Re: Official Copelandia/Panaeolus Thread [Re: maimunji]

I have tried two "brands" of pelleted horse manure in different ratios 5-20% dry mass to CVG - and my conclusion is these were not composted enough before drying and pelleting for mycelium to thrive in - in fact it had troubles colonizing areas with the dung until thriderma got in the way.

Once I got my hands on the composted fresh horse manure, the story is completely the opposite - no contamination, after a few days it is all colonized. And smells somewhat earthy, not unpleasant at all.

PS my first post at The Shroomery, so I should say hello and thank you all for sharing your experiences and teks to the world! Couldn't move forward without you!

Yup, this exactly. I didn’t even get as far as trying to grow anything with the pellets. After smelling how fresh the manure was I opted to put them in the garden and sourced better composted manure.

For completeness though 450g of pellets took about 1000ml of water to reach field capacity.

Welcome aboard!  What kind of composted manure are you using?  If you’re having problems with bacteria/molds, might I suggest looking into Mojave’s CV+.  It works great stand along but I like to use a 12.5% worm castings addition that makes my trays perform just as well as manure based trays.  Worm castings are A LOT more tolerant to bacteria than manure.  My go to for worm castings is vermisterra.. good price for a high quality product.  I know some composted manure can be pricey unless you’re using black kow or the like

Thank you  @fahtster, it's a good place to be at that's for sure!

I use my locally bought manure from a supplier who operates stables and sells it online for gardeners for the equivalent of 12$/60L/16 gallons. Offer said that it has been properly composted and smells earthy - I have given it a try and it seems to be a real deal. It may look nasty, but not to discourage newcomers - smell is next to nothing and is very discrete, much better then pellets in that regard.

Thanks for the Mojave’s CV+ and worm castings recommendation - will definitely take a look into this for the bacteria control.

I have yet to harvest fruits, but finally moved forward from pelleted manure and trichoderma catastrophe right after spawning.

These boxes are 65/30/5 coir/manure/gypsum cased with 50/50 peat, verm and some pickling lime for the PH.

One box is spawned 1:1, second 1:2. Higher seed ratio seems to invite more bacteria and have more metabolites, but this may be cause by other reasons as well.

No, the dry stuff they offer.

Right on.  Well if that fails ya, 100% try Mojave’s cv+.. even without the worm castings.  It’s ridiculously easy where no pasteurizing is needed.  Just bucket tek.  Especially, if you haven’t grown any pans yet.  You won’t be disappointed

You're pasteurizing if you include worm casings right?

I dont know this brand but in my country there is basically soil amended with worm casting think its called biohumus.
Is this ok?

Idk, I’ve never used it but a quick google search gives some ppl saying they’re both called that sometimes and sometimes considered separate.  Only one way to find out

I believe those blobs are sclerotia.  Essentially.

Thanks for chiming in tree frog, I was really considering throwing it out. I just spawned it and it smelled perfectly clean, but we will see if it produces any fruits. I found a 6 year old thread from Blue Helix and other TCs discussing possibly the same issue I am having and it seems like fruits may be a little more difficult, but not impossible, with this condition.

Mixed some horse manure I shredded with some (also shredded) straw/verm and coir. Didnt really do a specific ratio juat made sure it's mostly manure. Got it up to field capacity and pressure cooking (while ventingxd) 9 jars brf style. Got a few t1 plates going from a spore print I got from churpe! Might as well give this species another shot this summer

A successful first ever attempt at Pans.

I know they look small and unhappy, but I am really pleased with this result. I have alot to take from this grow:

1) This is flush number 2 and no contamination so my liquid pasteurization technique is on point

2) This is my first ever grow where I did everything myself starting from LC. Besides purchasing the LC, everything else I mixed, prepped, and sterilized/pasteurized myself, staring with agar. So more confirmation that my grain prep / sterilization and agar work is also on point.

3) They fruited. I was using a modified JOC tub setup, without the fan. I used a reptile fogger that came on 2 minutes every hour and I never had to mist. It was completely automated. I will be adding a small fan to the tub for the next grow to see if I can get these fruits more fresh air so they grow larger.

4) This wasn't even an isolation (or transfer?) and I ended up with fruits. This was from the LC --> agar plate #1, which then appeared clean so I spawned it. From that initial plate, I have several T2 jars spawning and more T3 plates still doing their thing. The mycelium on these plates looks much healthier and more ideal than the LC plate, so I expect even better results on the next grow just from that factor alone.

5) I get to experience Pans for the first time ever now. It's been 14 years since I first learned about Pans and have wanted to try them ever since.

I could probably keep going, but I will stop here.

Hey, also first timer here!

I don't understand why I'm getting these black spots, as you can see in the first picture, I know it's bruising, they are bruising like hell, dark blue and black. Never had Pans before, last time a saw some is 20 years ago in the Netherlands... more white in color.
So, at the beginning I had the humidifier running too often, but it's now completely turned off and the humidity is being maintained well. The bruising and aborts got better. The only thing I can think of now is the fans — 10 minutes twice per hour, running very slowly. I think I still don't really have a good feel for how much FAE they actually need.

Strain is Hawaiian, from Spore > Agar > LC > Rye > Coir + Horse Manure and Horse Manure/Worm Castings + Verm + Gypsum (1:3.5) > Peat Moss/Verm/P.Lime

Nice job, you got me beat!

It looks like you are also using the JOC tub method, or something similar, correct?

Yeah from what I have noticed, the fogger is enough to cause bruising. Although, if its still happening and you aren't running the fogger anymore, then idk what its from. Nothing wrong with it though unless you just want pristine fruits. Some of those really dark caps look like they are just covered in spores though.

The black spots are bruising from bacteria.  Same bacteria that causes bruising in button mushrooms.  Only in active species it's more blue/black than brown due to psilocybin turning into psilocin.

Reducing humidity or increasing fresh air exchange can help.  But generally I've found that it's the culture.

In other words, the bacteria can hide until fruiting.  And the last cyan culture I ran every one of them did this.  While in the same conditions my other cultures have been fine.

Round two.

This is a super small scale JOC tub style setup (at least I think, I only skimmed his guide but the principles should be mostly the same). I've got one tub with the fogger only and one tub with the fogger and a fan, which is a small centrifugal blower fan mounted on top of the lid.

The fogger discharges low into the tub. The fan from the fogger provides decent airflow so the idea is to move and mix the air at substrate level and then clear out all the stale air and replace it with fresh air, twice per hour. The fan tub is currently running at 300 air changes per hour so I'm sure there will be some dialing in to do.

Both tubs have one half cased and one half uncased. Four experiments in total, everything is fully automated. Hoping for the best.
