we go through tons of petri dishes and buy them 'machine sterile'. which means they don't guarantee sterility, but they're sterile in 99% of the cases (that's for our supplier) only very seldom, we get a plate that's contaminated. we solve this by pouring the plates and then letting them incubate for a week without inoculating them. if the plates are contaminated, it will be easily spotted and they will be contained in a sleeve as well. we then discard the whole thing.
I like to wrap my dishes in parafilm and then storing them in a clean tote. don't run into contaminations often that way.

it's a good idea if the condensation is indeed a problem for you. but I think there's a difference between an agar dish and a 1/2 pint jar. if you're filter works, the air will be clean coming in. there shouldn't be any contamination coming in through the rim of the jar. For dishes it's different, they have no filter and GE happens through the rim. that's why I wrap and store in a clean place.

Cased this peace river mono on 17/11. Looks healthy, hardly any overlay. Barely touched it other than to fan for a few minutes today and a few days ago.

I've gotten my condensation down to a manageable amount but it still happens. I don't get contams through the filter or the jar but I have had condensation flow bacteria over plates im trying to germinate.
Right now if I'm not using jars I'm reusing pitris and they're not sterile. I can't try their idea until I get new pitris. If I can use these beer can bottoms to completely colonize the agar and have it never touch the inside of the jar I think that would be useful.

I really wouldn't reuse petri dishes but hey man, if it works for you, who am I to tell you not to do it Work that white thumb any way you want it. Everybody develops their own way of doing things and you have an extra excuse to crack open that cold one! Go for it!!

Hey spirit lands have you thought about turning the jars upside down? Then the condensation will pool in the lid and not on the agar

Yeah I flip them too but I don't like it bc the filter gets wet or it dribbles nute water out the hole. Once it's upside down I have to assume that condensation is contaminated from the ge hole. I'd rather just get my prep dialed in but drunk me likes to eyeball measurements.. The ones I made last night seem to be diverting the moisture around the can and the agar looks smooth as glass. I started pan cyan RDU in one and ps. Cyan t1 in the other. Well see how they turn out.
Also note that I am trying several kinds of agar and the recipes common on here make my agar soup. So I do have to kind of eyeball how much it sets up. The clear stringy kind in that pic sets up like wax and any condensation doesn't reabsorb. The box kind seems good, more like what the typical recipes call for. The yellow stuff is what I've always used and it takes way less water to set up correctly.

I added the filter thinking it might help moisture escape and also bc I use these lids for lots of things besides agar. Some of my kids have holes some don't, I use both.

In that case, I dont see any reason why the beer can tek wouldn't work. It might do better if you used budweiser though!

Thanks y'all.
What up asura! Like a potency test? My dad took two capsules that were about .65 all together and he thought he died. Kinda felt bad because I didn't think two would rip him that bad.
He said he saw Satan and he looked just like Clint Eastwood in a cowboy hat lol.
