Im having troubles finding the decayed brown stuff over here too. It translates to spaghnum but obviously y'all are using 'peat' which is pretty much impossible to find over here. What kind of other uses does it have? Ie what kind of shop sells it?
I have all but given up on ever finding any so Im thinking about coir/verm casing myself.

It’s a soil amendment used in gardening. I’d check nurseries or garden suppliers.

Or seed starter which is usually a blend of peat, coir and perlite. Just be sure it doesn’t contain fert.

Im kinda confused now, since sphagnum is mentioned on the package.
The language barrier was also one of tbe bigger problems while digging into this hobby...getting the lingo is a bit tiresome, sometimes really disorienting...and inches and elbows are a real pita when one uses the metric system.
So what is it now? Sphagnum? Peat? Sphagnum peat?
Or are there different varieties? Like in brick or dissolved form?

The peat is the decayed and decomposed moss and is dug/harvested out of old bogs where the moss grows. So both words could be in the label for the peat.
Sphagnum moss:

Sphagnum peat:

Oh man... *sigh
This is unfortunate.
But thank you for your swift reply, Mycolorado.
Since i applied it yesterday morning it may be not too good for the myc to scrape it off now. Maybe ill test out the peat as it is. I made a ph test before applying it and the stuff was at least acidic. ...so maybe it still will work out?

This explains it. The harvesting picture made me realize what it is. In NL it's actually called 'turf'. Whole counties were dug out for it in the past. Never realized that's what peat moss is.
And it's widely available and cheap too!
Thank you guys for explaining.

my first 2 PHV bags stalled out, which didn't super surprise me - had some mishaps that ended up with what in retrospect was pretty obviously an overly wet sub, and i wasn't super confident about the vigor of the culture in the jars but I spawned 'em anyway just to get a feel for the process. they looked fine at first and I thought things might be fine but they didn't recover well.
the next two were perfect from plate to spawn. great looking culture, sub was prepped right, pasteurized and sat for 5 days, and it was nice to actually see things happening that I'd read about in here, like the way it goes beast mode as soon as it hits the poo, and how quick it recovers after breakup.
anyway I'm going to be liberating those two bags to trays tomorrow - any reason to go get actual pyrex baking dish lids for these or is saran wrap/tin foil fine? is one or the other preferred even?

Jake, what would you think of this stuff here ? I used it out of the bag for cubes (well, out of bag and pasteurized) - which is probably not much of a reference because cubes don't need it.
I plan to use it for pans that I have going ... it is a substrate for turtle terrariums:
https://professional.floragard.de/en-gb/handel/suchergebnis/products-products-for-pets/543/floragard-turtle-substrate
From the data sheet:
Constituents and additives: - Slightly decomposed raised-bog peat (white peat) - Strongly decomposed raised-bog peat (black peat) - Bentonite of high sorption capacity - Lime (Calcium carbonate)
Chemical characteristics (at the moment of production): - pH-value 6.9 - Salt content < 0.2g / l - Nitrogen, phosphate and potassium all <50mg / l

Even though the ingredients seem right, the ph-level seems too high. I'm not super sure, but i think peat should have 4-5 since its quite acidic. That's why its bumped with lime etc.
Oh...just noticed that it already contains lime etc. So i guess its prebumped.
So (i would also like to know that!) when used, one doesnt need to add extra lime? Right?

I’d like to know if anyone has ever used horse manure pellets. I have 5 bags or damn things I ordered on mistake. If so what was your ratios compared to actual horse manure

When I mix up the peat and verm, pH is usually right at 7. But I use that miracle grow shit which is probably tailored to be at that range.

Ran out of hpoo a few days ago. Winter is coming fast so didnt know if I be able to find more field aged hpoo.
Went out today because I managed to borrow a car. There is a guy where I grew up who has horses. Asked hin last year and I'm free to pick as much as I want. When ever I want
This time I hit the mother load when I looked into the old barn where they take shelter from time to time and sleep.
No straw only horse poo that had been walked on so much that I wont have to do much more breaking it up.. so lucky Went and bought 110 Liters of straw so I be good for atleast 2 years.
