BirdsOnTrees said: Hey guys, after struggling with stalled and contaminated pan cam plates for a while I've been making some progress. I had one stalled plate I threw in some karo water to make LC, which showed notable growth, which I then inoculated some rye berries with. It seemed to catch and has been growing for the past 3 weeks. Around 30% I shook it, like 4 or 5 days ago and it's looking as such now:

It seemed to recover from the shaking but then stalled a bit. I'm tentatively hopeful things are going well.
I was also able to finally get some really nice pan cam plates. Previously it has just been thick marshmello-y mycelium which grows up and off the plate in blobs, but around T5 I finally got some nicer somewhat rhizo growth that quickly spreads:

I'm going to send these to grain once I send the cube grain jars to bulk in the next couple days. Wish me luck friends!
I really like this idea, thanks.

Hey Aspect, You are not alone.
Exact same issue. Like this?
  1% MEA.
I also get this uneven growth

And other weirdness...
   1% MEA and charcoal.
I dunno 'bout this one. Already looking powdery on the wedge.

My hopes are on these 0.5% MEA
May josex-poke this one to transfer away.
And these are the best so far. Still painfully slow growth (cooler weather not helping).

Any suggestions on corrective action welcome... Is the culture salvageable

Yes. Basically identical. They get powdery about 1.5 weeks after they stall. They stall around the same size as all those too. People have recommended putting cultures to grain anyway so I'll be doing that soon and hoping for the best. In the past when I put cultures like that to grain they would stall out. I've solved issues I was dealing with back then though so hoping for some different results. Also waiting to see if my cultures still stall out on grain water/hpoo agar rather than LMEA.
Out of desperation and having a spare jar to experiment with, I put a tiny little transfer wedge of BVI from a germ plate to grains. Shockingly, it's going well so far.
After a shake:

So maybe I've just been being stupid this whole time and should be putting these cultures to grain. Just a tiny wedge before they stall. Maybe that's the answer?

Use grain water instead of MEA, and the problems with stalling will go away. GWA should be a part of the core process for growing pans.

Just swapped to gwa. Crossing fingers for more success. Wish someone had told me months ago. I had also put hpoo in the agar. ~2 g in a sleeve worth of plates. Hoping it doesnt affect anything negatively.

Thanks, guys! Here are a few pictures of my 20L monotubs. For the first flush, highest yield was 355g and lowest was 290g fresh.

Yup... Also, just trying new stuff now. One new thing per week.

I used to use GWA from Oats - first with yeast, then without. This culture just didn't like to get off the wedge onto the agar. So, I thought, back to basics, straight MEA and some suggestions from Baba Yaga on nutrient levels... It brought us to here. I saw a post by SmellyHobbit recently about stalling and his solution was small amounts of nutritional yeast in one's agar.
I have found some Sorghum (Milo?) a little cheaper than oats. I havent tried water from them yet. Haven't decidied on cow poo water... Maybe I will do a side-by-side run.
Sweet boxes of Trops, razero. Respect.
Aspect and I will get there. Right AspectOfTheCreator? If our problem isn't a contam, then at least we have documented an aspect of pan growing that is shared by Cyanescens from BVI and KZN, RSA.

Forgive me for forgetting who yous are, but I want to thank those who told me to transfer agar to grain regardless of stalling. Its because of that advice that I chose to put the tiniest little transfer wedge of BVI from a germ plate to grains. I would have never thought it would work but its chugging along well after a first shake. About to do a 2nd shake and I expect much more success in the future.

The germ plate has long since stalled so aparantly that doesn't matter. I was getting caught up on getting a fully colonized plate before transferring because of a bias I had from working with cubes and previous failures that I guess were from unrelated issues.

Love that you're finding some success now @Aspect! Been following your journey on here and have been struggling alongside you. My pan cam jars have reached about 60% colonization, not I'm getting scared to send to bulk but I have faith things will work out.

I'm thinking maybe I should try a different kind of pan because I'm either majorly screwing up in my sterile technique or the oats are hit. It looked good on agar. This shit came on very quickly. Aggravated with it. It's still nice seeing/hearing everybody's experiences!! I'm gonna try a different kind of print. Happy Friday panheads. I wanna be a panhead too damnit!! 💯🤣😂

Quick is the best way to get it. Right at the end is what kills me.

Hey everyone! After almost two decades from first cutting my myco teeth, I am *FINALLY* letting my balls drop and dipping my toe into the world of Pans.
Done plenty of cube runs, fell in love with stones, and now I'm finally here
Got some BVI and Estero on plates now and y'all weren't kidding when you said the myc is much thinner and wispier. Im following the GordoTek and hope to have a level of success on my first attempt(s).
The 'SGVTek' is a hodgepodge of shit against the wall (i.e. Flowhood, Martha, JosexLC, etc) and well, I hope some of it sticks this time :p Especially with these unicorns.
Rock on my fellow shroomerites!
