Welcome back!
I'll be interested to hear if your spores are viable or not. My Alabama was not viable after sitting, and so far, I'm not liking any growth I've transferred from my Peace River germ plates. I've had both prints for a year and a half, but I don't know how long they were taken before I got them. I'm wishing you better luck!!!
(General Update:) I called it quits on the cow digestive system simulation experiment. Even after holding one germ plate at 90 degrees F for 12+ hours, and another at 101 degrees F for 48 hours, not those nor the control plate ever showed a hint of germination. Other than the heat treatment, all jars were held at room temperature, and were given 14 days to germinate. There wasn't even mold spores nor bacteria that ever showed signs of life.
Before I pitch those prints, I'm going to attempt to inoculate some BRF pucks with homemade spore syringes as a last resort.
I made up 14 fresh agar jars last night, and I corrected the amount of agar agar I used. My last batch was a little too hard, but my pearl oyster did fine on it, so I know it was good enough to grow something. Since it's likely already too late to salvage my old prints, I will be swabbing some bisporus this morning! I would be sad about losing the Peace River and Alabama, but having bisporus for the first time helps ease the pain.

Did you try rehydrating your spores or using a really soft agar mix? Sorry to rehash old stuff. You know what I'll go find it and come back.

0t0lerance said: So just wanted to share this experience on 0.25gr dried pan bisporus:
Yesterday I went to the cinema with a friend, movie was starting at 21:30, so we went to the city by bus which takes 30min to get there. Departed right after dinner, around 17:45 immediately took the capsule before the bus was there. So 45min in we decided take a beer and we both already noticed something was happening, so we quickly finished our second beer and decided to go to the park near the cinema. When we were walking in that direction the mushrooms were taking effect.. as we noticed the beers did not affect us (normally it would, as we both drink sporadically) and our sight sharpened. By the time we got at the park it was already pitch black outside.. but thanks to the music none of it made me feel uncomfortable, so we were sitting listening to music, talking, when all of the sudden he ha to laugh.. because 'his head became the wind' no idea what he was talking about probably his capsule was a tad stringer than mine.. anyway he started laughing really hard, which triggered me laughing too.. we both starting laughing really loud, so much our stomach and jaws hurt.. tears rolling down our cheeks.. this lasted 15min or so, then a moment of calmth again untill the second wave arrived.. no visuals nor specular visual distortions as far as I could tell. So I was a bit disappointed as 1gr was insane.. so I didn't understand why 0.25gr could be this mild.but nevertheless listened to music which was beautifull.. walked a bit around the park which was pleasant. Frankly the darkness was nice and just calm, hardly any people.
By the time we walked to the movie the trip was over and we had a nice afterglow .. so we went into the cinema, but we noticed the switch from calm/serene/totally dark to busy and noicy was not great.. the marvel (action)movie turned out a disappointment and we were happy to leave the cinema. Nevertheless had a great time and will either just trip or do just a light dose right before the movie starts (did that before and was a blast).
Decided to up the dose to 0.5gr next time and just go the park.. not the cinema.
Cool! Remember the effects increase exponentially with dose so 0.25 is quite mild, even 0.5 is not too strong but 1g will catapult ya. I'd personally have a bad time taking any amount after eating, AND drinking beer. Try not to do that the next time and see if it's any better.

The light probably played a part. It's exactly the same culture I ran before in monotub and bags (actually at the same time but this one 'failed').

I remember chatting to JOC not long after my first harvest, he inspired me, lol. I went in and had 2g dry for my first Pan trip. Absolutely epic, it was like when I was 16 eating fistfuls of liberty caps on the mountainsides back home. Total madness, complete separation from time and space, giggles for fucking hours. 10 out 10 would defo repeat and recommend.

I had outdoor pans turn that reddish brown color under certain climate conditions.

It's been a few years since I came across Zifozonke's thread on an unusual discovery near the beach in South Africa:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26382522/fpart/1/vc/1
I've been wanting to have a crack at these mystery pans for a long time, and was recently gifted a print from a very generous fellow shroomerite. It was a very fun challenge to fruit, reminiscent of bisporus, but also very unique in its own way. This is a first pass on my standard pan sub(HPoo/straw/corncob pellets/verm). Vegetative growth is fast, but fruiting took a few weeks after casing.

IMO this is a beautiful species(without a proper name yet) that deserves more attention. Can't wait to work with it some more. Thanks Zifozonke, for introducing us to your beach pan!

I remember his thread, back then I thought those striate caps were quite unique and gorgeous. Nice to see that they still have this feature.
Good work and thanks for sharing.
Edit: Oh wow, I just saw that the thread was updated recently with a gene sequence. So this mushroom is closely related to panaeolus cyanescense but it is not clear if it still belongs to this genus or if it is a new species all together.

Very cool Elpico!!! Congrats! Beautiful Pan mystery South Africa!! as they were not very easy to fruit, even they colonizing fast and strong, they reminded me bisporus too but seems different, did you specifically bioessayed them? (observed their dark bruising but powdered them with other species so didn’t really tried)

Those look awesome Elpico. I have some in Lc right now and am about to go to grain with them. They look a lot like Bisporus, I agree. So had someone sequenced them yet?

There may be hope yet...
Of the three plates I streaked with Alabama, one seems to have germinated in one place only on day 8.
My first sight of Pan Cyan mycelium I hope

Thanks, guys. They resemble bisporus with the hygrophanous cap, but differ by the olive/brown color and striate cap margin.
V.L, I agree on the challenge to fruit these, but starting out with good genetics is half the battle No bioassay yet, but I am told they pack a punch.

Elpico, Yes the striate cap margin was something quite specific for a Pan on mine too:
Hindsight pretty excited to see how it turns for you as you mastered so much on bispo! Good luck!!

Is WBS a viable spawn option for pan cyans? It's largely millet and milo so seems like it should work, but I don't see too many people running WBS for pans.

As long as it's prepped right, pan mycelium will eat it up. That's exactly what I have been using, minus the sunflower seeds. I take the time to pull them out, but it's probably not at all necessary. I do it because they seem to over hydrate once the millet and milo are hydrated correctly.
Do you have cultures on agar already?

Cool, wbs is what I have and am most confident at prepping so I'd like to use it if it works fine. I have spores on agar awaiting germination. Just getting all my ducks in a row

Very cool! Waiting for bioassay to see if it's worth the wait. Lol. Few weeks to fruiting sounds like a lot.

Well, here is batch 2.
They are just starting to pin. I’m a little concerned that one of these pans is coming in with super thick coverage of pans, very reminiscent of my previous grow. Baba said he has not seen a positive outcome when they grow like this. I guess time will tell, but I’m concerned I have another Jellyfish grow underway.
🤞
