For now I moved the spawning grain jars to a cooler place in the house. They are not fully colonized and I need to hold out till August 7th. I can mix them with the substrate then and be gone for 7 days. They are slow going as it is so I may not have an issue.
I appreciate all the comments about the fuzzy stuff and taking the comments under advisement. I don't want to make any hasty moves.
I'm kind of waiting for the Panarchist to chime in, he has been very helpful and encouraging. Ham... knows his Shit as well.

Just an FYI, my pan cambo had fruits up in 10 days. Pans are faster than cubes so you may not make it to the weekend to case.

There are a couple areas that concern me, what do you think?
This is one week one day into the Spawn Run.

When I take the top off this tub the smell is not pleasant.
What do you think is going on...more importantly what do I do about it?
I'm thinking I can fabricate an attachment to my vacuum cleaner so I can control the amount of suction and surgically suck up that gray matter.
This tub is all closed up with no air movement. Do I need to vent it to some degree.

I would say if you can remove something that you don't like go for it even if it was good it's still won't hurt the whole tub
2nd i dont know of anything we would want to grow that smells terrible therefore if it smells terrible it probably is not what you want

If it doesn't show mold 100%, keep going!!! Like make damn sure it is mold cause it has to be close to fruiting. I ended up with what looked like a brown mold on mine.

Speed Racer, if it smells that bad at this stage there's something really wrong with it. get it out of your main grow area or anywhere inside or your home and exercise caution when coming in further contact with it. certain infections can be a serious health hazard if you get exposed to them. in my opinion, a substrate that smells bad is not worth the worth risk of dealing with. it's not likely that it will produce some fruits but if it does they should be boiled to kill any infection.

The smell isn't sickening but it does have a sent of acetone mixed in.
It does not smell like shrooms. The spawned grain smelled sweet just like fresh maitake mushrooms when I pick them in the woods. What should it smell like?

How do you guys Pasteurize your Substrate?
I am speculating my pasteurizing process is the root cause of this failure. My first attempt went bad because I forgot to pasteurize the substrate and this FC smells just like that one, albeit this one is colonizing.
My pasteurizing process: I loaded qt. jars with substrate that had been brought to field capacity. I used metal lids with three vent holes and covered with Synthetic filter discs. I put 10 gts. in a electric Betty Crocker roster and filled it 3/4 full with water. Inserted a meat thermometer in the center jar and when the temp came up to 140 deg. I started the timer. Kept the temp between 150 - 160 for one hour. After I pulled the plug I probably left the jars in there for another 30 min. before taking them out to cool. Spawned the substrate the next day.
WTF?

i would describe the way it should smell as being kind of similar to button mushrooms but with slightly more earthy notes. anything stinky, sickly-sweet or chemically is not good. the pasteurization process you used sounds like it should be alright but maybe it wasn't sustained at sufficient temperatures for long enough. the way i go about is to get a pot of water up to temperature add my substrate ingredients and then put it in the oven at the lowest temp which happens to be 160F but if i put a fork in between the door it hovers around 155F. i've seen differing opinions on how long is best to cook for ranging between 90 and 120 minutes so i let it go for around 105 minutes. if you cooked yours for less than 90 minutes that could be a problem.

i generally try to spawn or fruit anything even if it looks kind of fucked up but in my experience if there is a bad smell it usually means shit's about to get real bad real soon. if you have some other things in the works i would say definitely don't bother.

I'm going to ditch this tub. I need to get back to my day job. I'll start over when I get back from the Salt Flats mid August. I'm going to put a couple quarts of spawned grain in the fridge. and give that a try as well as get another spore syringe of a different genus of Pan other than this Hawaiian strain...It has been very slow to spawn.
Thanks for the help.

thanks, glad i could help. it sucks when things don't work out but when you're learning to grow pans mistakes can be hard to avoid. just keep building up the knowledge and when you regroup you'll be even more prepared to reap the rewards.

Dude you gotta put some holes in the tub and fill with polly fil and have a small fan circulating air in the room. The lack of air flow caused that fuzzy shit to grow the other stuff is cool tho from the looks of it
