For those running bigger monotubs, do you mix your spawn and substrate in front of a (big) flow hood or in open air?

Open air, I can’t think of anytime I’d mix a tub in front of a hood. Open air spawning shouldn’t ever be a case for concern if everything else is good and clean. Contamination in a tub won’t be from open air spawning but spawn or substrate that was already dirty to begin with in my opinion.

hey all,

cased my substrate and put into my tent yesterday - now just referring to settings I've read somewhere that 2 FAE an hour is good, however, my timer's lowest settings is at 15 minute intervals.

I have it currently at one interval for 1.5 hour.

Seems ok to you guys?

Depending on your tent size and the power of your fan fifteen minutes might dry out pins and kill them.

If a tent is 4 * 6 * 4 that's 96 cubic foot space.

Vivosun's got a nice little 4" inline exhaust fan on Amazon for $25.  It moves 100 CFM.

Meaning, it exchanges all the air in my tent in one minute.  2 FAE per hour means I would run it one minute every thirty minutes.

Long story short, you want a better controller or a very weak fan.  And the fan won't give you dialed in air exchange with the controller you have either way.

here's the controller I use.

It's under $20, and you can set on/off time separately.  1s-999h intervals.  Also it's easy to program.

I felt compelled to wash my pans off because, well, poop. I tossed the rinsed shrooms in the bowl and at the end the bottom of the bowl had blue water in it. Did i ruin the potency by washing out the psilocybin?

i just pinch the bottom off and the actives are very soluble in water, so yeah, you reduced the strength when you washed them.

Pasteurized horse poo shouldn't have things that can make humans sick, if consumed in trace amounts. I wouldn't worry about washing.

I'm having some success with generating poo/grain spawn and wanted to share.    I got the idea from Baba's verm/brf top layer in his jars.  But did my own thing with it with poo.

Basically, I mixed all my (sifted) manure and vermiculite together that would go with a brick of coir.  2 quarts of each.  Hydrated until on the dry side of field capacity.  But, adding water to the poo first to mix it well.  Then adding the verm until the field capacity I wanted.

Loaded 200ml of boiled rye berries in the bottom of seven quart jars.  Loaded poo and verm mix on top until at the 700-800 ml mark (it was light and fluffy and compressed quite a bit after I shook it).  PCd 90 minutes at 17psi after venting for ten minutes.

Monday, I dropped wedges of Bisporus and TTBVI onto this top layer of poo/verm.  I let the wedges recover and gave them another day or two (my memory sucks as I go more by sight than time) after to crawl off onto the poo and start colonizing it.  I then shook the hell out of the jars.

Today (two days after shake), I'm seeing spots of wispy growth in several places in all of the jars and think they'll probably be spawned to coir by this time next week if the growth continues at this rate.  And this is in a cold bedroom I've been having to get creative with water tubs and reptile heaters to get pins to form over the winter.

So, while the time scale may not be stellar, it's by far the fastest I've seen with the experiments I've ran and I'm quite happy considering the temperatures.

I'll take some pictures next time I do some jars if anyone is interested.  And get some pictures of my colonized jars once the growth is a bit denser.

Hi, tree frog. So just trying to understand. Would the advantage of doing this be that by mixing the manure with the grain then you wouldn't have to put manure in the bulk substrate recipe and therefore it would be easier to pasteurize?
I ask because I have recently been getting a gray mold on the surface after casing on all my trays. Trying to narrow down the source of my contaminants. This could be way to determine if I'm pasteurizing my manure bulk substrate correctly. By maybe doing a few of these along side my regular methods. Although right now I'm leaning towards some kind of parisidic bacteria on my culture plates.
So yesterday I put some wedges to water agar to see if I can outrun to bacteria if there is any. I also changed my grain prep. Not doing the 24 hour soak. Instead I just put the grains into my instant pot for a few hours on the keep warm setting and then rinsed in cold water and left to dry for ~12 hours. I just made up a batch for some Mexicana a strain (also used coffee in the soak for this) and I noticed that the grains looked more hydrated (bigger) than usual and they did not smell bacterial like they usually do for me after a 24 hour soak. So once my pan cambo grows out on water agar going to try this prep minus the coffee for this species. But might also make a few jars with the manure mixed with the grains.
In my last grow every jar smelt slightly sweet when opened but then smelt like fresh mushrooms after shaking up the jars to break up the spawn (which they broke up easily and were all fully colonized in less than a week)
Despite the smell I spawned them all because I already had my bulk prepared and pasteurized. They didn't skip a beat and colonized the bulk quickly. I consolidated and cased and put into fruiting.
Not long afterwards I noticed some clear jelly looking metabolites on the top and yellow metabolites on the sides. Most of the trays eventually got a difficult to see gray mold on the casing and the ones that didn't looked too bacterial to fruit and I tossed them all.
So now I'm back to the drawing board with the water agar and I'm also going to inoculate a few more lme with yeast agar plates with spores while I'm at it to see if I can get a few more cultures to try fruiting.
Thanks for reading. Any advice or suggestions are welcome from anyone.
