Related to the hypothetical lower maintenance pan grow setups, is there any chance that a particular variety of pans would be more inclined to succeed than others, or are they basically all the same in regards to sensitivity of conditions at the fruiting stage? My attempt was with the Australia variety.

I've thought about this. Like if I do a low tek grow and get a few fruits and then clone those, could I get genetics that would perform well in those sub-optimal conditions?
I'm not sure tbh, but I have thought about it. I've found the aussie's to be the easiest to grow, but that could have been the genetics I started with.

The genetics are only half of it sometimes ms gives me canopies but it’s hard to get a full pinset without really cranking your evaporation

I was just thinking about that. I swear, cubes way back didn't yield nearly as well and as easily as cubes today. Like look at all the fruiting chamber designs of the past, they were much more sophisticated. Now people can grow cubes in an unmodified monotub and get great yields, it doesn't get simpler than that. Spore print-> spore print for many generations, eventually you'll end up with genetics that are better suited for your specific growth conditions. Evolution or whatever. Think that's what's happened with cubes, they've become way more CO2 tolerant after decades of low-tech home cultivation and are much easier to grow now because of it. Or at least that's what it feels like. I failed high school biology so what do I know haha.

Exactly what I've thought, Hans. With cubes, who knows how many times all those varieties have been grown out over and over and over again? They have become very domesticated. Pan cyans doesn't have the numbers like cubes. Maybe that will change one day.

That was one of the first things I noticed when I was researching before getting into cult. Looking at the ancient threads this site suggests there’s a night and day difference in ms grows from then and now.
That would also explain why it seems a lot of the guys who’ve been doing this a long time are wary of ms.
When I got basically a canopy my first grow after using a syringe and having no idea what I was doing I was almost positive it had to be the years of mushroom eugenics making it very hard to get a shitty yield.

I'm glad I asked what I felt might be a dumb question.
I think there's something to be said about the "domestication" of cubes vs pans. The amount of cubensis grows compared to other grows is exponentially greater, so sure, that's allowed those "good genes" to be passed down and improved and changed and spread and rinse and repeat. Other types, not so much. Maybe I'm overthinking it and maybe there really hasn't been enough time in an evolutionary sense for that to have taken place, but it seems like basically the same principle as to why some people take isolates. Just on a bigger scale and longer timeline.
I think it'd be very interesting, albeit time and resource consuming, for an experienced grower to take that on as a project, of seeing what sort of bare minimum conditions or setup they could manage to accomplish a moderately successful pan grow with.
Or I guess I'll just fucking build a little portable greenhouse and keep on trucking.

There’s a cube called purple mystic that’s relatively new, like a few years, and I’m pretty sure they were having problems getting it to even fruit for a long time. There’s a whole thread about it where the guy actually discovers it in Malibu and spreads the prints via shroomery.
