I read somewhere to keep the sub for pans light an airy. For my next run I didn’t compress at all and ended up with a fuck load of side pins!

They are starting to poke through the casing as well but I think going forward I will compress the sub the same as I do cubes. I did this on my Jambos and have zero side pins and is just putting out its 4th flush.

Just like potting a plant, pan substrate has a happy middle IMO. Not too loose, not too tight.

Yeah I didn’t pat this down at all. You live and you learn! I’ll just run them like cubes in the future I think!

Cool MHunt, do it! Was thinking about this as well. Compressing the main sub but keeping the top layer uncompressed is what I had in mind to try.

Just fruited with a baggy on top and switched to soda bottle once they got to big to safely take off the bag. The secret it to wait long enough. ^^^This one was ~6 weeks before it pinned and the one below took about 4 weeks. It's mostly straw, coir, H-manure and wheat bran packed very loosely, the dry sub didn't weigh much. Poured some LC and waited. Was planning to have these as a short cut to some clone material but they took much longer to colonize and fruit than I thought so ended up doing regular tubs instead to get clones.

Damn, I changed my agar from LME to LMEY and it took like 3 days and they almost fully colonized my 8cm petri dish... Fast little buggers...

Unrelated but that's how I run PE, so I think I would have instinctively carried it over to Pans.
I'm behind schedule but as soon as I get a spare hour or so I'm going to be making some T1s from my jambo plates, hopefully tonight but probably not
does anyone have, or are there albino Pans in rotation? I imagine that would be one gorgeous tub!

Cool, how much compression are we talking here?
I am going to clone these fellas here and see if that pheno is something that can be preserved.

Thinking "Panis Envy" or "Max PanE" would be good names

Cloned to water agar. Took tissue from inside the caps and also dropped almost a whole cap as well. Let's see how forgiving WA is.

Haha, yeah Maks Panes would be cool. Love the mottled PE stipes, would be great to stabilise them!
I use a cake icing smoother thing to smooth and compress my sub. Nothing too crazy, just a firm compress exactly the same as I do for cubes. Hard to explain but say you fill your tub with grain and sub and it sits uncompressed at say 3” by the time you’ve finished compressing it, it’s nearer 2”
I pay particular attention to corners and often add a little bit more sub into corners and pat them down nice and tight to the corners.

@MycHunt - The cake that was fruiting ended up being Tamps. During pin stage, they looked just like the white pans I was looking for. I never have mislabel issues as I'm meticulous about that. What had to have happened was that, I know I was growing tamps in the same tent as I was growing the previous generation of these pans..... and these pans produce VERY few spores which is partly why they appear so white - so much so that when I swabbed the gills, I must have picked up some tamp spores that were floating around inside the tent and found their way onto the pan gills. There were probably more tamp spores on those gills than pan spores. That being said, I did grow out several cakes for this generation, all from different MS plate transfers so I am hoping one or more of the other cakes will produce the pans. A couple are in the tent now and another one or two are still in the jar colonizing. Fingers crossed.
