Right, but you can just colonize in a jar, "birth" and then crumble/process the cake to use it in a tub/shoebox, which is what I was planning on doing. Guess I got a little confused on when to use manure when growing cyans, cause everywhere I looked I read that manure is an absolute necessity when working with them.
I found out it's necessary only when fruiting a couple of days ago, when the jars were already colonizing for about 10 days

IMO straw is not needed and just makes it easier to contaminate... All my pans been with horse compost or cow compost as sub (adding verm and/or coir only if I need to fluff it up if the sub is too muddy)

Just cased one of the outdoor trays with my peat/verm mix. I also filled 2 qt jars with straw and 1 tsp calcium carbonate each. Let them soak half an hr. then microwaved them for 2 mins. I'm going to use that to case the other one.

Straw is necessary IMO or at least its necessary to cut the h manure with something and straw is like 35mm film and pan myc is a match. If your contamination because of the straw try presoak it with lime. You can actually pasteurize straw with lime and cold water at a Ph of 13-14

IME my P. bisporus has been slower then other peoples P. cyans and more picky to getting wet. With that said I never grown any P. cyans.

For me definitely. 9 days at least or so. Makes sense based on their niche. Other Pans are shit-lovers. Manure doesn't last very long so they have to colonize and fruit QUICKLY! Compare that to the mostly grass-dwelling Bisporus, growing in soils way less rich in nutrition. They can take their sweet time.

Also I made some quart jars with straw pellets, straw some jiffy with a couple drops of growers honey(low n/p/k) and it did work but took forever to colonize so yes it can be done but the pans like manure a lot more. What’s your reason behind not wanting it hard to find?

Huh guess I need to read up before I run them, sounds like my normal manure compost and verm sub might not be the best for them.

Celest, mainly hard to find. i was going to try that blackkow stuff you can buy in bags but was told it's not good...
I may try fucking around with different subs and see what happens since i'm not in a rush, i have enough cubes to last quite awhile still.

I would say the absolute opposite of that using straight manure is often times far too dense. Straw helps keep it light and fluffy pans get deprived of oxygen very quickly so this is even more important with them especially if you want to maximize your yield

All this kinda makes me want to try black kow.
It sounds like the composted steer manure I’ve been using but mines not muddy or smelly. Except when I let a pasteurized jar of it sit for a week that smelled horrible.
Last time I was at Walmart I saw a bunch of mini hay bales by the pet section and got super excited, but then as I was walking around I read the packaging and it was ornamental and coated in some type of toxic shit. Idk why they decided to put it next to pet food seems kinda fucked up.

This is literally an “as I walk by it” emotionally detached experiment. I took some subs that were either questionable or slightly contamed and took the good looking pieces and put them in a shoebox outside just because why the hell not I invested a mountain of time into making the things why not give them a last flying chance what could it possibly hurt. So I literally took my bare hands nd threw them in the box and let them just marinate in the open summer air. Yesturday I took some dry peat from the bag and sprinkled it on them took the hose and fan sprayed it till wet. Today I noticed some pins and the myc looks pretty good. Just thought I’d share is all.
