I'm adding about 8% by weight to the sub (including water weight).

Welp I just shot for the high end on wheat bran and did 20%. My wheat bran/sub cakes did really well and colonized close to the speed of grain. 12 days on the cakes and I barely used any I think it was about 7%.

I’ve been having pasteurization issues again, possibly due to not presoaking soaking the straw or maybe the manure I’m using. I’ve been doing a three hour pasteurization and a couple days later I can smell the manure starting to have a certain smell. It’s gotta be the endospores that hadn’t bloomed yet in the straw or manure and they bloom after the cook. It smells fine going in and coming out but 3-4 days later I smell it. Think I’m going to start making my bags and hydrating them and then letting them sit for 12 hours and then pasteurizing. That way it gives anything in there a chance to bloom and I can kill it all off in the cook.

Thats a good idea Celestialexplorer1! Ive been having issues pasteurizing too I might try presoaking next time.
How would you describe the smell? Mine was fishy last time.

It’s not even a rotten or manure smell just slightly potent. But I know where that’s going to lead so I chucked them. If there’s any sort of smell other than the standard fresh aged horse manure smell it’s never a good thing.

Maybe try cold pasteurizing the whole thing in lime? I've thought about doing it before, but haven't ever tried it. I'm pretty stuck on sterilization at this point.

I’ve thought about doing this also. I’ve done it for oysters but would lime pasteurization work for manure as well.

I don't really know, to be honest. Conceptually, it seems like you would end up with sub that favored myc, not trich or other contams. It's compelling enough to me that I might try it.

I’ve also wondered by doing this doesn’t it in turn make the sub like way more acidic and would that effect pan myc negatively in comparison to oyster myc.

Yeah, it might be a little much. I was reading this awhile back and it got me thinking about lime pasteurization or just adding lime to the substrate. Different species, but still I thought about it.

Ok, maybe ya'll are interested...maybe not.
I have almost completely rewritten, reorganized and more importantly condensed my write up. There's new information. It's more clear. And it's shorter!

Good to know! I was gonna read it again anyway bc I've been too overconcentrated on my cube grows lately and I really need to get back into pan mode. Going to my buddy's tmrw to try and create a suitablr fc out of all the electronic crap I fouraged and don't know how to hook up.
He's an appliance repair guy luckily.. I'm such a retard with that kind of stuff. I'll just open his beers for him and roll him joints untill he's got it worked out.

Hey Tweeq! Good to see ya. I think you'll find the information is much easier to digest and will give you a better explanation of what needs to happen.

Lol get used to it, growing pans requires constant tweaking It’s not as easy to just run the same exact routine across the whole year and get the same results as it is with cubes I am constantly re-dialing my tenants dealing with the different qualities of manure and straw, adjust case depending on PM PH, constantly cleaning and replacing parts lol I’ve made this comparison before but I really think it’s true growing cubes is kind of like worm and bobber fishing where as growing pans is more like flyfishing

Thanks Asura! Will do. You have been a great help already. When the fc is done I'll be out of excuses.
Last year was a little too early for me to try at pans. Been improving a lot on my cube grows and feel more confident. Also all the other guys on here have had such good results.. I can't be staying behind forever.
