24 hrs after casing and fruiting one of the coir tubs is throwing first pins up.
C5T4, coir @ 100, spawn ratio 1:2, colonized & consolidated for 7 days, after 1 day of fruiting.

Nothing too exciting regarding the other two manure/compost based tubs, very nice pin coverage, basically every square inch is covered with fruits but there is uneven growth with newly emerging pins being 3 days behind. Might be due to the early casing and I had to re-case some overlaying patches. Will give them 2 more days max. A couple of new jars are finishing up and will be ready in 3-4 days so gonna have to throw these two tubs on the compost pile.
C5T4, h-manure/compost/coir @ 25/25/50, spawn ratio 1:2.5, fully colonized in 5 days, fruited straight after full colonization, after 7 days of fruiting.

C1T5, h-manure/compost/coir @ 25/25/50, spawn ratio 1:2.5, fully colonized in 5 days, fruited straight after full colonization, after 7 days of fruiting.

I'm happy though more to come very soon.

You got it AKA Sometimes when I’m mixing up a batch of agar for spore germination (especially pans) I will throw a 1/2 -1 teaspoon horse poo per 500 ml into the mix. If I’m germinating a woodlover I throw a few hardwood pellets into the mix. I have never evaluated if it has an effect compared to a standard agar formulation

@Baba what do you find to be the difference in outcome when using manure/core vs manure/compost/coir? Is the compost really a critical component when using coir?

I haven't noticed any substantial difference between using various mixes of h-manure, compost and straw. So far I ran:
- h-manure/coir 50/50
- h-manure/straw/coir 25/25/50
- h-manure/compost/coir 25/25/50
- compost/coir 50/50
and I also ran h-manure/straw 50/50 a few times but I don't like prepping big amounts of straw so this phase didn't last long.
I'm actually not that accurate when mixing it up as I do it by the hand full. So all of these combined in any ratio are working the same for me when mixed with coir @ 50/50. I pay attention to keep the mix fluffy and not soggy, most of the water it needs gets pumped in when fruiting the subs. I go really hard lately and drench the subs repeatedly.
Compost/coir did quite well but I only ran it once so far and it wasn't as much of an improvement that one could say it's superior to the others.I like compost though as it does mix well and is easy to prep. Especially when mixing it up with h-manure it helps to break up the little fibrous manure chunks and makes for a more homogeneous mix as the stuff I use is quite gritty. Once I use up the rest of the h-manure I will give compost/coir some more attention.
Buying generic compost that says it contains manure and sieve it through 2-3mm sieve as roughly half of the bag is composted bark which is quite chunky. Costs like $2.50 for a 10 gallon bag. The bark chunks are probably good food for woodlovers.
First one is h-manure/coir 50/50 and second one is compost/coir 50/50

Babayaga About 6 years ago ? When I was even more of a noob than I am now… I got a pan print. (Pan cambo I think). I had no idea that they had different culture requirements. I germinated some spores, made sure the culture was clean. Threw it on grains, then put coir into a 1.5 gallon container, added the spawn. Cased it with some vermiculite and put it in the Martha with everybody else with a little humidifier running in there. I didn’t know any better but I had a couple little flushes in what was more or less a mini mono:

I printed some of those, have a print or two away (Mary Fairchild was one of them..) never ate one, then didn’t grow any more for years until Mr Fox sent me some spores. The another year or two and I started poking around here and lifted my game with support from the crew in here.

Nice, thanks Baba. I pasteurized a bag of 50/50 coir/manure last night and will be putting grain spawn to it sometime this week assuming my jars turn out ok. It will then go into my tent. Will post the results up here.
Still waiting for my white pan clones to start pinning. They've been in there 7 days now which is too long.

Nice Hindsight! If it turns out to work well for you then try prepping the coir ala bucket-tek and pasteurize just the manure. That way you will get more substrate per pasteurization. Looking forward hearing how it turns out for you, hope it will be good (same for your clone tray).
@ PsiloPsychin Ha yeah, it's so nice sometimes not having a clue and still pulling something off. My first pan grow was grain spawned to a square tupperware container and I put a plastic baggy with a few holes over it. Cased with verm as well. Nothing happened for a week and I transferred the substrate onto the lid of a bigger tupperware container and placed the bottom part over it using lego bricks as spacers, gave it a few pumps of water a few times a day and received a few measly fruits as a thanks you. But that gave me the idea to have lots of FAE around the bottom and not so much at the top and it kinda worked. Can't find any photos of this but I also did a few bottles parallel to the other attempt and had them in a monotub, this is the only photo I could find, only one bottle produced something.

I kind of miss the times where all of this was new but now on the other hand I'm glad that I don't worry at all anymore.

My last pan trays have all been meh and my clone of the white pans hasn't fruited despite being cased and placed in the fruiting tent 8 days ago.
I'm going to try throwing the kitchen sink at it. Changing up my spawn jar lids (was using thin stick-on SFDs from Amazon and will now try some lids with thick SFDs from a myco supply vendor, and also some lids with polyfill covered with a layer of micropore tape), letting my spawn jars consolidate in a clear plastic tote with a lid on it (to help cut down on contaminates landing on the jars), and will also try sterilizing some of my substrates instead of pasteurizing them. I know there is a lot of debate on the latter but I also know JOC recently had issues and switched to sterilization which worked for him - given the issues I've been having I feel it's worth a try.

Sorry to hear that it's not working that well, how many transfers are you doing before going to grain? I assume that more than just one culture are not doing that well? I had a growing season where it just didn't want to work out and I packed up early, all was good again the next year. No clue why.
Yeah IDK man, it's a constant up and down, over here all of the clone tubs following the first two I just did are throwing side pins like crazy again although some are the same clone cultures, conditions mostly the same as well
This morning I caught this jar turning green. C6T2 clone.

First two clone monos are done and will be harvested today after 8 days in fruiting conditions. Taking prints now.
C5T4, very happy with this one. 365g wet

C1T5 has a big bald patch but is pretty plump otherwise. 391g wet

EDIT: adding wet weight

Sometimes I go with T1, but I can say for sure that my agar is not the issue. That's literally the only thing I have really feel that I have down pat. Grain jars.... most of my jars look really good but I often have issues with them stalling toward the end. It could be due to not enough gas exchange, could be due to the grains drying out too much, or it could be contams. If it's contams, I'm not sure what kind - I've only had one or two jars ever go green on me. So I assume if it's contamination, the uncolonized grains are due to bacteria, though I had a handful of coir tubs recently trich out on me so who knows. All I can do is keep changing things until I find something that works well I guess.
Regarding your side pins, have you tried using liners or duct tape to block lighting from the side? I never get side pins on any kinds of grows unless there is light coming in from the side of the tub.

Sometimes what happens with jars here is that they are doing great, I give them 2 or 3 shakes and sometimes after the last shake they seem not to recover properly anymore and still look like this after 3 or 4 days.

but I spawn them anyway cause I read cronicr saying something about this and they are doing fine and going back to look happy once they hit the bulk sub.
I do at least 3-4 transfers when I try for a good grow. Less if it's just to get some clone material. The number of transfers is in my labeling C1T5 = clone 1 transfer 5. Funny that the C6T2 went green but I guess it's coincidental and the mold probably got in when I was pouring LC to grain, at least I hope so, will find out soon I guess.
I suppose I could try clear liners as I like to see the sides of the sub, but side pins are going nuts so randomly and I haven't figured out yet what it is. Probably a fine line of how to dial in FAE at the beginning. I will keep doing what I'm doing with only slight adjustments for the rest of this growing season and see if I can find any pointers. Liners will be on the cards for next year

Yeah I have noticed if I shake nearly ANY of my pan jars at around 75% or 90%, they never look pretty after that. They do look better than the one in your pic, but only some areas have a nice thin even coverage of mycelium, while others look bare, and still others have some spots of more dense white. I have not been able to determine if that is something different about pans vs cubes, or if I'm dealing with contamination of some sort. Interesting that you spawn them and they do just fine though.

You are right, it happens after a shake when they are just about to finish and they often turn quite wet as well but I think that is because pans are putting out so much more heat than cubes and there is more condensation, ever noticed that pan jars feel warm. They do alright, I'm also marking the tubs I spawn these jars to and they don't turn green more often than others. Knock on wood, I'm on a pretty good streak atm.
I would give it a go next time you come across this.
When I started with pans I threw out a lot of stuff that was probably fine, jars that looked like this and consolidating tubs where I freaked out cause the beads of metabolites looked like mycogone, kept stuff way to dry and so on.

Thanks for the input - yeah I think I will go ahead and spawn them. Substrate is cheap, might as well. I will continue playing with the substrate prep methods to see what works best.
Oh and looks like I spoke to soon about my white pan clone tray - saw a little cluster of tiny pins on it night. Maybe it was just taking its time. The MS grows of it took WAY less time. So strange when a clone underperforms its MS grow. That tells me it is variability of contamination in either the spawn or the substrate.... if everything else is the same, which for my setup it is.

And once again proving that cambos are 95% water.
The combined weight from above of 756g wet simmered down to 37g dry.
Not complaining though as this would be roughly the same as three times of regular cubes which would be around 4 oz. Not bad for 2 quart of spawn first flush.

I always pasteurize I’ve ran sterile also but I haven’t in about a year pasteurization gives me a much higher success rate than sterilization and The trays resist contam longer giving me more flushes also

Thanks JOC - I thought I read you switched to Sterilization due to some sort of issue you were having one particular summer but I can’t recall the details. If you were having an issue that sterilization temporarily fixed, did you switch back to pasteurization because you figured out the true cause of the issue and if so, what was it?
Hope the lab move is going well. We miss those awesome tray pics.

I did try and switch to sterile at one point when I had trouble finding good manure at one point I think and I ran side by sides a few times but overall the pasteurization preformed better consistently ime, yeah I’m almost done I’m video logging my tent builds so I should have better build instructions soon I’ve also made some upgrades l/adjustments

Interesting to know the variability in manure quality impacting grows. What specifically was the issue with the manure or do you know? I've been trying to get either field aged and dried manure, or fresh manure from the field that I then put on a tarp and leave outside to age/dry for however long it takes for it to smell like dirt instead of manure.
Looking forward to seeing those vids and adjustments. Thanks again!
