Hi pan people. I’m interested in getting started with this species. I’ve watched the gordotek video and read the write up. I’ve started reading baba yaga’s mono tub thread. I’ve started this thread as well and see some people are doing tents.
So, I’m almost at the end of my first year growing mushrooms. I have a flowhood, am proficient with agar, have successfully grown a few cube strains and a lot of nats. All my grows have been in shoeboxes to date.
I’m able to afford money and space for setting up a good pan grow. My question is which method is the best combination of low maintenance (set and forget as much as possible) and high success?
Willing to buy a tent, sous vide, etc…
Thanks for any pointers at getting started with getting my pan journey started.

The simplest and cheapest method is probably the JCM bubbler: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26565367
Although the air pumps are costly if you buy the size JCM recommends. I have no idea if smaller would still work well or not, but you are looking at around $40-$50 for each pump, then you'll need air stones and air hose, a tote, and a rack for the tote. Oh and a heater. Heaters are cheap - $25 or so for the size you would need.
I feel a tent is the best way. Lots of space. Require more setup time to get them dialed in but once you do, they are very hands off.

Yeah I have given it alot of though and I cam to the same conclusion as hindisght. A Tent would be around the same cost and you get much more out of it. I think a JCM is good for like Hindisght had to deal with his problem. Like as a "backup" if your tent needs mending/cleaning.

a tent build is about 200 bucks and you can get a lot of pans out of it.

So tent instead of baba yaga’s cyan mono setup? Ok. If I’m going tent, I’d there a nice straightforward write up of assembling and setting up a tent for pan cyans?

Hindsight's is the best IMO. I also prefer an automated setup to go for the largest pans possible. Obviously genetics play a role, but being able to give them a lot of air and fog/moisture also helps IMO. Otherwise, I have a hard time getting grass clippings all the way to a container once fully dried.

this is my set up that i run 9 trays in using joc tek pretty much with these items that you can find on amazon, i found variations cheaper elsewhere and prices change but mine was assembled for under 200USD.
hydrometer
humidifier
fan timer
fan
fan power supply
greenhouse
vent
 current grow

the last pic is from my first grow with the new set up and it took a little dialing in.
my yield from tent is better then the time i tried tubs. that is just me, though, babayaga has some really nice stuff going on!
ps the worst part is that i was scrolling through amazon and found most of that stuff and thought i had an original idea for a tent set up then started reading the forum again and found out it was already done... hahahaha

And if you're a cheap ass like me, a simple tub with a few holes will work amazing, too. Link in my signature.

Here is mine: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27993602
If you go a page or two back you can see another guy who made one with fewer parts and at lower cost using, I think a cool-mist humidifier and a slightly cheaper version of the same greenhouse tent I run.

While on the subject of tents, I bought a setup a while back and never went through with it because I had nowhere to vent out the excess water vapour, spores etc.
Any ideas?
I'm literally clearing out a closet rn and it would be a good spot for it minus the outlet issue.
I thought about venting into a bucket with some kind of filtering but I'm not sure how viable it'd be (filter getting clogged etc). This was when I was planning on using it for gourmets with heavy sporeload, hence the filter idea.

i vent into my living area and it helps keep humidity at a comfortable level, i also run an air purifier 24/7 i would only worry about spores if you get a huge trich infestation or fruit out oysters.

Oh nice, you don't get water on your floor and shit?
I'd be worried about water vapor getting into my electronics and stuff.
But actually, that means I could use it in the closet really and not have to worry about that.
It's a 5 disc mist maker I have.

i think that would depend on your specific environment. i have a washing machine under tray under mine. the forced air for heat and the A/C in the summer (my house is terribly insulated) keep my humidity low.

Anyone doing anything to heat just the greenhouse instead of the whole room? My grow space is cold for pans and running a space heater is gonna be pricy. Maybe I need to build a dedicated insulated closet to keep the greenhouse in?

The dedicated closet build is what I would do. Heating the tent won't work well because you are literally changing 100% of the air in there multiple times every 10 or so minutes and it would be very difficult with that much air movement to evenly heat the inside of the tent and prevent any hot spots or scalding etc. Plus it's dangerous. I don't think the mushrooms would love the rapid temp changes either.

I drilled a hole through a wall in my grow closet - that wall is an exterior wall. I put a dryer cap on the outside of the house over the hole so the vent works and looks just like a normal dryer vent. If you don't do that, you definitely could vent it into your house but the problem with that is that it would only be a good idea to do when your air is pretty dry inside - for many people that means winter only. And you would want to vent it somewhere that it could be distributed throughout the house like near an intake vent for your central HVAC (assuming you have central). If you vent it only into the room where you tent is, the humidity level in your room is likely to climb way too high and cause issues but that depends on the overall ventilation in your house.
