Yeah pots or on the ground - both work fine. I've never had trich outdodors. My method has always been to scatter my fully colonized grain spawn on bare earth (for flower pots, just put some actual soil in there), then cover that with a thin layer of manure (I use dried shredded manure that I shred in a food processor but you could shred it by hand too) - talking about 1/8" to 1/4" thick - just enough to fully cover the grains, then cover that with a thin layer of straw (1/4" to 1/2") and water it heavily to saturate. From there, you just want to be sure it gets enough daily water to stay moist. If your straw has seed in it, that's a good thing as the grass that grows will help create a micro-climate to keep the surface very humid. If it doesn't, buy some annual rye grass seed and sprinkle it over the straw very sparingly - a little goes a long ways.

Bisporus today:

It's no canopy or anything but seems like I'll have at least a good opportunity to practice my cloning skills on some of these pins

Two years ago I got a spore print from Asura and managed to grow just enough Pan Jam for three 2g trips. The experience was incredible and I have been wanting to get back into the challenge of Pans ever since. TBH they have been speaking to me since then!

Fast forward a couple of years and meet the "Pan Fan." Built it a couple of weeks ago to make the cultivation more enjoyable and more controlled. Looking forward to this fall.

My first pan pins, BVI. I was beginning to wonder if I would ever accomplish this.  The plate looked good but jar didn't look real clean. I had some leftover C-V substrate and mixed, hoping something would happen. Layered over about 1/2" of substrate. They pinned before fully colonized, otherwise I would have Jiffy-cased it.
Any opinions on plucking one from the cluster and cloning it?

They look tiny. Could be genetics, or FAE. In any case, I wouldn't clone fruits like these.

reminds me more of some sort of contam mushroom, made a mental note of it, and they look a lot like it.. maybe first check if they bruise blue at all.

I think the last panaeolis bisporus of this year, decided to just harvest the remaining ones as the fruits are just tiny.

I'm pretty confident it's Pans. Also, my Bisporus is pinning again indoors! Pics soon. My fruiting technique is still a bit messy but following the same guidelines each time does yield results.

It really is an absolutely perfect hunting spot.  No fear of trespassing haha.  And it's over 100 acres.  I haven't even gotten  near exploring it all! It's a daily hobby I've come to truly love.  But yea hardly any cubes.  I've found maybe 10

I have a question about adding food coloring to the agar.
I've heard good and bad.
I think it would make you myc show up better with color added. Gimme a shout on your ideas about it.

I did 5 plates agar tonight with no food coloring. I'm hoping this takes off.. Sterilized the loop with flame. Hit the water to cool then straight to print scrape right to agar. We'll see!! How long before it usually starts to show?

Thanks in advance! happy Tuesday!!
I hope this works this time!!!

It's really up to you on the coloring. It's just for contrast and/or pretty plates. Avoid anything with Red #3, it will likely give funky growth. Gel types work well, Wilton's, etc. But you don't have to run food coloring. I've made about 120 plates so far with no coloring added.

Sounds like you did everything right, same way I do it. I usually see growth in 1-3 days typically. Though I had a B+ germ plate take 12 days to show growth so it may be as long as two weeks.

Best of luck! Hopefully you will have growth this time. I just can't stop pouring more plates and making transfers, lol.

Oh btw I made Pan Cyan germ plates today! I got a swab and did my usual gently stab the center of three plates then snap the head off the swab and stab it into the fourth dish leaving it there. These were marked BVI.

I also made a batch of softer, lower nutrient agar for these. My ratio was 6g agar + 3g LME + 500ml water. I'm hoping the softer recipe will encourage my spores to germinate better and the lower nutrient content will give me faster growth. We will see how it goes!

Finally on the Panaeolus bandwagon!

Thanks cob.. I've not been able to get anything to go on agar. Soooo hopefully this works. I've done cubes several times. I'm new to the agar thing though. We shall see!
