I really don't know why either, but every time I tried for a thicker substrate, they would colonize ok, but simply sit there and not fruit. I usually go with a 1/4" casing layer, but I see your 1/8" is doing fine. I've also had better pinsets by not pasteurizing the casing layer with this species. Just mix it up and lay it on.
RR
That's a 10 year old post though. Can anyone confirm if this is true about not pasteurizing the casing for pans? Anyone try this and care to share results?
I actually have a batch of casing that I just put on the stove 10 mins ago so i'm considering taking it off.
With thin casing layer they just get chewed up anyway so it's not a big deal and they are given fresh air off the hop but pasturizing is easy so I suggest it

I would be concerned with a non pasteurized casing molding.. Is that justified?

No ...but I do find it rather odd I buy my peat in big ass blocks that sit outside and they are not a bag of mold when in open them

Thanks,
Yea, man. Getting those bags buried into the perlite was fun to figure out. For the first bag I cut it open first, buried it, then cased. That was too awkward, so for the rest of them I settled on burying the bags, then cutting them open, and casing. Those bags are inside of a 106 quart, ohmatic-style monotub with 2&1/8th inch holes mediumly to lightly stuffed with polyfil, and a 4 inch bed of moistened perlite.

So I think I'm gonna harvest these today. Take some prints. They won't be very big but I think I can work with that. I'm thinking about just taking some scissors and cutting as close to the sub as possible.
And what about for second flush. Should I just give it a heavy mist or let it ride?

Dunk it. For prints I would let it go for another 6-8 hours.
A trick I had to do when printing these was to give the caps a very light mist, then cover them with a plastic water bottle cap.

Pan's are smoother/cleaner.. Cubes just feel dirty to me.
Just read this post and was left curious about bisporus. How strong is it compared to cambodginiensis, which is easier to grow and gives better yields?

Do these "swab" well for spores, or is that a feat in it's own trying to swab something so small and fragile?

I’ve taken a few swabs and sent them as part of trades, should be ok Pan spores, i believe, are inherently more dirty than cubensis as it lacks the veil like cubes

@JAB, what did you use for your sub? What did you spawn to? What did you use for casing?

spores > agar > oats > 50% HP/50% CVG > cased at 100% w/50/50+
And actually the casing doesn't have much verm in it. Its a blend of LotKids style with 50/50+. 1 tsp of hydrated lime per cup of dry peat. Some oyster shell, a quart or two of verm. Next time I'm gonna skip the verm all together. Peat is just really cheap
