It's not about genetics. Each mushroom species has different spore viability. Bisporus won't last more than a couple months max. Oyster spores don't stay viable for even a month. Etc.

Woah really?! Damn...here’s to hoping the prints I’ve taken of wild oysters are still viable then. And who knows if my pan cyan print is even still viable in that case! Here I was under the impression spores were long lasting...

They may be long lasting if you store them in a freezer or under a vacuum (potentially forever under a vacuum?). But at room temp and normal humidity it's a different story. You can try to germ the oyster, but I am not giving you much hope if they are older than 1 month. Good luck.

Could be older prints that have dried out. I’ve had this problem with tamp prints and I believe adas is referring to bisporus prints I sent him that we’re likely desiccated as well. I’d recommend hydrating in sterile water. I recently did this with tamp spores and they germinated in 8 days. These would not germinate on agar no matter what....soft agar, hot pour, high condensation. To note, I haven’t really had this problem with cube spores.

What do you guys to when you get fungus gnats? Any good way to get rid of them? I know how to get rid of them in a grow room but not sure when dealing with fungi.

That sounds about right. It was also a paper print but I can't complain. The vendor(reddit) tossed it in with a trade. One would assume vendors move way less pan prints than cubes meaning their stock can get a bit old before they need to restock.

I have had luck with a drop of soap in apple cider vinegar in a short glass. Gnats, fruit flies seems to like the stuff and end up floating in the bottom of the glass. I also use the acv glass when I have fruit on the kitchen table

No I put in I. The room run it at night if I have them in my tent I will run it In the tent for the night but once get em out and run it every night as long as you keep up with your cleaning you will be fine. I also have lots of sticky traps but the katchy is what really eliminated the problem for me

So here's my old Bisporus tub. About a month old now. The mycelium is beautiful and healthy, fully consolidated, yet pinning is still impossible. I'm seriously lost. This tub is my last possible attempt at Bisporus since my spores lost viability.
I have now scraped off some of the top layer, especially spots with overlay, but I ain't giving it much hope.

Bisporus has been a bitch for me as well. I'm on day 12. No pins. Everything looks perfectly healthy. Giving it thru the weekend.

So I am recently trying my hand with pans... I had assumed that pan cyan - Jamaica and pan cyan - Australia were just “strains” of the same species. I used some MS to rye and the myc looks completely different. One is wispy and the other almost looks light caked up gypsum. At work right now (lol, on my hotspot of course) otherwise I would post pictures... will do later if the answer isn’t obvious. Are they different species? Is that normal? Search engine isn’t “panning out” *buh-dum tiss*
My pan cyan Hawaiian and pan cambos seem like dud syringes... no germination on either rye or MEA agar and its been several weeks... Would a pinch of gypsum in the rye be a problem?
Cheers!

They're just different strains. Keep transferring the thick one to see if you can get something more wispy and uniform.
