Is it out of the norm for bulk bags to be all puffy and look good on top but be super thin and wispy and hard to see on the sides and bottom

il often mix my bags at around that point to speed up the process but i know some ppl dont like to do that out of fear of no recovery. but il only do it with bags i am certain will recover based on how well the myc behaved when shaken when it was on grain.
im not saying to mix or them or to not mix them. just saying what i do is all

I have mixed feelings about it, jcm4620. I've had it turn out great, and I've had it not work. It reminds me of scratching the casing where sometimes it works out great and promotes a more even pin set, and other times it results in total failure and mold. I think in the case of mixing the bags it really depends on the vigor of the mycelium. For example, if you did that to panellus stipticus, it would instantly die in the bag because it is a notoriously weak species (hence you don't find anyone using spawn fruiting it and even the gold standard of cultivation using liquid cultures is difficult). If you do it to the panellus cambogenesis or cubensis, one the other hand, it seems to promote full colonization of the bag. And there are a lot of in-betweens of those two extremes too. I can't say for sure what I think because I would need to know what kind of mycelium and the vigor of it to answer that.

it totally depends on the myc thats why i use the grain as a means of seeing how it recovers after a shake. if i have weak recovery after a shake on grain il often just toss it and not even risk it not recovering after its spawned and then broken up again to trays . id rather just go back and get a stronger culture. but then il have times where it dont recover great but then again its not awful either those are the bags i wont mix. but when they are full blown beast mode like my jambos are i mix those every single time. so yes it totally depends on the myc😃👍

I'm in a middle of strange growing period. I get trich at final moment of tray colonization third time in a row. First little white signs of trich appears at the top surface on 5-6 day after bulking \ 1 day before casing each time and there are mostly everything succesfully colonized each time. All sources - petri dishes, LC's, jars they are all clean. I never get problems on bulk stage before.
I have no idea. The last one that I have - low spawn ratio which I'm don't use before. 1qt jar of grain for 25qt pasturized manure\verm. It's low ratio but enough to mostly colonize all six trays in 6 days.
My assumption - trich had time to seize little part of substrate before mycelium because of low spawn ratio. If ratio was bigger full colonization took 3-4 days and trich simply didn't have time to say a word. Or maybe if substrate was sterilized not pasturized that might help in that particular case.
I would not wonder if this happened once. But this is the third time in a row in a month. What do you think guys?
it's 99% colonized. just tiny transperent mycelium between more intense white not visible in the photo of this quality

What’s the highest temp your sub got to when you were pasteurizing? It can keep rising for a little while after you turn the heat off.
I don’t think sterilizing poo works very well unless you’re colonizing it in sterile conditions

My sterile manure grows I spawned in the SAB and wrapped in cling until totally colonized, and still never got more than one flush.

How do you mix bulk and keep it sterile? I feel like your hands even if they’re “clean” are still a vector.
I know asura does that thing where you inoculate a bag of sterile poo/grain together and stick it in a tray once fully colonized

Gloves soaked in iso.
Really a good pan culture is so fast the SAB is probably overkill.

That’s one reason why JCMs idea of spawn to the bags then spawn to the tray is good as well. When I was having problems with contams that helped. Also started putting my sub in mycobags, wrapping it up really good packing tape to hold the bag tight, wrap it in foil with a metal rope thermometer with temp alarm, and bake at 170. It will hold in the 160s for at least two hours. The alarm goes off if it gets to 168

Did my transfers and rushed out of the house. Hoping some colonization happens and not too rapidly. Room temp in my mycology room is about 67-68. So, hopefully that's enough to get what I'm after. I'm just glad I got the okay from you guys that the plate looked good. Now if I fuck up, I know I can at least recreate that part of the process

ya it kinda sux having the xtra step but spawning directly to the trays is a good way to get blobby overlay. or at least in my experience it seemed that way. i think the breaking of it up and the mixing it in the bags and then laying to they trays does something that makes the mycelium not as prone to overlay in meg its a good way to make sure the entire sub is actually colonized before casing. cuz if the middle of the bag isnt it sure as shit will be after mixing and laying. kinda like how shaking a grain jar helps it move along
