A small update.

Because I am stubborn, I kept one container/bottle-like-grow from the attempt to grow out the plates that had powdery growth on.

I kept this container because out of desparation I gave it a thin sand casing the day it went to bulk - more than a week ago.

Hopefully it is myc only that is coming through the casing.

I am hopeful because it looks like the mold is unable to get above the casing and the myc is.

Thanks Yoshi

That is a big help. I think I see the pattern you do and will make some transfers accordingly.

BVI picture 2 and 3 are front and back lit of the same plate. All the rest are one backlit picture per plate.

Member Kirkeng does put manure in his grain jars, he explained it to someone else in this thread not too long ago, see if you can find the post. I can't remember how much he adds but he says he spawns significantly less grain so it must be quite a bit. Some people add just a little bit of manure as it seems to improve colonization, I haven't tried either yet. If you decide to use manure then you will have to prep it very much on the dry side before adding it or it might turn out too wet after the PC. If this is your first time with pans then I would do some without manure as well just to cover the whole spectrum and to have some fun.

If you are making grain spawn, you can but don't need to add small amounts of straw/manure. If you are talking All In One jars or bags that may be crumbled to a tub and cased, that is different. AIO would take much less grain mixed with your substrate of choice.

Yea I was thinking along the lines of the AIO style but with qt jars.
I’ve had no problem with cubes so far, using just grain spawn and coir. But I’ve only done very simple unmodified shoebox and dub tub. I’m assuming big difference is fruiting conditions for pans are closer to gourmets, more FAE while still maintains humidity and surface conditions. I either haven’t read or dug enough to find a solid up to date tek that β€œEveyone” recommends like with cubes. I’m prob over thinking it.
So if I understand the basic info I gathered, the bulk substrate should have a chopped grass consistency and not be muddy with poop. Mixing the manure with some straw is fine, But just chopped straw won’t work right? Then it needs a loose and thin casing layer that is alkaline instead of coir?

@AspectOfTheCreator I still haven't had success with pans yet but those pics look like a lot of what I see before people case and fruit. #3 especially

All my cube tubs have contammed out on me. Not entirely sure why. The spawn all looked good. The tub's will stay colonized and healthy looking up until the point where you'd normally expect it to fruit. Then it just goes bad.

That's a shame when it happens like that, had bad luck with cheap coir in the past. Everything would look good but turn a couple of days after casing, like a clockwork, Switched coir brands back and the problem was gone. If it's happening across the board with different cultures then the substrate might be the culprit as you suspected, might be a bad batch of coir.

FWIW these shoeboxes are looking good so far. I assume that the third image is the coir tub. The what you called stalling culture is colonizing at the same speed as the other one by the looks of it which is what I have expected tbh. Those sluggish cultures had never given me a problem once they hit the bulk.

Well, fingers crossed.

Thanks for the reply! You hit the nail on the head. That is indeed the coir tub in the 3rd pic. Been having issues not just with different cultures but all different varieties. Going to try upgrading to canna coir.

No!? Is this really a thing?! I've switched to cheap coir since februari and struggled growing stuff.. it's called 'Yayago Kokoserde'. A man..
:fffuck:
I would be gutted if this is crappy coir and had been f*cking up my grows for so long :mad2:... let me try to grow some natalensis with this..

Damn.. this would explain A LOT.
