Just checked my one surviving pan shoe box and it's looking good. Myc is visible from above and below.

Can someone tell me when it's best to case? It's early days as there are only a few spots so far.

Hi BH,

Question, how long do you think you can store the LC starters?

Also when you are making your LC's, do you filter the malt extract? For me at 4%  LME, a lot of it doesn't go in to solution.

I'll be inoculating a Pan cy Alabama LC into two spawn bags tomorrow:

I'm thinking of skipping the grain altogether in the substrate recipe (just hpoo, straw & verm) to see what happens.

Thanks for re-energizing this Pan thread with your input and thoughts!

Hey mary, two questions. First, how long did it take you to grow out that LC? And two, are
you also going try a bag with the grain, too, just in case?

I was going to try both, but my LC is stalled or something, so I am still waiting.

The pic was from 9 days of LC. Today (day 10) I nocd. two spawn bags. Both of the bags are the same, I decided to use grain, almost the same as BH's recipe except a bit more grain. I even did BH's uwave to determine water content; here's the exact recipe:

Substrate-> Spawn bags.
Straw     75g.
Dehydrated Horse Manure        675g.
Wild Bird Seed     200g (3.75X less than Horse/Straw w/w)
Vermiculite(Coarse)     156g
Gypsum     20g
Azomite     20g(trace minerals)
Total weight of dry components 1146g
H2O(spring) ~1940g
Total H2O content by uwave method =67%
by calculation                     63%
Put 1510g substrate each to two large spawn bags
PC’d 4hr@15psi.

I think my LC went a little faster than before because I had already germinated the spores on agar. I was going to use an agar selection but decided to just germinate spores on agar then xfer to LC.

This is the LC recipe that I used: 0.2% Light Malt Extract, 0.2% Dextrose made in grain soak tea. No antibiotics. I also use a stir plate for the LC's. If its of any help- my LC's look cloudy until the mycelia really starts multiplying into little snowflakes- this Alabama produces a cottony form pretty easily.

Ok, well my LC is definitely dead. I started another one using BH's recipe (cut in half) and
chopped up a plate and threw it in.

Looks like you are in the lead. I can hardly wait to see how this turns out.

I'm just practicing here, because there's people on the thread that will correct me if I am
wrong

From my experience, I would say 5 days or so after spawning. It's really when the myc has grown over the top (really grown all through the sub).
And with pans that doesn't take long. You should have pins about 5-6 days after that.

Thank you. A couple more days I expect then, as long as there are no contams. Hopefully past that critical stage now.

Watching the above LC tests with interest also. I'm a little behind having started my LC's a few days ago. I'm using malt...not sure of %, just tried to use my intuition. I put a few flecks of BRF in each mix too. I may post results if they are worthy.

Cheers.

It's just regular 50/50+, very thin layer. I bookmarked the ancient RR tek which has never failed me - https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6020110#6020110

Not familiar with peatmoss. I know peat based compost...maybe that will suffice

You should be able to find peat moss at most garden stores. I believe you want to avoid a nutritious casing layer, which a compost containing layer probably would be (I guess), or you will increase the likelihood of having an overly colonized casing layer which will have a negative impact on your grow. Blue Helix has been posting about this just recently. Even coir should be left out of the casing mix for this reason.

Cool, I did see that about nutrition. I'll have a look at my local garden center now

They don't have peat moss, only peat based compost. I purchased a bag...Will this be okay?

Apparently peat moss is not in vogue due to environmentalism.

Probably not. Pure vermiculite should also work since it is non nutritious.

Or you could also use jiffy mix, or a mix of verm and cactus mix. Maybe throw some sand in there. I’m not sure - but worth trying.

I only fruited Pan cambos off of an agar plate, but it responded well to a casing mix of perlite and vermiculite. The perlite helps keep it loose and "fluffy". This was just something I did for the fuck of it and need to try again. fruits are small as it is an agar plate but it worked. I am considering like a 1-1.5 inch agar when I try this again.

I have sand and vermiculite...maybe I'll try that.

I'll save the compost for the garden.

Oh Perlite....now you have me thinking. I wish I had more than one shoe box to experiment with

FYI, it sucks to bite into perlite that a cube grew around, so be mindful of possibly eating it if not careful. That crunch is spine tingling, like nails on a chalk board.
