That’s why I started doing multi culture LC for my first run with a new strain. Much much better when your clone hunting to do multi.

What do you think was the cause of the aborts your grows usually have very little less than most.

I just made up an Estero LC last night and pan Vietnam, blue springs and huasteca spawn is almost ready. Still more pins popping up on the sandose tray almost covering the entire surface but not growing. Maybe it’s just building the army before it sends it out into the world. Probably wishful thinking. Somethings wrong. It was a biopsy LC so it could be a bad culture

I'm getting conflicting info on pasteurizing casing layers if you're working with the cactus mix or jiffy you sprinkle right out of the bag or you pasteurize first?  The Mack Daddy RR said he never pasteurizes his casings, then in another post he says to pasteurize.  I'm thinking it's tougher to measure 1/8th inch at field capacity.

The best thing to do is follow the methods of people who are pulling down nice grows.
I love RR and still use many of his methods, 10 years into my growing, but if he's posted
an awesome pan grow, I've missed it.

if u ask me sub is one thing and lots  of ppl will sterilize sub bags and hey thats cool. personally  i spawn to a pasteurized sub and thats cool too. but no matter your method the one thing pretty much everyone will agree on and use is a pasteurized casing of peat moss and vermiculite with maybe a lil calcium carbonate for ph balance of 7-8. that is damn near universally the most used casing for pans and the best one if u ask me. also i try to stay away from coir in a casing too

Peoples on here use cactus mix same stuff but they say they use it straight out of the bag I'm assuming unpasteurized casing.  I love RR too but he said himself he only touches wood lovers.

I'm down for a pasteurized sub but 1/8th layer of casing worth all that pasteurizing?

It only takes a microscopic speck of mold or trich spore to germinate and fuck two months worth of work up.

Idk about cactus soil but jiffy mix out of the bag hasn’t caused any problems for me that I know of.

You could always put some in a bag and throw it in the bucket while you hydrate coir. Or I like to put a jar of manure and a jar of casing in the instant pot and just pasteurize both at the same time.

I always use cactus soil. Never straight out the bag, bad idea. It is already ph'd most of the time but still, it's got a lot of peat in it which needs some treatment.

For awhile I did like macmerdin and just dumped boiling water over the cactus mix and wait till it cooled. Would work fine but I went back to pasteurizing just to keep more microbes. I even cu my mix with perlite to make it more gritty, even hold water better in my opinion. My casings never look dry and I don't mist or keep my humidifiers on all day.

confirmed the casing will be pasteurized the real question is how you get field capacity mud to a 1/8th thickness.

yes 1/8 inch of properly pasteurized casing is worth it 100%  if ur trying to cut corners with pans you will without a doubt have issues i can promise you that. the conditions that pans love are also the exact same conditions that contams thrive in and its simply not worth doing if your not gnna do it right cuz the casing if you ask me is is prolly the most important part of the substrate. you dont want overlay or over colonization and you dont want contams and the best way to ensure that is proper prep of the proper materials and a ph of 7-8. i usually shoot for 7.5 hell this casing here was on the 6th flush and had been in the fc for 36 days all together and it was still in great shape when i pulled it.

your casing should def not b mud like i use 50/50 peat moss and coarse grade verm. its nice and airy and easy to spread nice and thin.

It definitely goes on different when it’s at field cap. It’s much easier to sprinkle it on even and thin when it’s dry.

The pans don’t care though just sprinkle it on and try to spread it out a little bit and you’re good. You don’t need to totally cover it I can always see the myc through my casing in spots.

This was my last one right after casing it.
