I hate chopping straw for substrate. It takes forever and makes the biggest mess and I can't never get the straw exactly as I want it.

So I bought this "Sun Joe" electric leaf mulcher. You can google that to see a pic of it. It's works like the ol' weed whacker in the 55 gallon drum trick, but is cheaper and easier and faster and I bet more consistent. It has a motor and a replaceable plastic string blade (like a weed whacker) inside. You dump your straw in the top, and it falls into a bag you clip to the bottom of it. Very little mess. It doesn't work that great out of the box because the straw tends to just circle around repeatedly above the spinning line and gets trapped by the under-side of the top feeding funnel. So I fixed that by making a cardboard deflector as you can see in the second pic and duct taping it to the underside of the funnel so that when the straw hits that ramp, it is deflected down toward the string to get chopped and fall down into the bag. My deflector solution is obviously temporary and I'll epoxy a metal ramp in there later - I just wanted to prove out the concept.

The straw gets shredded not just the short way, but the long way too. Very fine and fluffy. You could probably process an entire bale of straw in about 1-2 minutes I believe. It only took me 30 seconds to process enough to fill a 2'x2'x2' box worth.

I have a bag of those and they were my first attempt but it didn't work for me. I can't blame the pellets though because of the fact that it was my first attempt, but what I noticed is that the substrate was extremely mushy and dense. Not light and fluffy like when using shredded straw. I have been planning to try again, but this time cutting in some course verm or even some coir to act as a fluffing agent. I can see in your pics it looks like you have a good amount of verm in there. I was going to go as high as 30%-40% verm to start with. Looks like you are running around 25% ish?

Please keep us posted - if straw pellets work, it would be so much easier and more convenient than dealing with straw. Just hydrate them like you do HWFP and go.

Oh, the couple trays I made with the straw pellets that didn't really work (very little mycelium growth and they eventually contaminated) were put outside on the ground and they have been producing some fruits out there for a few weeks now. So it will work for sure.

Basicly I use manure\verm mix. Here is also manure\straw pellets trays. Myc on manure\straw looks more fluffy and subjectively more pleasant, but know I'm happy how they all go.

I will post the photos of open trays in a few days when will case them all together

Lol yeah I think pellets are the superior form for everything in mush cult. So nice to just measure a scoop and add water.

Technically my first pans, just need another ~200 agar plates and I'll have a full trip

It's been kinda fast on agar but slow on grain, these have fruited and I haven't even got a sub down yet.

Need to replenish my pan stash. Wild Coast on manure agar. Tupperwares suck for photos.

Forgot how fast these guys move on agar. Little more tomentose then I recall. May go back to germs and find thinner growth.

Edit: Damn one plate looks like mold from pic

When chopping straw, what's the ideal size? 1-3in?

I have rice straw, its a little finer side.

Thanks ☺️

1/4" would be perfect. The shorter the better. I've tried everything from grabbing fist-fulls and using scissors to snip the 1/4" at the end. I've put a huge cutting board down then put my SAB over it (so straw doesn't fly everywhere) then gone in with a fucking meat cleaver and chop-chop-chop as fast as I can. It sounds funny but it works better than scissors. I can find shredded straw online to buy, and have bought some, but while it is shredded it is still way too long. So far the leaf mulcher I posted about the other day has been the best and easiest method. Hoping those straw pellets work though.

The condensation in my JCM chamber seems to be a bit much for my Pancake bottles. I just checked them and they are absolutely soaked. Any tips on how to reduce it? I can't really warm the room that it's in without incuring a high electric bill. The lid is an unmodded mono lid so maybe drilling holes would help? Either that or I was thinking putting a curved piece of plastic in there that would make the condensation roll down back into the bottom of the chamber.

Ok, thanks!

That's a little smaller than I hoped. I don't have any outdoor space, so a mulcher is not gonna happen. I do have an old paper shredder...I wonder if that's worth a shot?

I had already purchased a couple of small straw bales before I learned straw pellets were a thing. I'm hoping you get success there, I'll jump on that wagon in a second
