Thanks Jake!, yes I live in a rural area where there's abundant straw and horse manure as I know folks with their own stables. That substrate would cost me nothing and since that's what both species can grow on I'm now more confident to go with hpoo 30, straw 70 and some verm for moisture.

Coir is the most expensive thing I buy for mushrooms, and that's what I get it at (same cost). One brick will also work out for about 6-8 shoeboxes. If I lived in certain rural areas though... I'd have straw logs out the ass for the same cost or less.
That said, yeah, I'll still recommend everyone use coir because of ease of pasteurization and unlikely addition of contams compared to hpoo/straw.

Looks like I'm off to figure this out on my own. I guess I picked the wrong random syringe... for some reason I grabbed it and thought "huh... I think this is one of the easier exotics! I'll try it out."
Shows what I know. I guess I report on my findings/failings. That plate I started isn't looking .... so hot. I'll wait and see tho.
Hey Shaper. I have trops growing in LC as we speak. Let's try it out together and trade notes. My strategy is really just to treat them like pans. If anything is different, my guess it will be fruiting temps and/or humidity.

Yup!
Learning how to grow pans is like doing an archaeological dig through this site. I would read through all of mary fairchild's grows and anything you can find on Blue Helix.

I also will be putting a trop tray into Martha in about 4 days, and I’m putting a mini trop mono together today. I tried and failed with em a few months ago as they were some of the first mushrooms to go into the Martha and it was not dialed in yet. They should run just like pans.

Well attempt #2 still didn't get me any fruits. This time I increased my airflow, fanned more, ran a US humidifier, and kept temps between 75-80. I didn't have as much overlay, but the myc still looked all fluffy once it did poke through. Not sure if it was a genetics problem or something that was my fault. I kept them in fruiting for about 3 weeks then tossed them so they didn't get contaminated. I think next time i'm going to try doing them the modified PF TEK method with hpoo jars. Now I just need a print... Anybody wanna hook me up with one?

Ok... here's my plate of Pan Trop. You can see the the "Z" like formation of the inoculation loop spreading out a MS syringe. Are these looking right? It kinda just looks like bacteria to me, but that seems like way too much bacteria for the quality of the syringe I got. (lots of sediment/bubbles in this dish pour, my apologies... still trying to learn how to pour this shit for the best results)

wait for the myc to grow and transfer asap. bacterial bumps usually do not grow much so you should be able to snag some clean growth.
how are you prepping your agar? i only get bubbles when i pour to hot. or mix my materials with too hot of water.

Still learning agar. This pour is dedicated to my new IR thermometer, and I think it got a little too thick before I poured (120f). I was literally pouring bubbles onto trays it was getting so thick. This is my first time working with grain water:
I just bought some malt extract and should be here tonight. Going to see how that works for me for next time. Also, going to switch to less agar, like 7g and see how that goes.
