I like how this new 7qt slow cooker is working out. Set it last night for 160 and went to bed. Loaded up another round this morning and bagged up yesterday's load to use in a couple days.

did you add the probe or did it come with one?? I feel like I have stayed away from casings and subs that require pasteurization cause it seemed daunting (as did everything else at one point i guess) but this looks really user friendly

Grim. Did you put the substrate or casing on a bag or just put it straight in there?
If so.. I guess you hand squeeze to get field capacity after?

It came with the probe. The whole thing was about $60 at Walmart.
If I had a bag that fit in there well I'd use one so I don't have to bag it up after. Also, the bottom and edges dried a little so I'd probably go over field capacity a bit before loading next time.

I remember reading somewhere yesterday a post from RR where he said, that you should not go over 1 hour, max 2. Is that obsolete knowledge?

Ah I see. So there is a pot thing inside there and then water underneath it, right? I thought you put the substrate in with extra water or whatever like a grain soak.
Did I understand this correctly Grim? Been thinking about getting similar for a long time.

Based on Jake's results it doesn't seem to be valid

Oh damn. Now we are talking! I would think it might burn or evaporate a lot if it's set up like that. But I'm a fool. That setup sounds great!
How long you think you could just leave say a casing mix in there before using it? I reckon at least a few days, right?
Now I really want one. Can you set it so that there is a timer to shut of after say 1 hour?
Sorry about all the questions. Just it looks so nice 😁

I had some drying on the edges but not burnt it's temp controlled.
I leave subs in jars for weeks so I don't see why in the cooker would be much different and jake suggests 5-7 days before using to let the microbes recover.
Theres no shut off timer but if you wanted to do that plug in timers are only a couple bucks.

When prints are fresh about 3 days. Over a week and I would be nervous.
