This is my Bisporus germ plate. The spores were streaked in an U-shape, and after the plate sat for some time, this dense myc formed in the center for some reason. I have no idea what it is, so I put some on grain. The growth looks more dense than normal Bisporus myc, but a bit slower. I'll give it a shot and try to fruit it outside for fun.
Anyone seen anything similar?

mlady is not excited about me cooking manure in our tiny apartment, but compost and/or worm castings would be ok. how do yall feel about these amendments?

I've found that every sufficiently ignored pan culture does something weird eventually. Here are a few that have been ignored for months:

have not used either yet but I believe Baba made some compost work fine, so long as the compost had some manure in it to begin with, which I guess almost all thermal compost does have at some point the worm castings can be very dense and muddy when wet, I know from gardening with them

Thanks! It's definitely nothing groundbreaking I was just curious why this would happen between all the germination spots, where all the different genetics meet.

I'm sold on home depot's manure compost. It's ridiculously cheap and doesn't smell. I sous vide mine, though, so it stays perfectly sealed during pasteurization. I don't know if any other methods would have a smell with it. In all honesty, wet straw smells more than the manure compost.

yeah big fan of bagged compost products as well. How does your pasteurized compost smell after a few days on the shelf cooleko?
IME doing the sous vide or crockpot style pasteurization and letting it ripen for a few days will result in a very smelly product regardless of the substrate choice. The smell does disappear fairly quickly though as the sub gets into contact with air and being colonized. Using it straight after pasteurization will be far less smelly. The stove top method will probably put the least strain on the ol' nostrils.
I had straw fermenting in a bucket for 2 weeks and that stuff made me gag.

I only prepare and pasteurize the night before use so I've never smelled any aged for a few days, but the second I open the sealed bag I do smell a strong wet straw smell. I'd imagine it would get worse with sitting. That initial smell dissipates once mixed with the grains and cased. I've never smelled manure in the Home Depot blend (but at the store you can really tell).

From JOC TEK in regard to pasteurization of manure substrate: "I prefer to use bulk that is at least 5 days old. The longer I wait the lower my chances of contams. I have noticed this very consistently for about a year now."
The way I read that is, letting sub sit 5 days minimum AFTER pasteurization.
Would anyone care to comment on experience with pasteurizing substrate, and letting it sit for couple weeks wet/at field capacity? A week ago I put leached manure (with some straw) in lasagna pan, soaked with water to bring to field capacity, covered with multiple layers of aluminum foil and recalibrated my oven so that when I set it at lowest setting of 170Β°F, actual oven temp was maintained at 157-160F for several hours.
Since then, I've left it sit, covered, and it looks like it'll be about a week before the grain jars are ready to use it. Should I be good to go, or is it recommended to pasteurize again before using?

Ages ago I read a post by mad season I think or some else and in that the member said that he kept pasteurized substrate in a tub in his basement for several month without it going bad. Now I never ever got anywhere near keeping things around for that long and I can't find the post anymore but I would say if it is pasteurized and sealed it should keep for a month easily. I had pasteurized substrate sitting in a closed bucket for a couple of weeks and it was alright. Also had a big container of casing material in the fridge which I used over the course of a couple of month. Pans are fast colonizers and fruiters too so it should be good, with slow moving species I would be more careful.
Anyway, give it a good look before you spawn and if you have the slightest doubt then re-pasteurize, seems it is easy enough in your oven.

Pretty sure thatβs overkill and will be quite loud. In the bubbler thread the OG poster had like two 250GPH pumps for a 100L tote I think.

Has anyone used a dual layer rack in a JCM bubbler or are the totes not high enough for it?
Also, has there been any consensus on the smallest pump size (in GPH) per volume of tote? What constitutes high FAE for pan cyans? Like 1 air exchange per minute, 2 exchanges, etc etc?

Depends on the tote you use but a purple latch sterilite tote isn't tall enough for two layers if you have any real amount of water in there.
As for air volume, much conversation about it but I haven't seen anyone test and prove how much is truly needed. Maybe they did and I missed it. I run 2x 250GPH. Probably more than it needs.

I have a local source for very high quality alpaca and goat manure. Has anyone ever tried these in place of horse/cow manure?

IIRC, I've seen people use alpaca manure. I'm not sure about goat manure, but if they're grass fed, it might just work.
