99.99 said: Im doing pan tropicals in a different way thats really making a difference
Pan tropicals new mix 1 full cup water 1 full cup wheat One premade handful verm/coir mix one handful Manure
PC all together for two hours
Cut up two plates colonized agar, very fine for each small sized grow bag, then mix like crazy and lay bags on their side to get maximum growth surface
DONT TOUCH BAGS UNTILL They're ready for fruiting, and fruit like normal in your choice of fruiting chambers.
I dont thinks pans like to be harassed while they are trying to colonize so mixing up the colonized grain in the manure is counterproductive and all my (cake) style bags are ready for their fruiting chamber in around 7 to 8 days
Looks like an interesting way to scale up a pancake style grow. Putting the bags on their side increases the surface area to volume allowing faster colonization. Nice innovation 99!
Thanks marry I would have given up if it weren't for you so thank you very much

99.99, keep up the good work. this is definitely something i want to try at some point.
Mike O Voidenski, sometimes exotic mushroom species will favor a certain agar recipe more than others so it's good to try a few different ones to see which gets the best results. i haven't worked with pan bisporus but i had some issues with pan tropicalis mycelium not liking the MEA i was using but when i switched over to BRF agar it made a total difference. the fact that you got such poor colonization on your grains is troubling though because it may mean that your syringe is so heavily infected that it may be nearly impossible to clean up. if you got the syringe from a reputable provider you may want to see if you can get a replacement.

I've got pan cyan colonizing a 50/50+ casing layer... re-case or leave it alone? First time with pans and I don't want to fuck it up.

When I re cased overlay it just overlayed again. Sometimes overlay can be really bad and sometimes its just moderate. How many days since you cased? How bad is the overlay? Make sure the shrooms know its time to start pinning- i.e. good air flow/ exchange, if they're Jamaican variety make sure temperature is in the low 80F range.
Last year I did an experimental grow specifically to address overlay that often occurs with Pan cyans; it won't help with your current grow but its helped me get product regardless of overlay. Check the link below the picture.

Why does Jiffy Mix needs to be pasteurized?

Because it goes on top of your substrate lol....i know some actually comes pasturized or even labeled sterilized wich is actually just pasturized but often it just comes mixed

Coir should never be used for casing Pans. Did verm and works perfectly. Other than the extra cleaning of the root at harvest.

Yes I know where the casing layer goes I was hoping for a more scientific explanation. I understand that pasteurization demotes certain organisms and promotes other, I'm just wondering what kind of organisms there are in Jiffy mix and which of those that are beneficial and which are not?

That was a couple days ago. I upped the FAE. Temps are lower than I'd like & rH is around 80.

Speed has 3 partial quarts of Pan Tropical on Oats and will be mixing it with the substrate this evening.

1. is it best to keep the inoculated substrate in darkness during the spawn run until it is fully colonized?
I've made several attempts in the past but never got to pins. I need to do everything right this time.
I think one mistake I made was casing too early...not waiting till the sub was fully colonized. My casing got fully colonized and no pins. it ended up being one block of colonized material.
I'm using 2 year old composted cow dung from a Organic beef farm in my sub mix. This should be good.

1. No 2. Casing will be eaten if added early
Preferably, use a casing with little to no nutrition and slightly basic (higher pH)
This layer keeps floaties from germinating and gives some wiggle room to keep the substrate below at an optimal moisture level.
I used verm on Pans and it works great as a casing. Mist till pins, then only bottom water. Higher FAE than cubensis

Thanks Snazz, I'm using Jiff mix as my casing and I added lime to bring up the pH. and sent it along with a sample of my substrate mix to a lab for analysis, waiting for the results but I have at lease a week or two before casing.

Doesn't jiffy already have lime in it? And couldn't you just use a cheap litmus strip to give you an idea of the pH of the casing?

My understanding from reading here RR and others said Jiffy is balanced to a neutral pH of 6 for general plant growth. RR and others also say to add lime to your casing material to bring it up to 8 to prevent the growth od mold and other contaminants.
I tried pH strips and using them in soil makes a dirty strip that I can't color match to the chart. I'm a member of a Co-Op and get a discount on Soil Testing, $30 for two samples; $8 of postage is prepaid.
I have had three batches go bad on me and I'm trying to cover all bases.
