A quick reference guide type thing would be great.
I’m brand new just at the point of colonizing grain spawn and I’ve had a ton of questions.
What would be super useful is pictures of all the different types of myc, which ones are good and which ones you don’t want. In the agar stage that’s the hardest part for me so far, especially coming from cubes where any clean myc is good.
My next concern is just what to get from local chain stores for substrate.
And finally maybe low tech simpler options to fruit, if there is such a way that’s reliable enough. Building a Martha or tote rig with a fogger isn’t a big deal but I’ve seen people do stuff with bags on a jar and trays in perlite too while browsing pan related stuff.
I’ll be back in the morning with more questions about pictures of transfers and grain spawn, and my pseudo plate pin. My first jar from weeks ago is garbage so I dropped a new wedge a few days back and it had grown quite a bit all of a sudden today, so hopefully it’ll be decent progress by tomorrow.

Update on my pan jam effort. I’m trying to skimp a bit on my fruiting chamber - trying for lower tek and cost. I have two trays floating on a water bath in a 116 quart sterelite. There is an aquarium heater for warmth and a seed sprouting mat heater under the whole thing. I think the bath is right around 80-84 but the air in there is 77-80. The humidity is 90-95. I was most worried about the humidity and I think it will be high enough. I’m trying to think of a way to periodically drop it to 85. I thought about using a small fan on a timer to push dry air in there. My ambient RH is about 25-30.
I cased Friday night and I can see the myc moving up into the casing. I’m going to be gone for a couple of days so I hope the system is pretty stable.
I’d be happy with 10-20 fruits soooo... here’s hoping I have pictures in 7-10 days.

Thank you all for all the education and innovation you share in here. MrFox and I used to chat a fair bit and I bailed him out a time or two with prints and various supplies when he had scares and dumped every thing and another time when his place flooded. I don’t know what’s become of him but I’m thankful he started this thread for the community.
Jake you reinvigorated it after it languished for a long spell so hats off to you too buddy!

and here are the ones i got from asura

Hope I don't get midgets, this look like a pita.. the ones from asura look nice though, I want thick stems like that. Last tray was thicker than the first ones I grew.
New write up looks great asura, added the link to all my pan journals. Waiting for my bags to colonize, how long do yours take? Mine are the same size by weight that your op recommends. This is my only pan pitri pic. It's grain water agar and the bvi culture I'm spawning this week. I let it grow out a few more days before using it. The whole pitri looked like the middle before I used it.
Here's some pan jam and RDU jars compared to cubes from January.

Ok so, here’s my collection of pan myc types. The transfer at the top right is leftover from what I dropped to grain.
And the one plate on the left has what started as a knot and has just kept growing, i was hoping it would pin but I’m about to move it to its own plate.

Do you think it likes grain any drier or wetter than cubes?

Thanks for the write up Asura. I was trying to read this entire thread, but I was doing it in my down time at work and we’re back to being busy again so I can’t spend 3 hours a day reading through the forums on my phone anymore. Haven’t even had 5 minutes of down time these last couple weeks. Took me months to make it to page 400 something and I’ve since given up.
So i was planning on doing a low tek SGFC grow for my first try at pans but it was really discouraging thinking about going into this knowing the results will never get to where I want them to be, and the only remedy was obtaining more space because my current apartment is too small for anything more than SGFC or unmodded tub.
Luckily my lady was supportive and she spent the last couple weeks looking for a new place and we found a good one on Sunday and I will have half of a room to work with now so I can setup a mjartha and start getting that dialed in rather than wasting my time looking for genetics that perform optimally in a SGFC.
Gonna be a couple more weeks until I get settled into the new place and another week or two to get everything setup but I hope to become a member of the club before summer gets here. Been a long process getting this thing off the ground, but even though progress has been slow it’s always been heading in the right direction. Almost to the exciting stuff

just a fair warning and this comes from doing it. sgfc for pans creates way more work and if you cant b there to hand water and keep an eye on it around the clock i would seek out another method. it was the first thing i tried and it was a pain in the ass to provide the perfect environmental conditions and it just ended up killing all my fruits shortly after pinning. monotub wasnt much better either

Yep. I gathered all that; more times than I can count in the 400+ pages I’ve read here. Hence the move. Would’ve come to this conclusion sooner but the lady didn’t want to leave the neighborhood were in cause it’s one of the nicer hoods here in the downtown area, but that means shits expensive AF if you want space.
Personally I was ready to move out toward the suburbs so we could pay the same amount in rent we’re currently paying for our 1 bedroom apt for a nice 3 bedroom house with a garage and basement that I could’ve turned into my hobby room. The mrs wasn’t havin any of that talk though
We got lucky and our current landlord had something open up across the street and with all the extra space at the new place I’ll be able to get rid of my storage unit and since I won’t be paying for that anymore I’ll essentially only be paying an extra $50 a month for the new place.

It's not looking like it. I'm gonna see if I can get some swabs. I don't think they're sporeless, but that whole tray is almost done and I don't see any black anywhere.
