Nah, your substrate (if properly hydrated) will have enough water to carry them through the first flush. You are correct that pans do enjoy a somewhat of a more arid environment than cubes, but not too terrible much like oysters or anything. You shouldnt have to open lid fruit them. Pans also explode in the 80-85F temperature range. Once pins arrive do not mist, or the lil guys will abort.

Ok, I still have some LC that I might use for some Pan-Cakes and need to pull my master slant and continue work with my cambo.

Guys, what do you think of this monotube? I introduced the spawned grain on 9-13 so the picture at the left is 9 days.

Is it time to apply the Casing? I’m getting anxious because I must leave town in 14 days and will be gone for 7.
The pic. at the right was spawned on 9-13 so it’s only been 6 days. I know It needs to go further before casing. It’s in a cake pan with foil over it and then placed in a monotube.
This is Panaeolus cyanescens Hawaiian spawned on wheat berries and then into a Bovine Dung based substrate. This is as far as I have gotten with a grow, the first two attempts went bad after it was introduced to the substrate.

OK so on the 1st pic, when I zoomed in, I saw something along the bottom side, right in the middle. In that kind of thin spot in the middle of the big patch. It looked like a pin, what is it??

13 days it a bit long I've had a lot of problem with myconge ore white mold .. Try this Spray a small area with a spray bottle and the mycelium should look like it almost melts if not good chance its white mold Also it looks very dry but if you spay it now it will really harm The mycelium, try to just get the walls wet and the lid
My subs have all colinized in 7 days so something is off with yours

I started a tub on 9/13 and it was fully surface colonized about 5 days in, cased it this morning with 50/50. Got it dubtubbed and beefed up the lighting for fruiting. Excited to see how this goes

Thanks mate. If all goes well I'm gonna try pan cambo further down the line, will remember to try your agar casing tip to get pins

I think I may start casing plates as soon as I get something half way clean, well as far as MS goes. I think It will encourage them to pin a bit sooner, and then I can snag a fast fruiting culture to finish up the cleaning.
At some point I still intend to try casing and fruiting pans on a thick, no pour agar plate, mainly for fun, and possibly some education. I also still intend on adding/making cakes with some malt extract, just to see if it would benefit at all.

Thanks guys, I need to bring some Jiffy Mix up to field capacity, pasteurize it and case after it cools. I'll open up the vents and turn the light on this Bad Boy.
I'll look closely for any pins while wearing a surgical mask.
Back to work.

Gems, Good Luck. Do yo have a picture of your sub. that is fully colonized?
The Betty Crocker is fired up; I'll be casing tonight.
The one that is farthest along is after 9 days, the other 6.

Hey fellow Panaeolus fans,
Im just about to make another attempt at making pan cyan spawn on rye grain.
I'll be innoculating from agar, multispore. Would you recommend against doing grain to grain from a master jar to generate more spawn, or should I just inoculate as many jars as I need from agar wedges?
I hope my question makes sense.

wedges are the way to go. hamloaf insists that panaeolus doesn't like to rejoin substrains

And yet I've never seen any issues breaking up spawn to bulk...agar or lc and the link to the info provided was from a dude like ten years ago with 22 posts...

alright, I'll probably do agar wedges just because I only need a few pints of spawn anyway. Less steps = less potential for contams.
I have mycelium on agar now that is about a month old, and a tad dried out, would that still be good to use, after transferring to a new plate and growing out a bit?
Thanks for the help, I'll be sure to post my progress
