Xclozure, i had noticed some growers mentioning that black kow didn't work well for them so i was skeptical about it too but i figured i'd give it a try because i didn't have easy access to any other form of manure. so far i seem to have gotten satisfactory results but i'm still getting a feel for what works best so i can't say how it compares to other forms of manure. i have noticed though that the quality of it has gotten better just within the short time i have been using it. when i got a bag of it last year there were alot of rocks and woody debris which made it necessary to strain it to remove those inclusions but when i got a new bag earlier this year it was all just composted manure and no longer required being strained. i just mix it with an equal portion of shredded straw and pasteurize that then strain it until it's cooled down. at that point it's moisture content should be at field capacity and it's ready to be combined with the grainspawn. you want the end product to be evenly-mixed, free of clumps and somewhat loose but not really fluffy or anything too loose.

either way with manure you have to pasturize. straw seems like a better texture IMO

70-74 in the room. Not really sure there’s a way to increase humidity with shoeboxes so I just adjust the top every few hours to keep condensation on the walls but keep from the surface drying out

I'm under the impression that non-rhizo myc really appreciates having a tube matrix to grow inside. A borrowed skeletal system of sorts. Means the cells don't have to build strong lattices and can focus more on synthing other stuff.

i like straw mostly because it's cheap(50 pounds for under $20) but also because since it's a type of grass it has a somewhat similar nutrient profile to what pan mycelium grows on naturally which is grass in a digested form(manure). and when pasteurized properly it seems to be pretty resistant to infection. i haven't tried verm as a substrate ingredient mostly because i like to keep things simple but also because i haven't seen convincing evidence that it offers any benefit.

Straw is actually way less nutritional than grass or hay. Horses are fed hay for this reason, or graze off of grass in the wild. Pans do love straw though, but I'm very sure that most of a bulk substrate's nutritional content is found within the grains.

interesting. yeah, i've seen suggestions that actual grass would be the ideal choice. i want to try it out at some point. i was collecting some from my yard for that purpose but forgot to turn it over while it was drying and it got moldy.

Yes because hay contains the seeds...the drawback with grass is the fact that it's surface is flat and not round lime straw so mixing it with something usually helps

Correct. Wheat straw is a merely a bi-product. All the useful parts of the plant are harvested already. I gotta get me some of this lime straw though.

To me it could be Pan Cyan mycelium. The way I see the transparent ring that always proceeds the white myc. Definitely transfer material to more new dishes. And see from there... I would transfer about now... and safe the donor dish to see what it is going to do regarding to sporulating...

That's what I also thought, the rings remind me of Pan Cyan myc. I just did two transfers to two other dishes and saved the donor plate.
