Does length of time matter for pasteurization? I mean, can you go too long to where you kill off the microbes who want to save if you go 160f for 5 hours etc..

Yes after 2 hours you're killing more microbes then you want to be

I thT as long as you to exceed 170F your not gonna kill any helpful microbes. I run mine for 16 hours. And the overnight pasteurized trays consistently resist contam longer than my 2 hour trays.

Jake, you said you like to leave it for some number of days to allow the microbes to build up?
How do you store it until it's ready? I'm guessing not jars, like my dumb ass.

Doesn’t affect me I just run it before bed. I started @ 2 hours and just kept increasing it and continued to get furth and further. The 2 hour I lost most trays after flush 1, @ 16 hours about 75% of my trays make it 3 flushes

I use 2.5 gallon ziplock bags. I place in rice cooker. Load with bulk run over night then next day put on shelf in spawn room until use. I try and time it so it has 5-7 days to sit before I spawn it

I don't let microbes build I'm gonna kill most of them regardless, it's why when pastirinzing we measure the core temp, the rest of it is hitting sterilizing temps and the thermophils will spread while it's cooling. Last year we pushed horse and cow manure to the limits and found short of pressure cooking it's pretty hard to fuck it up

Right that’s why I run overnight because by the time I reach a core temperature of 162 without exceeding 170 it’s been several hours anyway the cooker holds exactly 162 so my no part of my bulk gets sterilized or partially sterilized.

y'know what, come to think of it, i had two experiences like that, but they were both with that black kow shit, rather than the legit hpoo i had. and pretty much all the trays that came from that stuff failed completely.

That’s because big sur moon is a con man there’s no actual statistics on black low because it’s far too inconsistent to be used out of the bag and that dude has enough confidence to make people believe it’s a solid substrate/additive...
It’s not. Far too bacterial and wet to be used effectively out of the bag. Pasteurizing and mixing with coir, maybe, but that’s not how dude says to use it...
Also it’s meant for use outdoors, where the mold sporeload is far lower compared to indoors.

i'll give him the benefit of the doubt. at minimum, there's gotta be wild regional variations in what's in that yellow bag. he might have got a lucky batch. and caps has his back, so aye dee kay. but i'm done with it for sub purposes.

Idk what caps support means he has a massive gourmet operation and still does cubes, and yet he’s not a trusted cultivator.. that may not mean anything to y’all but to me that says that his advice is anecdotal, and only credible to that extent. Ya feel?
I love caps but his support means just as much as mine all things considered.
EDIT: just to clarify jack you and I are on the same page about the inconsistency and I’m not disagreeing with you. Just saying that caps is on the same level as you and I as it pertains to this website so his support of black kow should mean just as much as our dislike for it, ya feel? I don’t actually believe that dude is intentionally, maliciously spreading misinformation. I’m certain that his regional black kow dealer is getting some solid shit. But he will go out of his way to tell someone that it’s their fault, not the kow, when something goes wrong with it and I know that’s not always the case.

nah, i wouldn't put myself on his, or even your level. i haven't really grown all that much. tcs get it wrong occasionally too. and some around here are clearly on tc level, yet they lack the tag. i always keep a salt shaker handy.
but yeah, people here can be quick to say it's user error, when it could very well not be. can't know anything for sure until you do it yourself.

Is it normal for Panaeolus mycelium to bruise easily on agar?
I've been trying to get a clean culture going and this transfer was looking good until this blue ring/horseshoe showed up a couple days ago.

It definitely looks more blue than green, but given I haven't been hurling agar plates around my room like frisbees I'm not sure what would have caused them to bruise.

Exactly, how it will get partially sterilized if the water of the cooker holds exactly 162F?
Now that i can control the water temp of my AA 75X with a temp controller, i can set the water at a constant 155F, i wonder what would be most appropriate pasteurization temperature if you could get the water at constant temperature? 140F? 150F? 160F? I can literally choose any temperature.
The core of the substrate can get even hotter than the temperature of the water? No i don't think so, it should reach a temperature equilibrium.
