I'm trying to look them up all in seeing is P.subtropicalis,
If I'm not mistaken the real one is P.hoogshagenii??
But it's tough to find.

What used to be thought of as P.hoogshagenii var sempervivra has been reclassified as P. subtropicalis. We all just still call them Semps.

This Pan Bisporus tub has been growing for about 5 days now.

Does this look ok, or am I growing mold? Most of the surface is covered with a whispy layer of mycelium with a bunch of patches of more dense growth.
Here's the day1 picture for reference.

Re-asking for clarification - what does Pan.Cyan suppose to smell like?
Are they meant to smell slightly odd? First time growing this species and I haven't any mycelium or contamination like this before.

Yes the smell is different than say cubes. I find cyans and cambos to have a very grassy almost fishy smell and bisporus seems sweeter and reminds me strongly of anise.

My first pan pins. Tub has a big spot of mold growing on the bottom of the tub, but since the surface is looking good I am letting it ride.

You didn't let the tub colonize first before starting fruiting conditions?

The tub has a 31mm holes as per the "Pans in monos" design with a total of 4 holes (2 above 2 below). The bottom holes are sealed with masking tape and the top ones are half-sealed. So I guess it's not really in "fruiting conditions" per se. Kind of forgot about making a top layer so the grains are exposed. There is no casing yet. Is it contaminated though or is this ok and I should just LITFA for a bit longer?

I actually just found someone selling a liquid culture of semp/hoogs!
You know, the ones with the "wizard nipples"

I was gonna wait but from everything I'm reading hoogs are super rare so I'm going to get it and try and keep the species alive!

Ok, thanks. I am less worried now, there was a slight taint of "wtf" that could be described as "fishy".
Quite bizzare but I just checked on my substrate and so far looks pretty good!

I've also asked in another thread, just putting it down here too.
I have two plates growing some nice pan cyan myc, and I plan to make a slurry to inoculate some brf cakes and follow this Tek. My question is, are there any substitutes for gypsum and lime? It will be a hassle to get hold of them.

They sell pickling lime at Wal m art
Gypsum can but process from drywall. Put some pieces in a pillow sack and smash w/ hammer to powder, or smallish chucks and blend in coffee grinder, caution it gets dusty

You don't need gypsum or lime. People grow pans successfully with coir and pasteurized manure based compost.

Take a 2-4 transfers before the mold sporulates and post an update with what the new growth looks like.
Have you made any more new germination plates?
