Couple pics of two of my experimental outdoor pan.cyan tubs I have going on.
The round tub was done a week ago and the square tub a few days back. The mycelium had just has colonised the straw-hpoo substrate like wild fire.... So I have a question for all you experienced pan growers out there... 1)should I just leave them be - like they are in nature? 2)or give them a thin casing layer like most are doing indoors? Any advice will be appreciated..

First time really messing with pans. Does the myc usually look this wispy? I feel like it looks pretty good but it doesn't look like anything I've messed with before.

Sillystrings said: Thanks for posts all re: a lower tech way to decently grow pans. And Mac, you've helped a lot of people out! For everyone who does post a thank you, there are probably 15 more who've benefited from your write ups.
Still on the hunt for a lower tech method, set it and forget it method: I'm curious about something I'd like to try. What if you took a smallish monotub, cut out a small plastic shelf from another tub and attached it on an inside corner with a hot glue gun. Then put some type of mini, cordless humidifier fan like the link below. Charge it overnight and set it during the day. Could some set up like that somewhat mimic a full on greenhouse, even if it had to be dialed in by trial and error?
If such a setup were to work, what kind of tub would you use (what modifications or not etc..)?

Is jiffy mix a suitable casing for pans? Money is tight and the smallest crushed oyster shell bag I can pick up locally is 40lbs. I have verm, coir, and pickling lime on hand.

Yes. I belive jiffy and some lime will work just fine. Not 100% on pickling lime. Gardening lime is what I've used.

is there anything wrong with just jiffy? Made Mac's pan cakes tonight, with a couple changes that I hope wont bite me in the ass. didn't change cause I thought I knew better, first pan grow. it was just all I had and didn't have the dough for the extras.

You'll know if it's not working if the mycelium totally overruns your casing layer. If it doesn't your good. I'm sure straight jiffy has been used before.
