I wouldn't use antibiotic agar. You want any bacteria that is riding along with your transfers to grow so you can see it and transfer away. Antibiotic agar should only be used when the bacteria is so bad you can't get mycelium to grow.

oh ok. You think I could get 3 transfers from that? From looking at the bottom it looks like the 6o clock area is pretty clean.

You could probably take 10 transfers from that bottom growth. I try to keep my transfers about half the size of a grain of rice.

Jesus I really must take way too big of transfers Ill transfer tem today, using a less nutritious agar mix. If that doesn't work, im going to get some potato flakes so I can start mixing my own PDA. Also need to get yeast, any recommendations for brands/sites to get them?

Idahoan original instant mashed potatoes in a brown box. My first box lasted me over a year. I've never used yeast.

I use 10 grams of flakes, 10 grams of agar, 7 grams of dextrose and 500ml of water. Dog food agar is another favorite of mine. 10 grams of ground dry dog food and 10 grams of agar too 500ml of water.

How well does dog food agar work? I assume pretty well because if youve ever gotten dog food wet you know that it grows all sorts of mold and shit in no time. I bet mycelium loves it, Ive got some bags of organic dog food made from fish (I think herring) would that work or do you have a brand you like to use?

I've used a few. Usually I just buy whatever is cheapest. It works really well. I add dog food to a lot of my bottle grow substrates as well. Myc loves it. It fucking reeks when you PC it though.

yeah I feel like that smell would make me gag...
what is it in dogfood that the mycelium likes I wonder? wouldn't they be mostly meat by products? Or I suppose with the modern pet food industry its mostly grains, ash, and mystery matter.

I'm sure it's just generic meats from diseased, dead && dying farm animals. Think even euthanized pets..
In all actuality it depends on the brand.
I personally would hate for my place to smell like dog/cat food.

It's not bad for agar but PCing large amounts for substrate is really gross.

They don't render euthanized pets for food products for people or animals. They used to do this with horses (people and animal foods) (we are talking 30+ years ago), but it's illegal now. Shelter dogs used to get rendered and then the byproduct would be used for nutrient rich soils. No longer in practice either. Euthanized pets these days either get processed thru traditional rendering then fat is buried, mass cremation, private cremation, they now have aquamation (which is really pretty fucking gross), burial, taxidermy, and some other chemical disposal options.
The more you know.

Personally I think it is a marketing scheme to make owners feel like thy are giving their pets a peaceful/eco-friendly alternative to cremation when really.... the process is anything by peaceful. One company's tagline, "We at Peaceful Pets Aquamation do not want to leave our pets’ memories at the end of a smokestack."
They are just using alkaline hydrolysis which essentially uses a very high pH to dissolve all the tissues over a short period of time. The bones are then crushed manually then returned to the owners.

Shit...I'm with that, but give me the bones while...it'd be dope to have a skeleton of your pet
