well they will still pin on the sides sometimes usually from a shrinking sub but mostly its cuz they need a casing to fruit so unless ur casing the sides you wont get many
usually when i get them its along the sides just below or at the casing layer and then also cuz the sub has shrunk a tad and pulled away causing the microclimate same as cubes.

I got quite a few side pins on my last grow but it was from using a flexible container.

what ratio of straw to totally dry manure by weight are you using asura?
Also i know you dont usually do spawn, but what spawn rate would you recommend?
Is that enough water to actually hydrate bone dry manure and straw? Or do you end up with dry peices?

I can't remember what the ratio's are exactly. I was shooting for 70/30 straw poo to start but then I converted everything to weight. And fudged #'s up and down
This is what I've been running currently (from my notes)
1 "myco" quart rye spawn to 3.5 quarts of sterilized sub
Substrate per bag:
straw - ~2 quarts (60g) hpoo - ~1 quart (300g) verm - ~1/2 quart (60g) water ~1 quart (700g) = ~62.5%
Spawn ratio is pretty close to 1:4 but honestly, I hate it. It's way more grain than I like and I'm cutting it back to 1:5 maybe even 1:6.
My normal sub uses 250g of milo for 7 quarts of sub and performs very well. Not much grain for that volume.

lol wow now to me that seems like nothing lol? i use a ratio of 1qt rye spawn to 2 qts sub. i have used less grain before and had poor results but i actually think it was due to genetics cuz i see you and jake use such a low amount compared to me. and i have actually thought about cutting the amount of spawn by half for my next grow just to see how it goes

I have that exact same humidity/thermometer but it seemed to be fried after a week in 100% rh.
Asura do you notice a difference using less spawn?
It seems like either they don’t need much or they get it from the sub. I’ve been wondering about that especially since my second grow did great and it was like a few spoonfuls of spawn to probably a quart or quart and a half of manure and verm.

I've always used very little grain. I've been playing around with higher ratios and ending up with a bunch of stuff that doesn't want to fruit. It just wants to munch on grain.
jcm, not sure how you get away with those ratios, but next time you try the Aussies cut it back and see what happens.

Ok cool I’m definitely gonna stretch my spawn then.
Also one of your Golden halo prints made its way to me a few days ago. I was so stoked to see gold spores after seeing so many people get normal ones.
The whole streak plate is fuzzed up and it’s not even 48 hours yet.

Speaking of prints...
I've been raiding the gene pool from old grows and came across a nice, massive Aussie print.
Streaked 6 plates. Gotta try and bring this stuff back.

well thats awesome!! then i have 5 different cultures ready to spawn, no g2g needed
imma try that ratio
so are you hydrating your straw or anything?
or just chopping up the dry straw, crumbling the dry manure into powder, adding that exact amount of water to it, mixing it up, pasteurizing in bags/jars, then loading into bags?
im worried that there will be pockets of totally dry straw and manure.. obviously the exact opposite of my problem this time lol
I really appreciate yall helping me sort this out, i am bummed about messing up my first batch and want to get it right this time around

c10, I'm sterilizing in bags and spawning in front of the hood. Jake does pasteurization but I don't know his process exactly. But yeah, water straight to dry ingredients and just relying on the math.
Great video on moisture content. I do this stuff (but a lot less rant-y )

Lmao that guy... but yeah makes sense, ive always just gone by feel and ratios that work well, but i reckon it makes sense to go measure water content, since like he said, substrates feel different with the same amount
Ive worked w straw and manure a lot, never have any issues w cubes or edibles, but looks like i def prepped this a little wet since it has about 5ml of water pooling at the bottom. Still think it woulda worked fine w cubes tho :/
Hmm i think im gonna try your sterilization method. My main concern has been the bone dry manure chunks and thoroughly hydrating the straw, but in a pc i reckon the steam and pressure would easily handle those (evenly distribute the moisture), with the right moisture content
When you sterilize your sub in bags do you leave them unsealed and just fold/tape em down or do you preseal then cut and reseal after inoc?
Thanks a bunch for helping me debug! I am determined to not mess this up again
@Jcm, do you know what exact weights of straw, poo, and water are?
Last time i just did 2l hpoo (bone dry) , 2.4l straw, and water till it felt right for a cube sub ("field cap")

I've done bags every which way and now I am back to the 'ol Tyvek sleeve Somtimes a piece of foil folded in half. The foil can be nice because you can accordion fold and it holds it's shape. Will come out perfectly sealed.
My runs are 4 hours at 17-18 psi. I usually have 3 rows of lids on the bottom and a rack on top of that, then fill with water up to the rack.
After a run that long, you'll see when you break up the bag the sub will be perfect and fluffy. Water is perfect throughout.
