I'm thinking about cultivation with MacMerdin Pancake's (without BRF). I want to pasteurize cakes. What should I do with straws? Do you recommended pre-pasteurization?
I have done several runs this year where I cold pasteurized the straw with lime. Then made up the sub with the straw and did a "lazy pasteurization" (an idea I got from cron) where I just bring the sub up to pressure in the PC and then turn it off. As bad of a practice as it sounds, it's worked well for me. All my bags grow out at double speed, but the issue is fruiting time seems to double (10 days vs. 5) and flushes come in staggered. Still pulling in the weight overall which is usually 28g dry per tray. And had some personal record setting 11g fruits in these grows.
If I have understood savan's question, they are looking to inoculate the pasturized cakes.

Right?
As far as I know your spawn, whatever you are inoculating with your agar/LC/spores should be sterilized.
Your sub which you mix you clean, fully colonised spawn into can be pasturized.

Would this serve as casing material? https://gluckspilze.com/Casing-soil
Translated it says: "pH: 7 - 7.5 80 % black peat 20 % white peat Moisture uptake to about 60%
This casing soil is ready-to-use, if required just add some water. Made of quality peat mixed with lime. The casing soil is pasteurized, and therefore NON-STERILE."
Thanks for your input! :-)

Not sure what white peat is, and I'm not super up on the pH stuff, there are some teks that talk about the pH of casing.
But I don't see why you couldn't mix that casing with verm and case pans with it.
Have you thought about getting some peat moss and making your own casing?

Quick question for those of you who use a JCM FC. Do you put peroxide or anything in the water to prevent things from growing? I'm guessing no, but thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Is there a practical way to pause fruiting?
I'm about to go on a trip for two weeks, and I bet my myc can make at least one more decent flush. Thinking of harvesting whatever there is before leaving, covering with foil + holes, putting in a dark place, and dropping temps a bit.

I was wondering about these plates. They are supposed to be panaeolus tropicalis. The last plate before transfer looked more like what I have read tropicalis mycellium looks like, but these transfer plates are showing rhizo growth it seems. Anyone have any experience with tropicalis mycellium displaying this sort of growth pattern? The earlier plates were made with JOC style nutrient agar with 1/2 nutrients than his posted recipe minus the potato starch (peptone, dextrose, malt extract, and agar) to germinate spores, and then transfered once to more plates using same recipe and these plates are the third generation (2nd transfer from spore germination plates) using malt extract agar mix at 25 g / 500 mL. Just curious because I haven't heard of pans displaying rhizo growth, and this is my first time working with the species.

I'm running a tent with an ultrasonic fogger so it's different from the JCM FC but cleaning concept is about the same. Add standard store-bought 3% hydrogen peroxide at a ratio of 1/20th the volume of your JCM water, once per week. In subsequent weeks, add less than 1/20th until you get to where you are seeing algae and other growth again then increase the ratio back up to where you are getting good results. In other words, you are looking for the least amount of peroxide that will work effectively.

So at some point after building mine, I read through the whole easy fruiting thread and questions about algae came up a lot.
I didn't see anyone adding H2O2, but as per jcm's suggestion, I use distilled water and it last for at least a couple of runs before getting murky.
I didn't realize people were adding H2O2 with their foggers though. Maybe it's a good idea.

hey whats up to all my fellow panheads. i was all set to have my shit back up and running after my nice long summer break off and i was set to take transfers from slants yesterday to get goin however all of that is now on hold again as my beloved brother who all of you that know me know how close i am with sadly made a conscious decision to depart this earth over the weekend and he was found on sunday morning by my father. im a fractured man at the moment and have alot of stuff to take care of as he lived in another state and il be back n forth dealing with the estate and whatnot. i consider many of you all here my friends and i have missed engaging in cultivation of that which we all love but sadly my summer break is being extended and at this moment i dont even kno for how long. i just wanted to share what i am going thru with my friends here so nobody thinks somethin bad happened to me or i just quit and disappeared or somethin. this is all truely tragic and if u know anyone who u may think is depressed or anything of the sorts dont hesitate to reach out as it just may save someone else. nobody deserves this pain me and my family are going thru

No the bubbles do a lot to keep the water from getting too gross. I clean mine out after each grow and give the chamber a clean with iso. But nothing special.

Question for those of you who age your substrate after pasteurization: What is the longest you would age it? I have ready many like to age 5-10 days but am wondering if contams would be an issue if aging longer than that? Related question: Do you always age in an anerobic environment like a ziploc bag or would a mycobag with a filter patch be better? I know JOC does his in a ziploc and Asura does his in a mycobag but am curious if both work as well for longer aging.
I ask only because I have a tough time predicting when my jars will be ready and if I’m guessing at the 10 day mark but my jars take another week or two, I want to know that it’s ok to leave the sub in the bag that long.
JCM, very sorry for your loss brother. Sending you and your family strength in this difficult time.
