Yes, Angam uses hay, I think he does use it as sterilized substrate though and let's it colonize in jars. Once done transfers it into trays. Hay can contain seeds and is high in nitrogen and for those reasons it might be less forgiving when used as a pasteurized substrate but if you let it break down as you said it might be alright. Not really much information based on experience around I'm afraid.
So I would not just rely on this choice of substrate and resort to the materials that are known to work. Would be cool though if you do experiment with hay and let us know if it is usable and how to make it work.

Haha, yeah, we have chinchilla's here.. and I wondered about saving the waste material (hemp fibre which is loaded with chinchila poop).. but decided to just use bagged manure and straw, the ammonia smell is horrible. I don't have a place where I can dump and age it.

Interesting. Glad you mentioned this as I just did the same thing, but not by design.
I left some Muda bottles colonizing too long. When I popped the lid off I was greeted with a thick spongey white mass of mycelium. I was pretty sure nothing was going to fruit off of that, so I broke up a few of the bottles into trays. We’ll see if they recover. I cased a couple of the bottles to see if they perform any better, but don’t have high hopes.

I have a herd of these little poo pellet dispensers, they go through lots of hay so I have lots of the fine pieces and dust from the bottom of the bags/boxes. I’m going to give it a try and report back. I know for gardening, rabbit and Guinea pig poop doesn’t need to be composted and aged as it’s not as “hot”, but I’ll expose it to the elements a bit and leach out some.

Alright 3 days in and the trays are showing some overlay, hope that won't mess up the pin set.. maybe I cased to soon.. applied thay layer as soon as it was fully colonized.. but who knows the trays have a thick substrate, maybe the centre wasn't fully colonized . Moisture beads everywhere on the casing

Fingers crossed.. expecting pins in a few days.

These grain/manure jars are REALLY taking off. Far faster than all the jars with grain alone. Havent even shaken them aside from the initial inoculation. 8 days after a2g

Will be real cool if these can be taken to completion.

Does anyone know if you can store grain water for a long period of time so that you can use it later when making grain water agar? I'm trying to avoid having to make grains every time I want to pour some grain water agar plates. How could I do this if possible, store in freezer/refrigerator?

Bisporus? I put a couple Bisporus subs into a trashcan grow and they collapsed leaving indentations. This is usually a bad sign! I was going to clean the trashcan out and put some Peace River in when I saw these guys. Sometimes they make it out before the collapse.

First bisporus spawn. Shaken 2x. Added a wee bit of the elk poo to the spawn. Tamp stones in the background.

Speaking of outdoor Bisporus...

Dried down to 1.2g - not bad.

I just dropped a bisporus print giveaway in the Marketplace! I have 12 available, all from my latest outdoor grow. If you're too new to access the Marketplace, PM me directly with an address to send it to.

Ha.. I just made some jars and a spawn bag with manure and brown rice as well. Inoculated 30 hours ago. Hopefully, mine take off too. Pan cambos put straight to fruiting in an unmodified 30q from wbs 4 days ago. Meanie's joining them in a few more days. First attempt at pans.

I just made 4 more. Now got 4 pan cambo and 4 BVI. Hoping to be able to spawn them straight to coir/verm. Skip the need to pasteurize and treat them like cubes.
Crossing my fingers.
Keep us up to date on how it goes.
Is there any solid info on using grain/manure as spawn? Tried to look and couldnt find anything concrete. Someone in the thread here recommended I try it. Seems solid.

There are different teks. There's modified pf tek that includes manure. I think most of what I've seen on here includes manure at some point in the grow. Whether it be in spawn or manure in the bulk substrate, it's there somewhere. I think primarily, it comes down to genetics and conditions. Im not 100 percent sure poo is necessary. I definitely plan to experiment once I nail down a few grows and see what's possible. I'll keep you posted. Goodluck to you. I'm loving all of this.
