Something I've always wanted to try with stuff that won't fruit despite good conditions is activated charcoal in the casing layer. Something like 5-10% by volume of activated charcoal added to your casing layer recipe.

Why do you think that would help fruiting? PH?

Hey all about to make a few transfers from these. Germination plates of my first FL pans attempt. Been growing super slow which im guessing is some kind of contam since theyre from a wild print and there is yellow and what looks like primordia closer to the center. Heard this stuff was supposed to be fast. Either way, going to make plenty of transfers before I even think about taking to grains.

Any thoughts on where to transfer from? Im thinking anywhere between 6 and 9 o'clock looks best. Doing at least 3 transfers.

Pic taken this morning. Weird stuff around the middle but outer parts seem like the wispy good mycelium ive read this should look like.

kayo, is this the var. Blue Springs from King0fthajuice? If so, I have some of that going as well.
My T5 plates are looking pretty good, so I will doing it in Sept. some time.

You def want to transfer from those outside edges. Lots of good options there.

My pins are starting to pop up here and there. Wish these had the same speed as the cyans. Depending on the trip quality, I
may or may not ever grow these again.

It comes from the old studies with button mushrooms. Sterilized casing layers don't work (they must be pasteurized but not sterilized), but if you add activated charcoal to a sterilized casing layer then it works again. The idea is that beneficial microbes in the casing layer break down certain metabolites produced by the mycelium which are inhibitors to pinning. If you sterilize the casing layer, those beneficial microbes are killed so there's nothing left in the casing layer to break down the inhibitory metabolites. Activated charcoal adsorbs the metabolites "detoxifying" the mycelium surface, so that the mycelium is then free to pin. That's the theory anyway.

My thoughts are that maybe that particular species needs a different type of microbe to break down whatever inhibitory metabolites that it makes. AFAIK though the inhibitory metabolites aren't radically different between species so it's probably not likely. Idk, probably just genetics now that I think about it.

A lot of people have problems with commercial prints not germinating. Not sure about the genetics being inferior. I suppose it's possible. I will say asuras prints performed a lot better than a print I received from a vendor

It's not about genetics. Each mushroom species has different spore viability. Bisporus won't last more than a couple months max. Oyster spores don't stay viable for even a month. Etc.

Damn, didn't know that. How long do Pan cyan spores last? What about tropicalis? Can spore viability be extended with refrigeration? Seems like kind of a pain esp compared to cubes which last years.

I’d say they don’t quite last as long as cute however they move so fast it’s easy to keep a collection of fresh Prints

Colder temps always help I imagine, along with lower humidity. Vacuum would be ideal.

Yup if you can keep them cold and air free they will last longer I just keep a notebook and make sure to cycle all my pan strains every 6 months so they are always fresh. That’s y I do giveaways. No point in sitting on em till they spoil.

Second flush is a lot better!

Jake what do you do when your caps start cracking real bad? Up the humidity? Slow down the cycling a bit?
