Super happy with the results for 1 qt of spawn!
Curious to see how it continues to do.
Any ways, I will try and post a final weight, just because I always like to see that in logs, etc.
Next project is pan cyan hawaii and pan bisporus!!
Oh and I have two more quarts of pan cambo
I swear I feel a buzz just from picking and eating a few tiny ones and pieces of stipe!!! Probabaly placebo and Shpongle but whatever!

well thank you, you're a bonafide badass Mac!! I am a fan of your work, and my next batch of bisporus is including grass seed, it's already well on its way to being colonized..i truly think you are onto something with the grass seed seeing as how this species is a grass/dung lover...and truly, thanks for the props everyone.. long live the shroomery!!

Funky...are you using the grass seed to apply as spawn or are you using it in the substrate?

OMG. I can't believe I've been a part of the shroomery.org web page for several months now, and I have never seen this thread. I just spent several hours reading all 111 pages......
I have successfully cultivated several different strains of cubes, but I've been unsuccessful at pans. I have a few pan cams going right now, but I don't know how it's going to work out.
I'm getting a really funky smell from my cakes. I tried a 1:1:1:1 verm, manure, flour, water mixture, but it doesn't smell good at all. How did I get contaminated? I used a spore syringe on two of them, and although I can't see contamination, I can smell it. Another cake came from an agar plate, but it smells a little off also.
Your threads have kept my hopes alive that I can do it!!!
One thing I've picked up on is that most of you seem to go from spore syringe to agar first to "clean up". I went from spore syringe to agar, and then to a BRF/manure cake. Maybe I should have had one or two more transfers?
Spore syringe directly to BRF/manure cake seems to be a recipe for failure.
I am a noob, and my technique generally sucks.....

did you sterilize? I'm pretty sure you're supposed to pasteurize poo.

No, if it's in a PF recipe then it should be sterilized. Once the manure/flour/verm cake reaches 100% it's fairly contamination resistant.
I think he probably needed to take a couple more transfers on agar. Sounds like he had some pesky hitching bacterial contamination on his culture...can't say without pics though.
Bernard, Idk what exactly your smelling but pan mycelium doesn't smell like cube mycelium. Cubes smell kinda funky && pans smell sweet in a sense. Hope tht helps

You are correct Mr. Fox, it's a PF style cake. I did sterilize in a PC for 1 1/2 hours. One of the cakes is direct injection from a MS syringe. It smells bad and only seems to be getting worse. I quarantined it, but I don't have much hope. The other cake was MS syringe to agar and then wedge to a cake. It doesn't smell sweet or like almonds or like some of the other descriptions I've read on this thread.
I've only worked with agar a few times, so I didn't understand that I needed to make more than one transfer. It looked clean to me at the time, but that's an untrained eye.
Maybe it's the manure component that's making the different smell?
Why can't my iPhone record smell? Somebody needs to make an app for that.

My experience is that pan myc is sweet smelling. But the manure does have a smell too. Maybe it's just that?
Got any pics?

When you successfully cultivated cubes, did you use manure?
If so, and it was properly aged or leached for your pans, I'd suggest this is unlikely the problem.

Or the fact that he used a syringe. Pan syringes in my experience are unreliable AF even on agar..theyre infamous for being excessively bacterial. Your best bet would be to get your hands on some panaeolus prints, then swab the spores onto agar.. Or get some antibiotic agar and take it from there.
I mean can you supply us with pictures, or is tht too much to ask...

Good morning everybody!
So I've been working with the cinctulus variety. And it appears that I have two completely different types of mycellium. The first pic is the wispier tomentose mycellium. The second pic is some gnarly looking rhizomorphic mycellium. The third pic has the rhizo stuff on top of the wedge and the tomentose mycellium growing outward. Another interesting point is that the rhizo stuff seems to sweat and the tomentose doesnt....What do you guys think?

I had a feeling it may be some sort of contam. but I wasnt sure cause it was so bright white and growing pretty quickly...but then again it could just be trying to escape the mold?
What is it that makes you say that though? Im not doubting you just trying to learn brotha!
