Is this a common mutation with pans bc I've had three. One in each tray. They look like the aliens in war of the world's.

Man someone gets Blue Helix's attention, you've gotta have a badass flush going on. It's good to see you're still here, because you are literally the reason i made a profile on here. I personally just started my very first grow ever, and i chose to start with pan cyans, and everyone says to look at your stuff. I would LOVE to get feedback from you, or even maybe some secret tips? Anything, you're a kind man!

Greetings and salutations fellow Copelandians!
Welp. I gave the pan jams my best effort yet but to no avail. Ive been at the pan cyans for two years now! LOL. :-( I made a JOC Tek style Jartha and that part seemed to be functioning properly. I maintained 80º F temps and used cycle timers to go from 95% - 100% humidity down to about 85% over a 15 minute cycle period. One possible issue with this Jartha was that it was not sealed very well at the bottom edges. I did not really see a way to do this with my plastic cover. SO its possible the fan at the bottom was not pulling enough air in through the HEPA filter at the top and down over the trays...although my humidity sensor was located at the top of the Jartha so I do still think I had proper evaporation occurring. I am rebuilding the Jartha anyway and using a proper grow tent so I should have guaranteed proper airflow with the next go around.
Anyway, what happened was what I would have to call overlay and too much evaporation. I also saw a fair amount of bluiing on the surface where the overlay was happening. At the point when these pics were taken the sub is very much dried out and separated from the sides of the tray:

My sub is one possible culprit. I did not use JOC's recipe but something closer to what BlueHelix (good to see you here again!) used for his docmented Pan Cy Aus grow from a while back. I added vermiculite to my sub though. I am thinking that poo I used was not fluffy enough as there was a faint whiff of anaerobic something-er-rather happening by the time i pitched the trays. I have some cpoo dairy screenings now that look much more promising and very fluffy.
Genetics would be the other big possible culprit. Before I had read up enough on what to look for on agar plates (wispy growth) I had already made LC with the fastest growing, most dense looking growth. The genetics are from a well known sponsor here and BLueHelix used to complain about the tendency for these same PanJam genetics to overlay (Im not supposed to mention sponsors by name, right?)
I tried pancakes buried in perlite in a terrarium and experienced the exact same thing...which also points to genetics.
So where to go from here?
Should I start with different genetics? If so, please feel free to PM me with good sources for spores.
Should I just try a different sub with the same genetics? If so any recommendations are welcome. I was going to try the JOC tek pasteurized / slightly aged tek as well next time anyway. I seem to be able to colonize my various different subs withouth a problem.
Last question... If I still have grain jars of these genetics that are now over a month old, should I even bother with them? Is it worth spawning to a new sub with them or just pitch them?
thanks for any help. Im not giving up on the pans yet!

Growing some Pan Cyan Hawaiian for my 2020 Let's All Grow Mushrooms project, and just made up some bags based on Asura's recipe. See https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26434643#26434643 for details.
Two questions for the group. First, I don't have hpoo readily available so used black kow instead, and having read that it has less nutes and minerals, I added small amounts of BRF, gypsum, and coffee grounds to supplement. I figure some people will say that's not necessary, but is there any reason those would be harmful? (After making them up, realized it was probably worth checking so I don't waste my time if I screwed up.)
And second, in the picture below, how does the moisture look? I feel like it's still kinda wet, but given that the straw and grain is uncooked, I guess it'll dry up some during the PC cycle?

Thanks!

Well you aren't really following my recipe if you are using Black Cow. If you didn't adjust your water content to account for the black cow I could see that being a big mess. You can do a microwave test to determine your water content and make sure it's about 63%.

Fair enough - when I said "based on" maybe I should've said "adapted from" instead? Don't worry, if this all goes to hell, that's on me not you!
