is pretty important too. With cubes any clean myc will do fine but pans seem to have some types that won’t colonize or won’t fruit if you isolate them.

Can you remember how long that growth took to form after the transfer?

And do you let them grow out much more before putting the wedge to your spawn/whatever you grow it out on?

Jcm's write-up is pretty good for explaining the type of growth to look for, also goes into how too thick can contribute to overlay... whatever that is.

ya until, I get a feel for it I'll be sticking to the tek, sounds like there's enough to focus on without fiddling around.

I've got the process pretty clear, was wondering the best way of measuring the core temp of a jar when pasturising in jars using a 23qt presto? I'm a bit off that point yet but I might as well ask.

I don’t do wedge drop I do LC and I make it as quickly as possible after I find a good culture. Then all my sterile work is finished and I don’t have to worry about contam nearly as much. All my LC transfers and inoculation is all done without taking off the lid through the injection port and with new sterile needles. I go through a lot but it’s worth the security especially when doing my initial transfer. Biopsy style through the injection port. Never take off the lid of LC never have to.

Also I do a lot of bulk grain bags and bulk bags so LC is just the way to go for me. I’ll make 2-3 quart grain bags so I don’t have a bunch of jars to mess with.

Also with my bulk bags I started using wheat bran instead of grain and I love the results. Much faster healthy looking growth.
