I want opinions on whether to case now or later and was considering vermiculite and a little sand mixed in.

Colonization looks a bit patchy in those pics but I'd prob case that.

It gets less patchy by the day and its cutting through the sub pretty fast. I don't have any money for cactus potting soil so I might have to just verm it...things are that tight right now

I’d look at what has worked over the years and not what has just been posted in the past several pages. There have been some great grows like VL and mary fairchild as always, but overall the Copelandia/Panaeolus grows around here have been lackluster, and for a good minute
Lots of folks advocated for perlite in the casing mix, hamloaf included

Its 4 bucks for jiffy mix, dont haft ass it. Mow the neighbor's grass, take some scrap to the yard or something theres always a way to make 5 bucks in a day. Or just borrow some if you know anyone who has a garden.

Very good advice, I can manage it if I really want and I don't want to fuck it up. Anyone prepared to advise on best ratio of cactus compost to verm? 50:50?

Depends on the compost. I would bring it to field capacity and feel it out. You want it fluffy

I had some spawn I used that sat a long time fully colonized and was apparently a trich fest.
Noticed my first trich about 10 days into spawning, not fully colonized strongly like I’m used to seeing here and from my first grow.
Regardless, I got fruits! I’ll post pics later, one small text container got me my first printable pan cyan (Jamaica) and I have a shoebox with a dozen or so fruits that will hopefully mature enough for prints and a clone candidate.
I didn’t end up casing, the surface was too dry on some test containers and I got pins and fruits. I’m surprised anything grew as I was worried it wasn’t even fully colonized.
I am about to make a pan bisporus LC and I’m going to try LC to grain to bulk (case after consolidation) and also the LC to grain supplemented substrate, then break up, spawn and case.

I considered leaving it to see if a fruit would arrive, but when I see trich, I throw it away to try and control my grow area.
I was seriously gutted when I saw the mould in there, but as a positive, I was impressed with how fast the spawn colonised the substrate when it got going. I'm growing PE along side it which is much more pedestrian. I've inoculated a load more grain so let's wait and see if I can get it...6th time around.

Hey, guys. Just accidentally discovered something about Pan Jamaica and overlay. It seems they overlay more when they are covered with foil when colonizing from bulk spawning vs a tray being put in a tupperware tote for colonization. The extra airspace really seems to be good for the colonizing mycelium.
Sorry, no pics because no camera, but I have multiple instances of both colonization styles that seem to fit my theory.

Overlay is cause to much grain/sub ratio.
Over 30% grains.

That's funny, because I know for a fact that the trays without overlay had a slightly higher grain/sub ratio. I wish I had a camera so I could show you guys, maybe my "overlay" isn't so bad. It looks healthy, just too dense/thick for my liking. The trays that colonized in shoeboxes with a lot of airspace just look so much better to me, not too thick.
My main takeaway from this is that it's better for Pan Jam mycelium specifically to colonize bulk substrate with more airspace than just covering a tray with foil that has a few holes punched in. My lone Bisporus tray doesn't have this problem and colonized perfectly. With how wispy Bisporus mycelium is, I don't know if it's even capable of overlay. It's my first try with Bisporus so I don't know what mycelium type is better in terms of getting a good pinset.

Can’t rmemeber the name of the mate with the amazing grows who proposed this a few weeks ago; however, they said later that after another experiemnt that they did not see that as a truthful pattern. Subs with less than 30% grain by dry weight also got overlay.

I know that's false because Blue Helix uses very low nutrition in his subs and is still getting overlay with the jams going around.
