Ok, now THIS is what I was after for the overlay-crazed Pan Cyans Jamaicans floating around!  That is, this is a lot closer to what I'd call a normal run for me - not the best ever by any means but good.  This is the first flush, and I have no doubt the second will be good too.

So what did it and helped these not overlay like the other attempts?  Well, I think with an overlay-tending Pan Cyan strain like this--something I was not aware even existed until these--you sort of have to make sure that the original substrate is very well colonized before you lay the trays.  You don't want any signaling that it's time to chomp down on casing material.

1) Let the bags colonize for a full week after you normally would for this Ryche Jam strain.

2) Lay the substrate in the trays and casing VERY evenly (get the rolling pin out if you have to) and compress a little.  I tried two substrate depths but think I liked the 1.75" the substrate depth pin sets better than the 1.25" ones.  On the other hand, if you are doing just one flush, you probably would get better yields off the thinner substrate with more surface area.  I didn't notice any reduction in fruiting size with the thinner substrate, so I think it's thick enough.

3) Now since overlay is really all about the casing, here's how I managed to get this one to not overlay: the casing was 50/50 pH-balanced to 7.8 with a tiny bit of calcium hydroxide (aka "pickling" lime) and mostly agricultural lime (aks oyster shell flour or powdered calcium carbonate).  I added maybe 10% per volume aragonite chips like you get in a pet store for tank gravel or marine tanks (make sure it's crushed coral).  I went with about 1/3" to 1/2" depth on the casing, again making sure it's light and very even.  With this strain at 78F, you have 4 to maybe almost 5 days of growth from the time you put on the casing until growth suddenly halts and pinning begins within 48 hours, so plan the casing depth accordingly.  The reason you want that much casing is that this strain can and easily does overlay when it reaches the surface whereas none of the others I'd worked with do (and usually, except this strain, you want the casing to colonize throughout, including on the surface).

The rest of the grow was typical.  I incubate at 78F with nearly fog-like conditions--including some fogging periods overnight to water the casing--until the pins are maybe 1/4" or so then cut back to 95% to 97% RH for the fruit out.

PS - As an aside--and I doubt this has anything to do with this success--I went ahead and bought dimmable 5k (full-spectrum) LED tubes with a dimmer.  3 tubes each $12 and the $20 dimmer was kind of extravagant to be honest, but I figure they'll last for life, are water resistant, give off a very beautiful 5K a great full-spectrum of light (87 CRI no less - incredibly accurate color!), run cool, are fully dimmable to very low levels, and make for very well-lit and balanced picture taking.  It might seem like a lot to spend on light when mushrooms don't even need much light, but in 15 or 20 years I doubt most of you would miss the cash and really enjoy the light still.  Plus, since I grow many edibles too, I like having this full spectrum light as some care more about light than these do.

Yes, this is where its at- Attention to the details separates great Pan grows like this from mediocre grows. BH is still consistently putting out the best Pan grows.

I'm having a hard time germinating a new Pan bisporus print I got. I made a Manure/MEA agar and swiped 6 plates with the print but none have any signs after 6 days even though the spores are clearly visible under a light. So I ended up doing a hot agar pour on them today to see if this will help. Any ideas on whats going on and what I could do?

Also, I germinated a previous PAN Bisporus print and it was heavily contaminated but I did get two small cultures that I tranfered to a new plate and they are growing but EXTREMELY SLOW. It's been 7 days and they have grown like a half a centimeter. It definitly looks like PAN myc though. Any ideas on what could be going on? should I incubate them to make them grow faster?

Thank you

I have 2 master jars with wedges of Pan Jams starting to reach out to the grains.

I'll be posting a growlog in the coming weeks if all goes well. This is from a 7 yr old print

Not at all, sadly. But after a long battle I had a couple clean plates. These came from a well known trusted member. I actually had to go back to some of my first few PMs to figure out who it was. I'm stoked to hopefully have some old genetics making it's way back to the community

Hi Panexperts,

The search engine does not seem to know a lot about Pan cyan Estero :/ neither does google.. Is this a newley found strain? Is this some sub strain from pan cyan florida?

After reading lots about marketing with names and after finally understanding the whole ATL#7 thing I wanted to get this one clear before I go jumping around in search for a print.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick answer Asura!
Anybody with different factual information? For example, what makes the Estero different from the Florida?

Thanks Mary, interested in your Australian and bispora I think they are not same as mine and would try, Azura wish you success!! HardMush I often try different recipes but those were just: verm, potting-soil, water+garden lime, rice flour.

Which method should I use to grow these??? [Re: Fantastic Mr. Fox]
    #25574973 - 10/28/18 09:15 PM (5 years, 3 months ago)

Someone teach me!!
I've been searching endlessly for a good thread on pan cyan and I finally found this one. I have 2 spore syringes at the moment. One with Jamaicans and one with Australians. I'm trying to decide how to grow them. Currently, my only experience is doing cubensis BRF to bulk with the PF TEK. I've successfully germinated spores on Agar using my prints and done a few strain isolations, but I haven't actually done anything with them yet from the Agar. I'm going to knock up a couple grain jars next week for the first time using the Agar that i've isolated with the cubensis myc. So i'll be comfortable with grain and Agar before I start on this Pan Cyan grow. With that being said, after all my reading, I think i'm leaning towards growing one of them out on Agar first, then using the Agar wedges to inoculate rye berry jars, then spawn to poo and straw. I'm not sure how I should case them though. Then doing the other one with BJ's modified BRF PF TEK with poo, then spawning it to bulk just as i've done with cubes. Any thoughts or advice for my plans?

A lot of people will call me an idiot or advise you otherwise with the fruiting chamber I'll suggest, but I as a newb-intermediate get absolutely excellent results with a modified PMP. That is, my fruiting chamber is:

-a 90 qt clear tote, with 3 empty shoeboxes inside on the bottom. In a single or separate shoeboxes are a bubble wand submerged from a 10 gallon airpump, and an optional but highly recommended fishtank heater. The heater obviously provides heat and the submerged bubblewand/airstone provides constant humidity and air exchange. Not having enough heat, air exchange, AND humidity is why most people fail or get shit results, and this provides all 3 in spades without compromising the others. The shoebox with the airstone usually has the cover taken off if not using a heater to help with dispersing humidity, but the airstone creates mild splashing. But, with the heater it gets plenty foggy even with the cover on, so it's highly recommended to use the fishtank heater. You can even add more airstones or a higher rated pump for even more airflow. The best PMP grow on this site uses a 100 gallon pump, but I do great with a 10 gallon pump.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=30&Number=10629682&PHPSESSID=&fpart=1#10629682

-Has enough room for 2 aluminum lasagna trays of bulk sub. 1 qt spawn and 2 qts bulk is a good recipe that has given me excellent results, but I'm gonna try to do 2 qts spawn and 3 qts bulk next time for a hopefully higher yield and to be more level with the top of the sides of the tray. This extra sub will however make it a bad idea to colonize with a foil covering, and they'll have to colonize in totes. The trays are elevated above the bubbler by the shoeboxes.

Case with 50/50 peat/vermiculite with a teaspoon of HYDRATED lime per cup of peat. The lime being hydrated is important because the other kind of lime isn't fast acting and has too much magnesium. Calcium hydroxide and nothing else in the ingredients is what you want. I use Hi Yield brand, but pickling lime is actually the same thing as long as it's just Calcium Hydroxide. It's also a good idea to get some ph test strips just to be sure. Hydrated lime could take up to a day to fully do it's work, so I usually mix it beforehand and test multiple times to a ph of 7-8.

Tips:
-Aluminum trays I find are best because they have the best dimensions. If the walls are too high like in a shoebox, horizontal airflow seems to be blocked which could hinder growth/pinning. Still not sure of this hypothesis as a lot of people have no problems with that, but this is my experience so far.

-Cakes or small bulk trays also didn't work for me, though they do for others. Full sized aluminum trays, however, worked excellently. IDK why, that's just my experience as a noob.

-Be as clean as possible. Don't cut corners. I personally don't handle anything (spawn, bulk substrate, or casing) with my hands after pasteurizing. I use a long spoon that I flame sterilize. I even bake my aluminum trays/foil at the highest temp before using them.

-ALWAYS do proper field capacity. I always oversaturate, soak, then squeeze all excess out by hand before pasteurizing in jars. Fuck pillowcase tek; it requires a lot of handling after the process, introducing loads of contams. Pasteurize like in the following video (Starts at about 8 min in), except use plastic lids instead of foil, with the center lid having a hole drilled in for the thermometer (I use a 5lb olympic weight plate to weigh down my jars):

-It's always a good idea to have a LOT of quart jars of colonizing/colonized spawn in case of contamination, error, and just to experiment with. We all know how antsy we get when we have no fully colonized spawn and everything is going oh-so slowly.

If you (or anyone else) have any further questions, feel free to PM me. I still consider myself a newb or intermediate at best, but I've gotten excellent results with Pans and have had many profound trips that cubensis can't compare with. I'm always learning and experimenting, so whatever I write is subject to change. More traditional methods have worked for others, but I feel this is the best way in terms of ease and room for error.

Sorry there's no pics; I don't have a camera.

As always, take great care and don't half-ass this shit. Gotta go Heisenberg for Heisenberg results.
