My Pan grows in the last few months have been an incredible learning experience. This was the first time growing this species, it was quite fun and interesting to watch these grow. All my previous experience from cubes went towards these guys. It was also the first time using straw and manure. All measurements were based on a recipe and in general feel and touch and eyeballing.  In this last few months I grew out Pan Tasmania, Hawaii and Bali. All with different grow characteristics. This is one of my last trays still pushing out fruit. After this im taking a break and reseting for a possible cold climate mush grow.

Pan Cyan Hawaii

First flush  Sept 26th

Second flush  Sept 30th

Third flush Oct 3rd - still waiting another 1-3 days.

Random pics - The dome trays were at the 4th flush. Things were getting pretty stinky so thats was the of those trays. Definitely surprised that Pan Taz pushed 4 flushes in there. I barely gave them any attention.

Nice grows Phoscap!

I had a 0.9g tea of some necd last night!

Over all not bad but I didn't set myself up for a special time haha. The night before I had had a pretty explosive bought of food poisoning so was on the fence about dosing. But I had the house to myself which is a rare event.

Long story short I should have gone for a full gram or a little bit more, I'm going to stick to not eating for a good while before dosing, and will probably avoid tripping after being violently ill  :facepalm3: I was tired and went into the trip with too many expectations. Some glimpses of magic and some nice insights, but all a bit rough around the edges due to being low on energy and a bit wobbly still in the digestive department.

Bro, next time have some minerals at hand to restore balance in your body after such events. Lack of minerals could have been the only reason for your tiredness. Especially Sodium, Potassium and Magnesium.

I have recently bought bulk Magnesium Sulfate so that I can easily supplement whenever I need it. Works miracles.

Yeah good point! I knew it was a coin flip going into the trip and was as prepared as I could have been for the whole experience going a bit south.

In the end nothing dramatically bad happened, it just wasn't the optimal moment for a trip!

Funny someone else was recently suggesting I pick up some magnesium

Wow PhosCap, those grows are quite an accomplishment for being new to pans! My experience has been that these are harder than most people say when compared to growing cubes. Excellent work! Is there a mycology phrase equivalent to “green thumb”? If so, you definitely have it.

coversall, ive been there done that too. An upset stomach before eating mush and sure throw off the experience. I like to have ginger on hand before ingesting, just in case i need it. or even better take it before you eat mush. You can get it in whole, powder, or from a tea bag. Will ease the stomach and nausea.

Hindsight, This was my first time in 10 years that i took a break from growing outdoor ganga plants. The grow bug in me was getting antsy.

If it wasn't for everyone here i def wouldn't have made a good success with my grows.  One thing with Pans is they are picky for certain conditions. Assuming you have clean, fully colonized spawn the biggest importance is proper prep and pasteurization of the straw/manure/verm/gypsum. I used with Jake's recipe using 60-65% straw, 35-40% manure(composted and time spent taking rocks and sticks out), 5% verm and a scoop of gypsum. The only thing i did different is soaking the straw in a bucket for minimum of 30min in hot water - After draining i immediately added the straw to the prepped manure-verm-gypsum mixture. The soaked straw will contribute to the water field capacity of the substrate. I pasteurized using 2qt jars @ 160-170 and adjusting when needed.. Its more tedious but ive had good consistent results with it. All my sub always sat for at least 2-4 days before using.
One thing no one really talks about is layering the spawn with the sub. I never mixed it all together. I first layed down a layer of sub so you cant see the bottom of the tray. Then sprinkled the spawn. Then another layer of sub. I think i usually went with 3 layers of spawn and 3 layers of sub. - The last layer is the sub. Also ensuring the level is all even and lightly tampered down.
I kind of neglected the trays alot and was always worried that I should have cased sooner, but that didn't seem to be any issue. Once cased trays were immediately thrown in the FC. After 2 days i began misting and the occasional manual fanning. Although the JCM FC has lots of airflow going up I liking pounding the casing layer with bursts of air. Anyway I hope to do a write up about my grows. We shall see.

edit: It was hard for me to wrap my head around a 1:4 spawn:sub ratio. Adding too much spawn can actually lower your success. This is one thing to keep in mind as well.

Hey pany people,

My now 2 week old Ms (wild pan) plates seem to have knotted and blobbed? Agar is 10g lme / 500ml.

It's happening on 3 of 5 germ plates.

I haven't seen this on cubes before. Is it yeast/bacteria colonies? Myco blobs?

Is this common pan behavior? Should I be concerned?

Thanks!

I am going to attempt a grow with trays in a SGFC above perlite (I know it's not ideal, but currently nothing more high tek is working out for me).

Anyways, I wanted to do three trays in a 130litre/quart SGFC - is this size too large for a Pan SGFC (as I envision it)?

Thanks for your input!

If three trays fit and there is still about half of the surface area exposed it should be ok (I don't know the dimensions of your 130qt tub, and it's the surface area not the volume that matters). I'm guessing there wouldn't be though.

I have a friend who grew pans in an SGFC. It didn't produce the kind of flushes the experts in this thread show pics of but he got a few doses out of a tray.

It will work but like Hindsight said.. it won't reach its full potential.
I would run a little hepa in the same room as your SGFC. Get that airflow happening.

Thanks guys. Didn't realize pan stones was a thing.

Is this behavior desirable like IV pins? Worth cloning?

🙏

Version 2 of my silent swamp. It's quiet and super nondescript (cooler on a shelf), and more importantly bearing legit fruit  (by my standards. New to pans!). No humidifier here, instead it's a aquarium heater + fan.

Not sure when I'll build a next try, but a few things want to be different. Thicker cooler walls would reduce condensation, which is proving to be an annoyance as ambient temperature cools down. Bigger water reservoir so it's more hands-off would be nice.

Hi, I got a quick question on my Pan grain jars. I tried the search function but got different answers.

Is it advisable to shake pan jars? I figured that the mycelium is more fragile/doesn't recover as quickly as cube mycelium. These jars take their sweet time...

Thank you in advance for any guidance.

This is amazing. I'm thinking of building a heater + fan setup myself. Or even a passive setup, similar to SGFC, where the air will be drawn into the tub by the means of warm humid air inside the tub rising up and going out of some top holes. I'll probably test that at some point just for kicks. Even if it won't be much good for Pans, can still use it for Reishi/other perfectly fine.
