Congrats, this is pretty good.

I see some of the stems are turning color to dark blue by bruising internally. I think that this is an indicator that this is a problematic culture or not as good as it could be. Not sure what causes this but I think going back a few transfer generations or back to germ plate and restart from there could improve things.

But I don't want to lessen your success and rain on your parade too much . Taking a clone is always a good thing and it will be interesting to watch if that blue stem phenomenon is still happening when running the clone.

kicked my heat and humidifier off by accident over at the other place, was in the 40's when I got in there this morning... pretty sure that didn't help, but it was also the first time I've EVER pasteurized cow poo or straw so I could've fucked up somewhere🤷... can only get better once I learn what I'm doing with pans

I'll be happy with getting enough Pans to turn a few friends onto, from this run.. and I'll keep playing with them so I learn more, can't be too difficult... I've grown a dozen different types of gourmets and have been growing cubes for almost a decade🤣🤣... surely I can learn how to grow Pans proficiently

That surface is looking very good. It can take a while for pins to show.

Trying to put together an A-game based on what I've learned here...

I'm running a Pan grow in my new AC Infinity tent. How do these parameters sound?

1. 2 minute fog cycle
2. 3 minute exhaust cycle
3. 10 minute rest

I put a couple trays of newly cased Aussie in there yesterday and they seem to be holding up good - not drying out and not drowning.

Here is a pic of the last 12 hours. Average humidity 93.4% with range of approx. 90-97% (there is one blip where I opened the door for a while to grab some lion's mane). Average temp 73 with range of 69-83.

Thoughts?

When running cycles of 14 minutes, unless you have a very expensive hygrometer ($600+), your displayed humidity levels are most likely not accurate. It takes most cheap hygrometers (like an inkbird) quite a while to equalize to the kind of rapid RH swings seen when you go from dense fog to clear air in the span of 1-3 minutes.

It's not really possible to say whether your cycles are right because 2 minutes of exhaust varies substantially based on:
How many CFMs does your fan move?
How dry is your room air?
What is the volume of your tent?
How restrictive is your tent's intake system when the fan runs?
How restrictive is your exhaust path?

Same for fog cycle - what kind of fan do you have on it? How many discs? How much fog is it producing? What is the air volume of your fogging reservoir?

Your answering these questions won't help me tell you whether your setup is ideal because I have no mathematical equation to plug them all into and tell you it's right. I just mention all this so you can get an idea of how many things contribute to the variables - and also give you an idea of what you can play with and adjust if you are trying to get things wetter or dryer or whatever.

Best bet is to make adjustments based on surface conditions, and to some extent, cap conditions as caps mature. I have a detailed write-up here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27993602

I hear you. Lots of variables. I used your write-up to design this tent and am following it pretty closely so thanks for documenting that.

I'll keep a close eye on surface conditions over the next few days and report back.

One other question I had about the casing was the 1 tbsp/quart hydrated lime recipe. This creates a very alkaline casing mix. Is this a typo or the actual ratio you are still using?

thx  - RA

BVI looking pretty clean for swab germination. Better than I am used to with swabs.

And the syringe of Bisporus is showing some life after 4 days as well.

That is correct. And yes I still use it. It really isn't that much higher in pH than the standard casing recipes. Many use 2tsp of lime per quart and I use 3tsp (which is 1Tbs). I think I tested it to be around 9 pH if I recall correctly but it has been a while. I have tried using some other casing recipes and they don't seem to perform as well as mine. Also the higher pH of my casing seems to inhibit overlay and colonization of the casing layer. I haven't been extremely scientific about it though, and it does seem like there is some variability between mushroom species in terms of what they want (PE for example appears to like a lower casing pH but again, this is just from my limited tests). So I encourage you to try different formulas and pH values and report your results.

If you have a pH higher than 9 then it will drop over time as hydrated lime Ca(OH)2 will react with carbon dioxide CO2 to calcium carbonate CaCO3 which is lime. This means if you put enough hydrated lime in there to fully neutralize the acidity of the peat then your pH will settle at around 9 which is the pH of lime in solution. Mushrooms "exhale" CO2 so this should be happening fairly quick.

I noticed the casing looked overly wet last night. The sub was taking on a lot of water. I adjust the fogging time down and that is helping. I'm measuring the weight of the tray at regular intervals now to see how changing cycle parameters affects water intake/loss of the substrate. I assume I am shooting for stable to minor evaporation over time?

I wouldn't weight it. You could but the mycelium is converting your substrate and water into co2 which will change the weight, plus fruit development may change weight too. Just go by visual.

Yes you want stable evaporation over time. Both your fogging duration and your vent duration, as well as your rest duration have major impacts on this, but so does your room humidity and the temps you are running. There will be a big difference between a room humidity of 40% and 55% - you can't run the same cycle with that wide a swing in room humidity.

Sharing my recent progress with Estero. I don’t have a full canopy, almost all of them have fuzzy feat, some darkish caps (from what i believe is too high humidity), and they aren’t as beautiful looking as the other flushes I’ve seen shared here. But I’m glad to have an abundance of fruiting trays nonetheless!

From the advice I’ve received here, I’m tempted to harvest these today (even some of the smaller ones; leave the pins though), pour 1/4-1/2C of water on them and get ready for another flush. Please let me know if anyone disagrees!
