Has anyone ever heard of or grown pan Africanus? I have healthy myc but not sure how to fruit it. my plan as of now is to treat them like regular pans

I guess if it's a pan then treating it like the others would be your best option.

Only time I heard of it was here in the psilocybin mushroom descriptions

https://www.shroomery.org/12481/Panaeolus-africanus

No photos unfortunately and not much info, it says its weakly active,
not that this really maters though. I would love to see you succeed
with them and to see some photos along the way.

Thanks for the info! I had not found anything on them before.

Well it matters in the sense that I need to know how much to consume if I try them :crazy2: but for sure I will document the grow here as soon as I put them in the FC

Out of curiosity, has anyone used chicken manure and have any success? I assume it wont work as just bulk substrate and may have some use as an additive to regular cow manure.

They are considered as inactive (and no bluing reaction) so I just observed them, not bioessayed...

They are looking wild V.L. Can see the typical bits of veil on the cap margin.

The compost I use says "with added chicken manure" I don't know if it is added before or after composting, it doesn't smell bad so might be
beforehand. I also don't know how much of it is in there but it's working great when mixing that compost with coir 50/50.

There are some substrate recipes with chicken manure around on the forum. IIRC then you don't need much of it. Horse or cow manure alone
mixed with straw or coir works very well though and bird poop can be really yuck.

Chicken manure is what is referred to in gardening circles as "hot manure" because its very high in nutrients with almost no undigested material.
Sheep and goat manure can also be considered "hot" for this reason. These manures are quite active/reactive, giving a flood of nutrients in a short time and can burn plants if applied excessively when fresh. They are usually composted with other materials to help break down and hold nutrients in order to mellow them for use.

Fresh cow manure is next in line as far as the balance between activity, nutrient concentration and undigested material is concerned.

Horse manure is last on this scale with more undigested material and less raw nutrients and is usually slower to break down and release nutrients.

It all has to do with the digestive processes of the animal it comes from. It's worth noting too that diet plays a big role; pasture fed animals will have more undigested material than feedlot, grain fed or stable fed horses and cows.

Heh I've been printing a bunch of non-active pans. Was pipedreaming of trying to cross it with an active. Ants grow fucking huge and even in my manure pile at 6k feet.

Looking Great BabaYaga and Hindsight!

Anyone waiting on a Bunnell print you should be seeing it soon. Friday or Saturday at the latest.

My first Bunnell is looking just gorgeous. I’m looking forward to spawning to bulk and fruiting them. Adas tells me I should look forward to eating them even more!

:awedance:

Great brotha! Looking forward to this! The plate things are not knots probably, in my experience it's more like tiny sclerotia, it is normal for this Pan variety.

EDIT: Hindsight and Baba, wonderful grows and experiments! Keep it up!

It's possible that some pastures are sprayed with fungicides, unfortunately. I'm not saying that's definitely the reason, but it's possible.

Can you "leech" dried pellets?

Of course, but not sure to what extent that would be effective. I leech all my shit pellets after hydration (put it into an old T-shirt, squeeze, wash, squeeze as hard as you can).

I suspected fungicide too. Only bought pelleted manure cause it weighed less. Luckily I have more jars ready to go .

Probably should have but at that moment seemed like too much work. Easier to grab a new one and try again. Will keep leeching in mind.

Back with my pan cambos "Thai Suphan Buri", harvested the two C3T3 clone tubs 15 days after spawn / 8 days after casing, manure/compost/coir 25/25/50

261g and 355g wet had a couple of 4g fruits in there.

Yes they are the same, got the genetics from FSE.

Update on the two jars with poor recovery

13 days after the last shake and they still wouldn't grow back a nice fluff, second photo is of another jar that recovered like this just to
show the phenomenon in more detail.

Spawned them 4 days ago and fruited at spawn. Bulk is compost/coir with just a little bit of manure that was left over.

This shows that the spawn kicks back into high gear once hitting the bulk. I spawned a few jars like that now and they always bounce back
and usually just fruit like the "good" stuff. Will update regardless of the outcome.

2 layers of micropore tape on the lower holes and two on the top holes which I reduced in size by applying a strip of masking tape.

A couple of photos to show what kind of FAE these tubs are getting.

I haven't used the slightly bigger tubs with 4 bottom holes and vented lid for a while, there are no holes at the top or more precisely holes are taped up.
