Has its place for sure in this hobby. I’m a lazy fuck so I tear off a bit of masking tape and scrawl illegible shit on it with a sharpie.

“Is that a 3 or an 8!?”

Definitely need to reinstate the label maker! Especially for long term shit!

Here’s a pic of some Pan Jambos in a mono. 6 days from casing

"illegible shit on it..." :laugh2: I know the feeling!

Do the printed labels hold up to clorox wipes, or iso when you wipe them down? I've washed my sharpie lettering off by accident.

Haha, I’m 99.9% sure they do as they’re sort of laminated I think. I know they can be a bit of a twat to peel off of jars and the like. One of the reasons I love painters tape.

Dang, ekabpils! You're killing it, AND showing a great example of variety between different cultures. The PHV I've played around with showed the same kind of variance depending on what culture it was.

I wonder if Jake's forced hybrids are exhibiting more genetic variety than non-crossed species. Hindsight had that NEC D culture that looked all white. One of my PHV cultures were all mutants, it makes me think some genetic freaks should be expected to pop up here and there.

A particularly large fruit producing culture, and/or a particularly potent fruit producing culture could be found by accident any day now. Imagine SuperPans! Jake might have to cross NEC D with PHV, for science!

Oh, this is going to get confusing... Just to help, can y'all please just call me "Ghia" if you're ever referring to me. For a second I was wondering if I had done some hybridizing I'd forgotten about. :laugh2::gethigh:

You got it. I should have referred to him as JOC, or JakeOnCid. He's just such a legend in this thread, (and others), that he kind of owns the first name status. I hope you're doing well JOC!

I can concede the name to him in this group based on seniority and accomplishment, but as a Leo I'm really just doing so to show how magnanimously humble I am.

I love how the most obvious things elude me! That's a great pro-tip! I bet packing tape will last a while in a FC as well before losing it's grip. I tried using masking tape by itself to mark trays with different species or cultures, but they all started to grow mildew or mold. Sharpie on glass didn't last in the high humidity either, so I didn't have a good way to label them.

Thank you!

Alright, here's my test on the weight of water by volume. I admit the results are inconclusive, but you can see they are enough to put into question the 1L=1kg belief.

Firstly, the water temp and dissolved solids.

Next, a test on one scale to measure the weight of 30mL of the water in a syringe.

And here is were things get weird. I will agree that at first glance it might seem that the error would be in my flask's labeling, but I have tried this with several different 1/2 gallon Ball jars with the same results. You can see the line I drew on the flask to mark where 1kg is in volume. And as you can see from the last pic, the scale is dead-nuts on.

For comparison, here is the same volume of water at almost 95F warmer than the first test. This sample was just hot city tap water that has around 360-380ppm dissolved solids. That means (regardless of ppm) there is only 0.1368421053g loss of weight per degree Fahrenheit increase in temp.

See that little bubble in the syringe? That's where that 0.02 grams is missing. :laugh2:

Does your flask say "APPROX." near the 1,000 mL mark?

Yes, as do they all, and as is clear in the pics.. But like I said, I have tested this with multiple 1/2 gallon mason jars and the average for all of them has been around 960 grams at 130F per "1000mL" mark on each container, with only single-digit variances on weight.

You're more than welcome to run the test yourself and back up your claims as I have.

Cool pic. Sorry for the :offtopicman: question but how do you get a black background like that?

you need a black background and the object has to be well lit. Turn the contrast up and tad.

All I am postulating is that when the metric system was created in the 18th Century their water filtration methods were crap, or nonexistent. Your claims about water temp are really irrelevant, seeing as when the system was created it was "A liter of water at a standard temperature weighed one kilogram". "Standard temperature" means room temp.

I personally trust weight measurements, over volume measurements, especially on mass produced jars. Those markings were made on the original model, which made the molds used to form the jars, so those are anything but scientific. Look at how close the syringe was though. That has to be far more calibrated since it's a medical device, and that result was WELL within the margin of error for accuracy.

Let me throw something else out there: Our digital scales only measure the weight of an item. Weight is not necessarily the same as mass.

Mass doesn't change depending on the gravitational pull, but weight does. So we would weigh less on the moon, but our mass would remain the same. There is a slight gravitational difference from the equator to the poles, so weight can technically change a slight bit depending on where we are at on Earth.

In order to measure mass, balance beams have to be used instead of a scale. (Of course, I don't think the gravitational variable could change the results beyond 0.001%)

Last calculation I'm up for is this: 1,000 mLs of water at 130 degrees F should have a mass of 985.96 grams. If the average you were getting was around 960 grams, that's a difference of 24 grams, or roughly 24 mLs. That is only a 2.4% margin of error, so I could easily chock that up to the jar and/or flask manufacturer.

Since I helped take the discussion so far off of cultivating pans, let me try and get it back on topic. (No judgement on anyone, I like the discussion but I can sense someone is about to tell us to get back on track.)

I failed one attempt at Pan Cyan Alabama, and basically two attempts at Peace River Florida Cyans, so I'm about to swab both of them to plates. I have armed myself with new knowledge about how to clean up cultures, specifically using water agar to help the myc outrun bacteria, and I'll try some grain water agar with black tea added to see if it inhibits bacterial growth or not. (Old info, so I'll test it.)

I'll be germinating on grain water agar, then transferring T1s to water agar or tea agar, then T2s back to nutrient agars. I hope that will get me past the dirty ass prints I'm working with.
