How are you going to fruit? Are you going to do something similar to how it's done with the Ogre Boy kit?

I need to figure out a low tech way to fruit pans. This GH is too much work.

Actually, I plan on building a Jake Martha in the near future but untill that time I'll be trying to fruit in a little modified tote, kinda like a mono with the 4 litre tray inside, on a bed of wet perlite. If that doesn't work sufficiently I have built a very low tech self watering capilary action thingy for my trays (pics and description will be available iiifff it does what I hope it does).

But essentially, we're going for the Jake Martha in the long run bc we intend to grow a huge load of pans. However, we have yet to fruit our first (very own) ogre boy jars and the bags I made last week after your post  Don't forget the only Pans I ever harvested up untill now were like 25 grams fresh, from a kit.. Hell, that myc may even be something else lol (nah, don't think so). I'll post pics here if / when we go to fruiting stage.

Cool man. I would bury the tray in the perlite so the edge is level with in. Keep us posted!

About to make some casing for some pan and tamp trays that are almost ready

Going to shoot for 50/50+ for the pans but i dont have anything to measure ph. I have hydrated lime and 100% CaCO3 sand to use. Can someone help me figure out how much lime or CaCO3 sand I should use? Last time i used this lime i fucked shit up lol any help is appreciated :mushroom2:

Less is more often times you can get away without it. Start small like a teaspoon

Thanks last time I used this
Peat/Verm @ 1:1
Hydrated lime @ 1 tsp per cup of dry peat
Gypsum @ 5-10% total dry volume
I think it was way too mush lime, I couldn’t even get cubes to grow with this casing.
I’ll just try a little bit till I get a ph soil tester:thumbup:

That is a shit ton of lime. I buffer with calcium carbonate and for 4 full quarts of casing I only use .6g of lime (calcium hydroxide)

Right on I used that casing trying to grow PE. That’s the recipe LotKid uses for his PE. It burnt the fuck out of mine. I’ll try the .6 thanks:mushroom2:

pH is a funny thing. Everyone is starting out with a different set of ingredients and different pH water.  The only real way to know is to measure.  My water for instance is typically in the 7.5 - 7.8 range.  pH is also logarithmic so the difference between 7 and 8 is a factor of 10 (and 7 and 9 is a factor of 100).  Even common national brands may source from different locations depending on the locale.  It's also common for municipal water sources to change between spring and fall / winter depending on snow melt and other factors.

So in short, use weight/volume measurements you see for pH adjustments as a starting point.  Measure and verify for your specific situation (and check throughout the year as it may change).

Sorry, I was assuming that distilled water was being used. If not, it should be for the exact reasons you have
listed. Makes it super easy to formulate casing recipes that you can share reliably.

Hey Jake,

I'm curious. How do you know if a culture is a monoculture?

It’s all one uniform growth, with a magnifying glass it’s much more easily apparent but you will notice there are not different section as you can see in this zap dish there are at least two clear different sectors

Ah, ok. That clear. So if you transfer often enough to lose the sectors, what you end up with is called a monoculture. Please correct me if I got it wrong.

Yes you can isolate by sectoring or hyphae tipping. Cubes are a little easier to spot the sectors. Pans are a little more tricky but once you learn what you want it’s easy. Just takes practice

Yes that's it. Practice practice practice! I'm loving all of this so I will have plenty practice.

Got a lot going atm (well, for a noob) Azures on agar, ps. Mex on agar, pans in the bag and in jars / agar and about 10 varieties of cubes. I'll be transferring a lot of dishes the coming weeks / months.

Thanks for answering Jake!
