nice! I gotta hit up this local poo source I always see on craigslist. I know people get it for a variety of reasons but i've still been hesitant to roll up and load up a bucket from 'em. I'm sure it doesn't matter.

I told them I grow portobello. They just wanted me to bring some fresh ones next time I come to pick up. As much as ya want for free. Some stables will pay people to come pick up there shit.

I’ve never used straw so far. All of mine have been composted manure though, not sure if that makes a difference.

straw = steroids for pans in my opinion. ive done without also and the results were night and day. i know once i went to using a horse manure straw mix il never not use the straw. it really makes that much a difference in my experiences

I agree. I even add a little verm to cut it down further.

Nordel said: Even though the ingredients seem right, the ph-level seems too high. I'm not super sure, but i think peat should have 4-5 since its quite acidic. That's why its bumped with lime etc.
Oh...just noticed that it already contains lime etc. So i guess its prebumped.
So (i would also like to know that!) when used, one doesnt need to add extra lime? Right?
Hi Nordel, thank you for your reply ... yes, it is already made to have a Ph of 6.9 - the turtles it is made for seem to like it that way and it was actually why it caught my eye.

Thank you Jake ! The turtle earth I posted is limed to 6.9 by the manufacturer. Will the 0.1 to make it 7 make a difference ? I have Calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate in powder at hand. Should I add a tiny bit to make it 7 to 7.5 ? Ho to make sure it gets distributed evenly through the casing earth ? Add it to the water that I use to bring it to 'field capacity' ? I guess once I have a few successful grown I can play around with all sorts of things. But for the first I want it to make as safe as possible to at least get a few prints to keep the genetics fresh.

Asura said: When I mix up the peat and verm, pH is usually right at 7. But I use that miracle grow shit which is probably tailored to be at that range.
Thank you Asura ! Do you leave it at 7 or do you add more lime to make it higher ?
_______________
Regarding poo, in my country it is easy to find hpoo on ebay in all forms. People who own horses are keen on selling it there. You can get fresh, dried, composted. _______________
I had some space in my last PC-run of normal rye grain jars so I did an experiment that looks promising so far. "Fonio-Paddy" as spawn. It is used as a special bird food in my Europe. The interesting thing is, that it has a grain size much smaller than every other common spawn - about as the same grain size as Amaranth. The thing with Amaranth is that it gets super slimy and is hard to prepare as spawn. Fonio (hulled Fonio for birds) I found to be easy to prepare. If it works, the small grain size could make a nice spawn. It holds water well while still being possible to behave nice, being shakable - at least for now, not sure what will happen when the mycelium has grown out fully in the jar. I do know however, that such experiments often go wrong, so I just do it out of curiosity on the side.
This is Estero on Fonio-grain (toothpick for size):

Haven't dried them yet. Took prints which finished today and the rest of the mushrooms is in the fridge. Didn't care to weight them wet or to run the dehydrator for only a flush from 1 tray. So I'm waiting for the next flush before drying them.
Have my highest temp ever in the GH 30C so they grow so famn fast!

I’m curious how consistent the stuff bluehelix said about cambo drying to 5% vs cyan 10% is.
It was true for the cambo Jamaica for sure but that’s the only cambo I have.
