@0t0, yeah I dunno why they refused either, they colonized a grain master just fine, milo, but when I transferred to working, oats, they just said fuck it. So it could be the oats specifically. Either way once I moved over to manure and oats they did great, haven’t really fucked with it since. But hey it’s a nice way to kick up colonization time as you mention and still get the most of the grain supplied. I typically run 56qt tubs with 4 qts of spawn but with this there’s only like 1-1.5qt of grain. The times I did bisporus with straight grain where there was more like 3-4 qts of grain I didn’t notice any substantial difference in yeild. Maybe I could have gone for more flushes and pulled more.

I dunno, I think as I get better at growing them I’ll revisit increasing grain content in hopes of getting better yield. But from the 1-1.5 qt of grain with the manure spawn method I can rather consistently get 1.5-2 dry oz on a good clone, less on ms, but say doubling the grain content hasn’t netted me any increase so I feel like I’m just wasting grain at that point. With grain prices increasing too I like the free aspect of manure.

I imagine it could be helpful for folks who cannot pasteurize manure well either. I still spawn to a manure substrate but I reckon given the manure content of the spawn you could spawn to straight coir and get results. I should honestly try that sometime I always forget cause I just get lost in the routine of making substrate when I make it.

As a fair warning to anyone that tries this though, it is easy to over hydrate and have the sterilized product be too wet. Absolutely no water comes out of the manure when I squeeze as hard as I can, finding the sweet spot is key, overly wet still works but not nearly as well.

From my point of view they’re not ideal or what I would typically look for, however I think it’s a good idea to keep trying to fruit what you have. That will give you a better indication of what is good and what isn’t based on its performance. The plates you have don’t look bad to me, even if they’ve stalled on agar they may kick back to life once you move them to grain or otherwise. I say move forward with you have, even if it doesn’t work out at least you can learn what to not look out for.

Thank you for replying! Ill send some to grain, going to transfer to grain water hpoo agar plates unwrapped in SAB just to switch it up and try something new. Will report results in near future.

I had similar issues with pans not wanting to colonize grain well. My work around, which is what I do now, is making manure supplemented grain spawn. Making grain jars with a 70:30 ratio of manure:grain. This helped my pans properly colonize my spawn jars and led to me being able to consistently fruit them. You might give that a try?

I initially did it because the specific one I was working with at the time, Australian RDU, absolutely refused to take to just grain. Switching to the manure based spawn led to my success with it. I have done just grain for bisporus before and it took to that so it may have just been the Australian RDU that “needs” it. But I’ve come to like this spawn method for all pans as it also allows me to run higher spawn ratios without overloading the substrate with too much grain.

If your cultures are taking to everything but grain it might be worth your time to try it. I’ll also say I load my grains wet after a soak with manure that is hydrated below field capacity so it absorbs the excess water from the grain.

Funny Ive noticed and do the same. Even adding a bit of sawdust into spawn jars make the myc very thick compared to pure grain. They love it.

I recall you did some bisporus on aspen shavings was it? I’ve never intentionally added sawdust, but sometimes my manure has a bunch of wood shavings in it from the stables, they never seemed to mind. I think manure spawn would be a good use for spent brewers grain since it could help absorb some of the excess water in that stuff. I gotta go talk to the brewery guys again and give it a try this year.

What’s good Pan/cop thread?
I have some trays of pan cyan Estero going, I’ve made it past the casing stage. (50/50).  substrate was 10%+-Hp, 30%+-coco, 10%+- V, 50%+- straw with 1pint whole oat spawn into 3 aluminum trays. After about 4/5 days they had completely colonized sub. I cased on the 7th day, 3days to consolidate. Then I opened the vents for fae but the myc showing has grey undertones. I recall reading somewhere that the grey undertones was a response to something but I can’t remember what and also don’t remember where I read that. So if anyone here has some insight I would greatly appreciate the input. Here’s some pics of the 2 trays the 3rd is heading to the compost pile if it doesn’t catch up soon.

  Edit same pic twice:

Hey fam, how do all ya'll go about getting manure? Of course I could just go to the store and get some but I would love to get some fresh stuff for my pans. Is it permissible to just hit up a ranch to ask? Do you offer to take it off their hands (free) or do you offer to pay for it? Is horse manure preferable always, or can I use manure from other animals?

Thanks in advance fam! I'm excited to be making progress on my pans, was finally able to colonize a rye grain jar with a pan cam LC I made with a stalled plate.

You don't want it fresh.
Find aged and leached manure.
Better if it's been aged 1 year or more, seen rain and dried after

Edit: any herbivore animal is ok.
Horse, mung, cow, elephant, rabbit
Lower nitrogen content is preferred, as even lower ones have higher N than needed. (That's why you can't use goat/sheep or fresh poop)

Edit2: if the manure smells, it's not good to use. If aged properly, it will only have a little smell to it, noticable when wet, but NOT STINKY AT ALL.

You should never have to pay for manure, anyone that charges you is bs, you can ask ranches or stables or Craigslist even. I like horse but most animals can be used, I personally avoid cow because the texture isn’t good imo. As psilocybist stated dried and leeched is what you want. Though I’ll say I pick it up fresh and sun dry it for a week or two in my backyard, usually it gets rained on a bit too, once bone dry all the ammonia has evaporated out and it gets put in barrels for storage.

You can call a stable. Theyre used to people taking manure off their hands and it will not raise any suspicions. All the ones ive been to seem surprised im only taking a 5 gallon bucket worth. They usually have a big mound somewhere on the property where they pile it all. Call ahead of time.

Used roughly a dime sized crumb of Pan Cambo on a fully colonized BRF puck to inoculate a quart of WBS.

What are the odds of achieving a quart of clean spawn from this?

I've added hardwood sawdust to my subs for a long time, lately I've been adding Spruce shavings instead. They work fine in a mix, but the mycelium won't fully colonize them when there's no manure. I assume the texture is way too fluffy.

Ahh, spruce that was it. Kinda wild a conifer works out like that, I would’ve thought the oils would inhibit them, or maybe spruce has different oils than pine? I should learn more about trees to be honest, best I can do is I’d them.. But hey the more you know.

I love going to get manure from stables for gardening.  If I get there at the right time of year it’s a cinct explosion.

I really hope it turns out. I just cut up all the agar and split 4 jars of agar to 3 quart jars. Hurry up and wait!!! I'll get a picture of the jars with the agar pieces in it. Happy Sunday panheads!! 😎✌️
