Just try and bust it up with a few hard shakes and roll your jars to
distribute it really well. If you aren't seeing new growth in a day or
so, it might be best to start over.

Well, jcm, I bought a fish scale on Amazon today  Does it get more exciting?

Kinda stoked because it will help me weigh out my substrate a lot faster...and it
will be easier to make larger batches in one go.

I have that same fish scale, and it works great for substrates.  I just use a 5-gallon bucket with it, and it's perfect to weigh the components of my substrate recipe (which is, of course, based on weight not volume).  I'm amazed how cheap scales are anymore.  I don't know why everyone doesn't have a couple, in fact!

Here are the two super cheap scales I recommend:

Very accurate fish scale for heavy stuff (up to 110 lbs) (get yourself a 5-gallon bucket with handle)

Great little scale up to a pound with an amazing 0.01g (10mg) accuracy and resolution

I always calibrate and test my scales, and both of these are amazing accurate even without calibration.  The pound scale was dead on for my 5, 50, 100, and 500g calibration weights.  It's pretty crazy to plop down a 500g calibration weight and have a scale in that price range correctly weight it at 500g without any adjustments!

jcm: how do you avoid crazy condensation on the underside of your FC lid? I'm testing mine and after a few hours it starts collecting and dripping everywhere, including where the trays would sit.

Room is at 75 °F. Obv if I let the room get to FC temp the condensation would stop, but I don't really want it to be tropical in there. And you clearly don't do this either, or you wouldn't need the aquarium heater in the bottom.

Not JCM but I had good luck with his FC style. I got a lot of water on the lid. I don't think it was condensation but rather like mist from all the splash from the airstones. I suspect that water collecting on the lid and then dropping may have been why I got so much sporulation. Read somewhere that a wet cap can be a trigger for the shroom to drop spores.

In my case it didn't seem to cause any problems, the grow was strong. I  did get contamination but it started on the bottom of the sub, I suspect there were some trich spores on the tray I used despite wiping it down with iso.

I did check on things most days and would take the lid off and fling off the water and wipe it down.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy, the plates I streaked with pan cyan texas are starting to germinate. Very excited. I'm new both to agar work and pans so am very interested in any pointers on these early stages. My camera has shit macro and there's not much to photograph just now, but I'll try and get some shots when things are right.

Cover, a little warmth goes a long way.. and pan agar grows FAST.. i keep my tubs with agar plates in them on top of my grow tents.. with a towel over them to keep heat in..(they only get to about 78-80) same with jars after agar.. a little warmth really helps them go fast.

ok guys heres what your lids should look like. this is not condensation. its humidity in the air as it rises up and out the holes. as new air comes in up thru the warm water it rises upward and out. there should be no splashing at all. there should b no misting caused by the bubbles bursting when they hit the surface. thats why the rack lifts the bottom of th tray about 3 inches above the water. so the casing surface is about 5 inches above the surface of the water. but the moisture that beads up on the lid will not drip onto the casing. i have 2 that are built the same exact way and they both work exactly the same. but like i said the humidity is so high in there that anything in there will have tiny beads of moisture on it. and if you are getting splashing from the bubbles popping you can simply move the stones closer twds the middle and away from the walls a bit so that any bursting bubbles splash onto the bottom of the tray. all the 4 stones in the middle are directly under the tray so if there is any splash it hits the bottom of the tray.

now when i go to open my fcs just be direct and lift upward and keep it flat dont tilt so the beads run down and drip just lift it directly up and off. i will however give it a wipe with a paper towel b4 putting back on. but these pics is what my lids look like when on they shouldnt be looking like anything more than this. but if i dont have a tray in there it will bead and drip. the tray prevents that and blocks all the excess moisture from rising up

Just seeking a second opinion.

Someone has told me to leave this plate alone for a day or two before transferring myc to a clean plate.

Does that sound about right?

Seconded, would love to hear the reason for taking points early vs leaving them to grow out.

I usually do 8 plates.. let them grow out a bit, then use like the 2 best of that to do 8 more plates.. then find the best of those to jars.
